Yes. You must lower the vehicle exhaust from its hangers before installation. You will also need to remove the exhaust isolator, which will be re-attached later in the installation process. The exhaust is reconnected to the hangers once installation is complete.
Remove the brackets at the end of the frame that are positioned in the hitch mounting location. Also lower and remove the exhaust isolator from the lowered exhaust system.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill out the front mounting hole to 17/32" using the hitch as a template. This is a permanent modification to the vehicle frame.
The front mounting hole must be drilled to 17/32". Use the hitch as a template to locate and drill this hole.
The kit includes: one 5/16-18 UNC flange nut, two 1/2-13 UNC hex head cap screws (1-1/2" long), six 1/2-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, one 5/16-18 UNC hex head cap screw (1-1/4" long), two 0.250 x 1.50 x 2.00" square hole spacers, two 0.188 x 1.00 x 3.00" square hole spacers, four 1/2-13 UNC carriage bolts (1-3/4" long), and one 1/2" fishwire.
All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft/lbs. This includes the flange nuts and hex bolts used to attach the hitch to the frame and side brackets.
1. Lower the vehicle exhaust from hangers. 2. Remove frame brackets at the hitch mounting location. 3. Remove the exhaust isolator. 4. Fishwire carriage bolts and spacers through the frame and out the rear mounting holes. 5. Raise the hitch into position and attach using 1/2" flange nuts. 6. Install 1/2" hex bolts through the side brackets on both sides, attach with 1/2" flange nuts. 7. Drill the front mounting hole to 17/32" using the hitch as a template. 8. Fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer through the frame rail access slot near the gas tank and out the front hole, attach with 1/2" flange nut. 9. Re-attach the exhaust isolator to the bracket using 5/16" hardware and to the isolator hanger. 10. Torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft/lbs. 11. Reconnect the exhaust to the hangers.
Fishwire is a technique for routing fasteners (carriage bolts and spacers) through the vehicle frame. The 1/2" fishwire is included in the kit and is used to guide the carriage bolts and spacers through the frame channels and out the mounting holes.
The front mounting hole is accessed through an access slot located on the inside of the frame rail near the gas tank. You will drill this hole to 17/32" using the hitch as a template, then fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer through the access slot and out this hole.
A 1/2" hex bolt is installed through each side bracket and the hitch plate, then secured with a 1/2" flange nut. This is done on both sides of the hitch. These bolts are torqued to 110 ft/lbs.
One end of the exhaust isolator is attached to the bracket provided with the hitch using the 5/16" hardware. The other end is attached to the original isolator hanger. The exhaust is then reconnected to its hangers.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This helps maintain safe operation and prevent loosening due to vibration and use.
Curt Manufacturing warrants the hitch to be free of defects in material and workmanship at the time of retail purchase by the original purchaser. If defective, Curt may repair or replace it at their option when returned prepaid with proof of purchase. Warranty is voided by alteration, misuse, or improper installation.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, even though the hitch is rated for 6,000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight distribution hitch. Your vehicle's limits take priority.
