The CURT 56425 is a powered converter wiring harness designed for SUVs and vans. It converts the vehicle's taillight signals into a 4-flat trailer connector, allowing you to tow a trailer with lights. The system includes a converter box, custom wiring harness with colour-coded wires (yellow for left turn, green for right turn, red for brake, brown for taillight), and a 4-flat dust cover.
The CURT 56425 is designed for SUVs and vans with rear hatch access and cargo hooks. The manual shows representative S-series vehicle locations. For specific vehicle compatibility, consult the vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer, as the manual does not list individual vehicle makes and models.
Yes. The converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground systems. If your vehicle uses a different electrical system, this product is not compatible.
Required tools are: ratchet, cutting tool, 10mm socket, wire crimper, socket extension, wire stripper, flathead screwdriver, electrical tape, and panel trim removal tool. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: a black converter box, custom wiring harness with colour-coded wires (yellow, green, red, brown), white ground wire with ring terminal, black power wire, provided ground screw, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties for securing loose wires, a 4-flat dust cover, and a 15-amp fuse holder with fuse.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Secure this wire down and away from the battery during the installation process. Reconnect it only after all other installation steps are complete and the 15-amp fuse has been installed.
You must remove: the side storage covers and all trunk floor coverings to expose the spare tire; three push fasteners from the vehicle skid plate (left, right, and center); the small trim piece under the locking latch to the hatch; the skid plate itself; the cargo hook caps from both sides; the 10mm bolts and cargo hooks from both sides; and the push fasteners on the side walls of the interior panel to access the taillight wiring connectors.
Using a panel trim removal tool, locate the vehicle taillight wiring connectors on the driver side (they will be similar to those on the new custom wiring product). Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side with the green wire.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The box must be mounted in a protected area. Failure to mount it in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire.
You should first locate an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame near the converter box to use as a grounding point. If no suitable existing fastener is available, you may drill a 3/32-inch pilot hole. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint; use an abrasive pad or paper to clean it. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Drilling is only required if no existing screw or bolt is available to use as a grounding point for the white ground wire. If an existing fastener is available, no drilling is necessary. If drilling is needed, a 3/32-inch pilot hole is required. Always check for miscellaneous items behind or under surfaces before drilling.
Signal circuits (left and right turn): 5.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 7.5 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Yellow wire = left turn signal; Green wire = right turn signal; Red wire = brake signal; Brown wire = taillight/running lights. These colour-coded wires connect to the vehicle's taillight connectors.
The power wire must be 12 GA (12 gauge) or larger. This wire routes from the vehicle battery to the converter box.
Route the 12 GA black power wire from the vehicle battery to the converter box, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. The black power wire connects to the positive (+) battery terminal. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete.
The maximum fuse rating is 15 amps. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk.
After connecting the 12-volt power wire to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. This should be done before completing the final steps of reinstalling removed items and reconnecting the negative battery terminal.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
