Yes, CURT part number 13158 is designed for 2010-Present Subaru Legacy Sedan models. The hitch has a weight-carrying capacity of 4,000 lbs. trailer weight and 600 lbs. tongue weight.
The CURT 13158 has a gross load capacity of 4,000 lbs. trailer weight and 600 lbs. tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower.
The kit includes: (4) carriage bolts 1/2-13 x 1 1/2, (4) hex flange nuts HFN 1213, (4) square hole spacers CM-SP6 (.250 x 1.00 x 3.00"), and (2) pieces of 1/2" fishwire.
Required tools include: 10mm and 3/4" sockets, 8" socket extension, socket wrench, torque wrench, power drill with 17/32" drill bit, rotary tool or die grinder with carbide bit, and tin snips or file. You will also need a pry bar, spray lubricant, marker, aviation shears, and wire to tie up the exhaust.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. The installation is rated as challenging difficulty.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times while installing this product.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two front holes in the frame rails using a 17/32" drill bit, one hole per frame rail. The holes are drilled using the hitch as a template after the hitch is centered on the vehicle.
The exhaust must be lowered by removing two rubber isolators from the muffler (one on each side) and one isolator from the exhaust tube forward of the muffler. The exhaust is then tied up with wire to prevent damage during installation. After hitch installation, the rubber isolators are reattached and the wire is removed.
Yes, the muffler heat shield must be trimmed. Remove the heat shield by removing four screws with a 10mm socket. Trim 1.125 inches from the heat shield using aviation shears according to the trim diagram to clear the hitch side plates. Save the screws and trimmed heat shield for reinstallation.
After removing the four rubber plugs from the frame rails (two per rail), use a die grinder with a carbide bit to enlarge the front holes just enough to allow the 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP6 spacers to pass through. Enlarge only enough for the hardware to fit; do not over-enlarge.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. Initially, bolts are hand-tightened only with a 3/4" socket during positioning. Final torquing to 110 lb-ft occurs after all holes are drilled and the hitch is properly centered.
Fishwire is a technique that uses the supplied 1/2" fishwire tools to thread the 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP6 spacers through the enlarged front holes and out through the rear mounting holes in the frame rails. This allows the bolts to be positioned before the front holes are drilled. The process is repeated after drilling the front holes.
Installation sequence: (1) Lower exhaust by removing isolators and tie up with wire. (2) Remove and trim heat shield. (3) Remove rubber plugs from frame rails. (4) Enlarge front holes with die grinder. (5) Fishwire bolts and spacers through enlarged holes. (6) Raise hitch and hand-tighten nuts. (7) Center hitch and drill front holes using hitch as template. (8) Fishwire bolts and spacers through drilled holes. (9) Hand-tighten nuts. (10) Torque all hardware to 110 lb-ft. (11) Reinstall heat shield and exhaust isolators.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This is an ongoing maintenance requirement, not a one-time check.
All non-trailer loads applied to this product must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
