Yes, CURT part number 13303 is designed for 2016-present BMW X1 SUVs. Verify your vehicle year and model match this range before purchasing.
The CURT 13303 is rated for a maximum of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 525 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower.
The CURT 13303 weighs 80 lbs.
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, 8mm socket, 3/4" socket, socket extension, power drill, 5/16" and 9/16" drill bits, safety glasses, die grinder, paint marker, and pry bar.
The kit includes: 5 bolts (1/2-13 UNC, 1-1/4", Grade 8, part 10-10278); 5 serrated flange nuts (1/2-13 UNC, Grade 8, part 20-00062); 5 square hole spacers 0.250 x 1.00 x 2.00" (part CM-SP12); and 5 pieces of 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and using proper tools to improve installation quality and reduce time.
Professional installation takes approximately 33 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation takes approximately 80 minutes.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill 5 holes: first using a 5/16" drill bit, then enlarging them with a 9/16" drill bit. Additionally, a die grinder is required to enlarge the 2 forward-most holes on each frame rail.
Yes. You must lower the exhaust by removing the 2 rearmost rubber exhaust isolators from the frame-mounted hangers. Be sure to support the exhaust during installation to prevent damage. The exhaust is reinstalled after the hitch is secured.
Yes. Temporarily remove the lower fascia by removing 2 push clips (1 on each side) using a pry tool, then remove 12 hex head screws along the bottom fascia using an 8mm socket. Gently unclip the fascia and set it aside for reinstallation after the hitch is installed.
The fishwire technique is used to route 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP12 spacers through enlarged forward-most holes into the rear-most holes of the frame rail. On the driver side, fishwire 2 carriage bolts and 2 spacers; on the passenger side, fishwire 1 carriage bolt and 1 spacer. Detailed diagrams are provided in the manual.
The reverse fishwire technique is used after the standard fishwire step to route additional 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP12 spacers into the frame from the opposite direction. This uses the same enlarged forward-most holes. Detailed diagrams are provided in the manual.
All fasteners must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This is done after the hitch is raised into position, the fishwires are removed, and all 5 flange nuts are loosely fastened.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Support the exhaust during installation to prevent damage. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized CURT installer for assistance.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this hitch must be supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for further information.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the installation.
The installation difficulty is rated as moderate to challenging. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
