The CURT 13451 trailer hitch has a gross trailer weight (GTW) capacity of 7,000 lbs. and a tongue weight (TW) capacity of 700 lbs. For weight distribution towing, the weight distribution (WD) capacity is 7,000 lbs. with a WD tongue weight (WDTW) of 700 lbs. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Yes. The CURT 13451 requires trimming of both the bumper beam mounting plate and the lower fascia panel. The bumper beam mounting plate must be trimmed by 1" on both sides. The lower fascia panel must be marked and trimmed according to the trim diagram provided in the manual (4" width, 1" height, 3-3/4" depth reference). You must obtain the vehicle owner's permission before performing any trimming.
Required tools include: ratchet, drill, sockets (8mm, 13mm, 18mm), 3/16" drill bit, 6" socket extension, flathead screwdriver, plastic rivet gun, tape measure, panel trim removal tool, rotary tool or reciprocating saw, and torque wrench. A tools reference guide is available at curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
The CURT 13451 includes one trailer hitch and four plastic rivets (6mm). The manual notes that rivets cannot be reused and the supplied replacements are for use during reinstallation of the wheel well trim.
Installation requires removal of: rear wheel well trim on both sides, hidden rivets under the wheel well trim and fascia (drilled out with 3/16" bit), three underbody panels (24 fasteners using 8mm socket), rear reflectors on both sides, rear fascia (with electrical harness disconnection on passenger side), four push fasteners from appearance panels, exhaust system (one nut per side using 13mm socket), backup sensor and hands-free sensor from bumper beam, and the bumper beam itself (eight M12 nuts using 18mm socket). All components are reinstalled after hitch installation.
All M12 fasteners securing the hitch must be torqued to 55 ft-lbs. These are the eight M12 bolts that secure the hitch and trimmed bumper beam in place, using the same nuts that were removed from the original bumper beam mounting.
Yes. A 3/16" drill bit is required to drill out the center of rivets hidden under the wheel well trim on each side and rivets located on the underside of the fascia on each side. These rivets cannot be reused. The supplied plastic rivets (6mm) are replacements for reinstallation of the wheel well trim.
Two trimming operations are required: (1) Trim the bumper beam mounting plate by 1" on both sides using the trim diagram as reference. (2) Mark and trim the lower fascia panel according to the trim diagram (4" width, 1" height, 3-3/4" depth). Additional trimming of the rear appearance panels may be needed during reinstallation if interference with the bumper beam is noticed. Owner permission must be obtained before any trimming.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. When lowering the exhaust system, it must be properly supported. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. After installation, periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. The manual does not specify the frequency of inspection or which specific components require checking.
Yes. The eight M12 nuts removed from the original bumper beam mounting in Step 8 are reused to secure the hitch and trimmed bumper beam in Step 10. These nuts must be torqued to 55 ft-lbs.
