Yes, trimming of the bumper cover is required. Use aviation shears to trim the center of the bumper cover as shown in the Bumper Cover Trim diagram. Measure before cutting.
Two people may be required to ease installation. While one person may be able to complete the installation, having a second person will help with handling the bumper beam and hitch positioning.
The first step is to remove the tail light plastic push fasteners using a straight and Phillips screwdriver, then remove the two screws with a 10mm socket. Then pull each tail light rearward and unhook the wiring connector to remove the lens.
Remove the three push fasteners in the rear wheel wells and, if present, the three screws holding each mud flap. Then remove the seven push fasteners along the edge of the bumper cover using a straight screwdriver. Work from one side and gently pull the bumper cover away from the vehicle.
Remove the foam from the bumper beam to access the bolts. Remove the eight bumper beam bolts using a 14mm socket, then remove the bumper beam completely.
Fold the center bumper cover mounting tab flat against the rear bulkhead of the vehicle before raising the hitch and bumper beam back into position.
Raise the hitch and bumper beam back into position on the existing 10mm studs, center the hitch, and loosely reinstall the hex flange nuts that were removed from the bumper beam bolts. Do not fully tighten at this stage.
Torque all 10mm fasteners to 48 lb-ft. This applies to the hex flange nuts that secure the hitch to the rear bulkhead studs.
Torque all 10mm fasteners to 48 lb-ft.

According to the Bumper Cover Trim diagram, trim the center of the bumper cover. The diagram shows trim dimensions of 4 1/2 inches and 4 inches. Use masking tape to mark the trim line and aviation shears to cut. Measure before cutting to ensure accuracy.
Reinstall the bumper beam foam, then reinstall the bumper cover, mud flaps (if present), and tail lights. Ensure all components are properly seated and secured.
After installation, verify that all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Periodically check the receiver hitch during ownership to ensure all fasteners remain tight and the hitch is in good condition.
