WARN Industries has built off-road recovery equipment since 1948, beginning with locking wheel hubs and expanding into the electric winch that made the brand a standard. The lineup covers truck, Jeep and SUV winches, powersports winches, industrial and hydraulic hoists, bumpers, mounting systems and rigging gear, manufactured in Clackamas, Oregon.
Arthur and Sadie Warn founded WARN Industries in 1948 with an idea for converting surplus World War II Jeeps into practical road vehicles. Arthur's locking wheel hub was the product that did it, and it went on to reshape the four-wheel-drive market. By 1954 WARN hubs were offered as factory optional equipment by major domestic automakers, and over the following decades the company supplied hubs as original equipment to Chrysler, Ford, GM, Kia, Nissan and others.
The defining moment came in 1959 with the electric winch. Before it, a vehicle-mounted winch ran off a power take-off and needed the engine turning to work. An electric winch could pull even with the vehicle stalled on a hill, which changed what recovery meant for four-wheelers, racers and ranchers. The M8274 arrived in 1974 and remains in the line. Today's truck, Jeep and SUV winches include the VR EVO, ZEON and ZEON Platinum families.
As the ATV market grew through the 1980s, WARN introduced the first purpose-built powersports winch and created a category. The current ATV and UTV winch range includes the VRX and AXON lines, the latter using a combined motor and contactor unit that cuts installation time substantially. Vehicle-specific winch mounts, bumpers and plow systems complete the fitment.
On the work side, WARN builds electric and hydraulic industrial winches and hoists for towing, utility, military and severe-duty applications, from the compact Drill Winch through 30,000 pound Series XL units and the modular Series G2. Recovery is supported by a full rigging range of straps, shackles, snatch blocks and dampers.
The company operates 180,000 square feet of manufacturing, engineering and office space in Clackamas, Oregon, employs close to 400 people, holds more than 100 patents and produces over 600 products under ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 certified systems.

You must disconnect two electrical connections: (1) fog lamps, located on the inside of the driver's side frame rail just behind the bumper, and (2) engine block heater harness, located just outside of the passenger side frame rail. These disconnections are required before removing the front bumper.
Follow this sequence: (1) Remove the license plate. (2) Disconnect fog lamps on the inside of the driver's side frame rail just behind the bumper. (3) Disconnect the engine block heater harness just outside of the passenger side frame rail. (4) Remove the outside bumper support bolts located behind the bumper on each side of the outboard frame rails. (5) Remove the plastic cover held on by snaps to expose the bumper attachment hardware (four bolts). (6) Remove the four bolts from around the tow hooks on each side. (7) With assistance, remove the front bumper.
After removing the impact bracket nuts and tow hook bolts from the frame rails, slide the frame extension bracket over the frame rail, aligning the four holes in the top of the frame on each side. Install hardware to secure the frame extension bracket as shown in the exploded view on page 2. Note that two 7/16 bolts on the other side frame bracket are not shown in the diagram. Do not fully tighten the hardware at this time; final tightening occurs after the winch carrier height is adjusted.
There are two brackets supplied in the kit. Choose based on your winch model: For 16.5 Ti models, use the smaller bracket (part number 98553, item A1). For all other winches, use the larger bracket (part number 98552, item A2).
Mount the control pack to the control pack bracket on the driver's side inside of the frame rail using two 7/16 x 1 1/4 bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Slide the control pack as far up as it can go without causing interference with the vehicle's plumbing. The bottom of the control pack should face you when standing in front of the vehicle. Position the wires coming out of the pack as close to the top of the bumper as possible.
The winch carrier should be sitting approximately 3/16 of an inch below the top of the frame extension bracket. Adjust the carrier to this height before tightening all hardware on the frame extension brackets and winch carrier.
Yes. From the inside of the bumper, remove the six screws holding the center airduct and license plate holder. Remove the two plastic retainers on each side to detach the center duct. Remove the center duct by rolling it out through the rear of the bumper, then reinsert the plastic retainers. Remove the rubber strips on each end of the bumper by removing all the plastic retainers on both sides. The manual also notes that it is essential to fit your plastic skirt kit to the bumper before reinstalling it; refer to the Warn Super Duty Skirt Kit instructions for complete details.
Use these torque specifications unless otherwise specified in the instructions: 1/4" = 8 lb-ft (11 N.m); 5/16" = 17 lb-ft (23 N.m); 3/8" = 30 lb-ft (40 N.m); 7/16" = 48 lb-ft (66 N.m); 1/2" = 74 lb-ft (100 N.m); 9/16" = 106 lb-ft (144 N.m); 5/8" = 148 lb-ft (200 N.m); 3/4" = 269 lb-ft (364 N.m). Metric equivalents are also provided in the torque table.
Do not fully tighten the frame extension bracket hardware when initially installing it (step 11). Tighten all hardware on the frame extension brackets and winch carrier only after the winch carrier height has been adjusted to sit approximately 3/16 of an inch below the top of the frame extension bracket (step 19).
Once the winch carrier and winch are in place, reinstall the factory tow hooks using the factory hardware (the bolts you removed in step 9).
Perform the following maintenance: (1) Inspect all parts on the winch, winch mount, and related hardware prior to each use, and replace all hardware that appears rusted or deformed. (2) Inspect all nuts and bolts prior to each use and tighten any that appear loose; replace stripped, fractured, or bent bolts or nuts. (3) Check all cables prior to use and replace cables that look worn or frayed. (4) Check all moving or rotating parts and remove debris that may inhibit free movement.
Follow these safety precautions: (1) Wear safety glasses when installing the kit, as drilling operations cause flying metal chips that can cause eye injury. (2) Use extreme caution when drilling on the vehicle; inspect the area to be drilled on both sides of the material before drilling and relocate any objects that may be damaged to avoid puncturing fuel lines, brake lines, electrical wires, or other objects. (3) Use extreme caution when cutting and trimming during fitting. (4) Remove jewelry and wear eye protection. (5) Never lean over the battery while making connections. (6) Never route electrical cables across sharp edges, through or near moving parts, or near parts that become hot. (7) Always insulate and protect all exposed wiring and electrical terminals. (8) Always use assistance when moving or lifting heavy parts. (9) Always tighten all nuts and bolts securely per the installation instructions. (10) Never operate this product with damaged or missing parts.
