Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Locate the positive post underneath the hood on the driver's side. Open the rear tailgate. On the driver's side, remove access panels and trays, setting aside all items carefully. Partially remove the driver's side cargo side panel and remove the trim panel to expose access above the headliner near the rubber cover protecting the tailgate harness.
The 10-pin connector is located behind the rear interior trim panel. Insert the 10-pin Tow-Plug adapter and lock it into place. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure the connector is fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
From inside the vehicle on the driver's side, route the body harness with red/black/blue wires to the engine compartment. Follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Route the wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Route the body harness black wire to the vehicle's positive post underneath the hood. Using a 30 amp fuse holder (7-Way), butt connector, and ring terminal, connect to the battery.
Route the 18 gauge blue wire behind the side cargo trim panels and up above the headliner. Locate the group of wires going through the grommet into the cargo door. Locate the red wire in the rear cargo door electrical harness and connect using the supplied wire tap or the best suited alternative.
The Modulite is the power module that controls the harness functions. Secure loose wires near the Modulite and mount the Modulite box with the supplied double-sided tape and/or cable tie. It should be mounted near the connection point where the grommet plug is located on the floor of the vehicle.
Locate the grommet plug on the floor of the vehicle near the connection point. Remove the grommet plug and route the wires with the taped end out and underneath the vehicle. Seat the grommet taped to the harness. Some grommets will need to be altered to allow wires to pass through. Seal altered grommets with silicone.
Determine a suitable mounting point on the tow vehicle for the brake control harness. Route the white/blue/black wires through an existing grommet on the firewall and into the engine compartment by creating a small hole in the grommet. Route the white wire to the existing vehicle chassis ground point and mount using the provided ring terminal. Route the black wire to the vehicle's positive post underneath the hood using a 30 amp fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal. Connect the blue wire (electric brake output) to the body harness blue wire using a butt connector. Connect the red wire (cold side input) to the body harness red wire using a butt connector. Cover the blue/black/red wires (and partially the white) with supplied convoluted tubing from the grommet to the fuse holder. Secure the brake harness connector near the desired brake control mounting location.
Determine the 7-Way mounting location. Route the 7-Way harness containing the 7 wires behind the rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket towards the mounting location. Using the wire insertion detail, pin the 7-Way connector. Connect the 7-Way connector and 7-Way socket. Mount the 7-Way (bracket not included).
The 7-Way harness contains: Green (tail lights), Brown (right/stop), Red (left/stop), White (ground), Blue (trailer brakes), Yellow (backup), and Black (+12V battery).
The body harness contains red, black, and blue wires. The black wire connects to the vehicle's positive battery post. The blue wire (18 gauge) routes to the rear cargo door electrical harness.
The brake control harness contains white, blue, black, and red wires. The white wire connects to the vehicle chassis ground. The black wire connects to the vehicle's positive battery post. The blue wire (electric brake output) connects to the body harness blue wire. The red wire (cold side input) connects to the body harness red wire.
The 12 gauge blue wire is the chassis ground wire. It is routed to a suitable grounding point near the 10-pin connector. A 3/32" hole is drilled and the white wire is secured using the supplied eyelet and screw.

Apply heat directly to the butt connectors using a heat gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool before inspecting the splice and checking integrity.
Replace all coverings, grommets, or other components that were removed for ease of installation. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed.
The manual does not specify maintenance intervals or retorque requirements after installation. Ensure all connections remain tight and secure, and periodically inspect the harness for damage or loose wires.
First, ensure the T-One T-Connector ends are fully inserted and locked in place. Remove the Tow Harness power module 15 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. If the problem persists, check the chassis grounds and ensure ring terminals are in full contact with the vehicle's chassis. Remove the 15 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
The installation may have activated circuit protection. Start the vehicle and turn all functions off: tail (headlights), brake, and turns. Remove the Tow Harness power module 15 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. If power is still absent, ensure the 15 amp fuse is fully inserted into the fuse holder with no breaks. Verify the fuse holder is connected properly to the positive post of the battery. Remove the 15 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. Ensure the module is connected to B+. Using a tester or volt meter, check for voltage on either side of the yellow butt connector near the module. Remove the 15 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
