Part number 13087 is designed for 1996–2002 Toyota 4Runner models in both 2-door and 4-door configurations. Verify your vehicle year and door count against this range before purchasing.
No. The manual explicitly states "NO DRILLING REQUIRED." The hitch uses existing M12 bolt holes in the frame rails where the factory tow hooks are mounted.
The manual does not specify required tools. You will need a torque wrench to tighten fasteners to the specified values (86 lb.-ft. for M12 fasteners and 75 lb.-ft. for 1/2" fasteners). A socket set and basic hand tools are likely necessary, but the manual does not list them.
The kit includes four 1/2"-13 UNC hex head cap screws (HHCS), grade 5, 1-1/2" long (part 10-10035), and four 1/2" conical tooth washers (part 30-00149). The hitch also includes two weldnut plate weldments (CM-NP4W and CM-NP3W). Installation reuses the existing M12 bolts and tow hooks from your vehicle.
1. Remove the factory tow hooks from the vehicle frame. 2. Position the weldnut plates inside the frame rails as shown in the diagram. 3. Raise the hitch into position, align the side brackets with the existing tow hook holes, and reinstall the existing M12 bolts and tow hooks. 4. Insert a 1/2" bolt and conical tooth washer through the rearmost existing hole in the hitch and hand-tighten into the weldnut plate. 5. Insert a 1/2" bolt and conical tooth washer through the foremost existing hole in the hitch and hand-tighten into the weldnut plate. 6. Torque all M12 fasteners to 86 lb.-ft. and all 1/2" fasteners to 75 lb.-ft.
Torque all M12 fasteners to 86 lb.-ft. These are the existing factory bolts that secure the hitch to the frame rails.
Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 75 lb.-ft. These are the new bolts (part 10-10035) that attach the hitch to the weldnut plates.
Hand-tighten the 1/2" bolts in steps 4 and 5 only. Do not fully tighten them until step 6, after both bolts are in place. This allows you to align the hitch properly before final torquing.
Curt Manufacturing warrants the product to be free of defects in material and workmanship at the time of retail purchase by the original purchaser. If defective, Curt may repair or replace it at their option when returned prepaid with proof of purchase. Warranty is voided by alteration, misuse, or improper installation. Curt's liability is limited to repair or replacement and excludes incidental or consequential loss or damage.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a maintenance interval, so regular visual inspection before towing is recommended.
No. The manual explicitly states: "DO NOT EXCEED VEHICLE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED TOWING CAPACITY." Even though the hitch has its own load ratings, you must respect your vehicle's limits.
