They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Lincoln MKT (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 4,000 lbs. GTW and 400 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Lincoln MKT (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You will need an 8mm socket to remove the taillight housings. If you need to create a ground point, you will need a 3/32" drill bit. The manual does not specify other tools required for the installation.
The kit includes: a T-connector harness with yellow and green wire ends, a 4-flat connector, a black converter box, a white ground wire with eyelet and screw, double-sided tape, cable ties, and a fuse holder with 10 amp fuse (maximum). A ring terminal for battery connection is also shown in the wiring diagram.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery cable before wiring the power wire to the battery. This is a critical safety step to prevent electrical shock or short circuits during installation.
Open the rear hatch and remove both taillight housings by removing the screws on each using an 8mm socket. Pull out on the housing to locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness, which will have connectors similar to those on the T-connector harness.
Separate the connectors on the driver's side, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the T-connector end with the yellow wire in-between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Route the T-connector end with the green wire and the 4-flat down through the opening under the taillight. Under the vehicle, route the green wire across the backside of the bumper to the passenger side and up through the opening under the passenger side taillight. Then repeat the connection process on the passenger side using the green wire.
Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the vehicle using the double-sided tape provided. The exact location should be convenient and secure, away from moving parts and heat sources.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the converter box, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify that no miscellaneous items are hidden behind or under the surface to avoid damage or personal injury.
The wire colours represent the following functions: Green = Right turn, Red = Brake, Yellow = Left turn, Brown = Taillight. The yellow wire connects to the driver's side taillight harness, and the green wire connects to the passenger side.
Use 12 gauge wire or larger when routing the black power wire from the battery to the converter. The manual specifies 12 GA wire minimum for the battery connection.
Route the black 12 gauge power wire from the converter to the positive (+) battery terminal. Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. The negative battery cable must be disconnected before making this connection. After all other steps are complete, install the 10 amp fuse in the fuse holder.
The maximum fuse rating is 10 amps. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete.
When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. This prevents the wire from being damaged and causing electrical faults or safety hazards.
Secure any loose wires with the cable ties provided in the kit. Route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle and secure it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location.
Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the cable ties provided. Take care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components when routing the wire to the battery.
Before drilling any hole, verify that no miscellaneous items are hidden behind or under the surface where you plan to drill. This includes wiring, fuel lines, brake lines, or other components that could be damaged, causing personal injury or property damage.
If you need to drill a ground hole, the hole size is 3/32". Drill this hole only if a suitable existing ground point (such as a screw with nut in the vehicle frame) is not available.
