The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Yes. The first step is to disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal before beginning any installation work.
You must remove: rear combination lights (using a trim panel puller), rear cargo door threshold, cargo tray, driver's side cargo side panel (partially), trim panel above headliner, two headliner fasteners, and partially remove the front passenger-side wheel well covering. These removals provide access to the rear combination light pocket, cargo area above the headliner, and the vehicle body harness connection point.
The approximate installation time is 120 minutes.
The T-One T-Connector end with yellow/brown wires connects to the driver's side rear combination light. The T-One T-Connector end with green/blue wires connects to the passenger's side rear combination light. Both connectors must be fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs during insertion.
Route the ModuLite and T-One T-Connector end with yellow/brown wires and chassis ground from underneath the vehicle on the driver's side up to the exposed rear combination light pocket. Mount the ModuLite box using the supplied double-sided tape and/or cable ties. Secure loose wires near the ModuLite.
Route the chassis ground ring terminal to the existing vehicle chassis ground point and mount it. Ensure the ring terminal is in full contact with the vehicle's chassis. This is critical for proper grounding of the system.
Route the 18-gauge blue wire from underneath the vehicle on the driver's side through the grommet into the rear cargo area. Route it behind side cargo trim panels and up above the headliner. Locate the white wire with yellow stripe in the rear cargo door electrical harness and connect using the supplied wire tap or the best suited alternative.
Beginning underneath the vehicle on the driver's side, route the body harness with red/black/blue wires forward. Route it over the rear wheel architecture and to the passenger's side. Following existing wires, route the red/black wires to the positive post underneath the hood. Route the 12-gauge blue wire to the vehicle body harness connection point and connect to the vehicle's green wire using the supplied butt connector.
Route the body harness black wire to the vehicle's positive post underneath the hood. Using the 30-amp fuse holder (7-way), butt connector, and ring terminal, connect to the battery. This connection powers the 7-way connector.
Route the body harness red wire to the vehicle's positive post underneath the hood. Using the 15-amp fuse holder (tow harness), butt connector, and ring terminal, connect to the battery. This connection powers the tow harness power module.
Carefully remove the vehicle trim panel underneath the dash without pulling on courtesy lamp wires. Locate the vehicle's electric brake control harness connector underneath the dash, left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Plug the brake control adapter into the vehicle electric controller connector. Use butt connectors to attach the adapter wires to the corresponding wires on the electric brake control, following the brake control manufacturer's installation instructions. Complete installation per the brake control manufacturer's instructions.
Determine the 7-way mounting location. Route the 7-way harness containing the 7 wires behind the rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket toward the mounting location. Using the wire insertion detail, pin the 7-way connector. Connect the 7-way connector and 7-way socket. Mount the 7-way socket (bracket not included).
The 7-way harness contains: black (12V battery), brown (right/stop), red (left/stop), white (ground), blue (trailer brakes), yellow (backup), and green (tail lights). Each wire connects to specific functions on the trailer connector.
The maximum amperage for the 7-way 12-volt connector is 30 amps. Do not exceed this limit to prevent circuit overload and fire hazard.
The maximum is 2 stop/turn/backup lights per side at 4.2 amps total per side. Do not exceed this limit.
The maximum amperage for tail lights is 7.5 amps. Do not exceed this limit.

Apply heat directly to butt connectors using a heat gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool before inspecting the splice and checking integrity.
Secure the harness with the supplied cable ties to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. The kit includes 24 cable ties (8.5") and 1 cable tie (14.5").

The installation may have activated circuit protection. Start the vehicle and turn off all functions: tail lights (headlights), brake, and turns. Remove the tow harness power module 15-amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. If still no power, ensure the 15-amp fuse is fully inserted into the fuse holder with no breaks. Verify the fuse holder is connected properly to the positive battery post. Remove the 15-amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat. Ensure the module is connected to B+. Using a tester or volt meter, check for voltage on either side of the yellow butt connector near the module. Remove the 15-amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
