Each air spring provides up to 1,000 pounds (454 kg) of load-leveling support when installed into the vehicle's coil springs. The kit includes two air springs, so the total support capacity is up to 2,000 pounds (908 kg). Each cylinder is rated at a maximum of 35 PSI (2.4 BAR).
Required tools include: needle nose and regular pliers, 5/16" drill bit, drill, hose cutter or razor blade or sharp knife, hoist or floor jack, 2 safety stands, safety glasses, air compressor or compressed air source, spray bottle with dish soap/water solution, and tire spoon or blunt instrument. The manual does not specify whether professional installation is required.
The kit includes: 2 air springs (46136), 15 feet of air line (20937), 6 zip ties (10466), 2 valve caps (21230), 4 5/16" hex nuts (21233), 2 rubber washers (21234), 2 star washers (18411), 2 M8 flat washers (18501), 1 tee fitting (21236), 2 Schrader valves (21455), and 6 air line clamps (10638).
1. Jack up the rear of the vehicle or raise on a hoist. 2. Support the frame with 2 safety stands. 3. Lower the axle or raise the body until the coil springs are completely extended (wheels hanging). Observe tension on brake lines and do not strain or overextend them during this process.
First, remove the black plastic cap from the barbed stem on the air spring and exhaust the air by rolling it up toward the stem. Replace the cap to hold its flat shape. Fold the air spring into a "hot dog bun shape". Insert the flattened end into the top opening of the coil spring with the stem at the bottom. Push the air spring down into the coil spring by hand or with a blunt instrument such as a spoon-type tire iron. When completely in the coil, remove the cap and allow the air spring to assume its "as molded" shape. Push the cylinder up to the top of the coil spring.
Using pliers, slide an air line clamp (K) over one end of the air line. Push the air line over the barbed stem of the air spring completely and slide the clamp over the barbed stem area. Once the air line is installed, completely push the cylinder to the bottom of the coil spring.
Route the air line up to the top of the upper crossmember, forward of the control arm, leaving some slack for articulation. Secure the air line to the upper crossmember with zip ties. Then route the hose to the upper left side crossmember and install the tee fitting using air line clamps. Continue routing the air line above the rear upper crossmember and secure to the end using zip ties. Finally, run the air line back behind the inner fender well to find a location for the Schrader valve, keeping as far away from the tail pipe as possible.
Single-path installation is recommended for vehicles with even weight distribution. It uses one tee fitting to supply both air springs from a single Schrader valve. Dual-path installation is used when weight varies from side to side and unequal pressures are needed to level the load. For dual-path, eliminate the tee fitting and route separate air lines for both air springs, each with its own control.
Yes. You must drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole for the Schrader valve. The manual states "Drill a 5/16" (8mm) hole, if necessary" when selecting a location for the Schrader valve. The valve is mounted through this hole in the vehicle body or bumper.
Make clean, square cuts with a razor blade or hose cutter. Do not use scissors or wire cutters, as these will produce bad cuts that may not seal properly on the barbed fittings.
Use this procedure for all air line connections: 1. Slide the air line clamp (K) onto the air line. 2. Push the air line and air line clamp over the barbed stem so that the air line covers all the barbs. 3. Compress the ears on the air line clamp with pliers and slide it forward to fully cover the barbs.
Drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole in the vehicle body or bumper. Install the air line on the Schrader valve first. The assembly order from outside to inside is: valve cap, rubber washer (F) (serves as outside weather seal), star washer, flat washer, vehicle body or bumper, hex nut, Schrader valve, and air line clamp with nylon air line. The rubber washer provides the outside weather seal.
Minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). Maximum air pressure is 35 PSI (2.4 BAR). Never inflate beyond 35 PSI. The actual air pressure needed is dependent on load and gross vehicle weight rating. Do not exceed the vehicle manufacturer's maximum GVWR or payload rating.
Maintain at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from the exhaust system to the air line to prevent the air line from melting. This applies to both the air springs and air lines. If a heat shield was included in the kit, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
1. Clearance test: Inflate to 30 PSI (2 BAR) and verify at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables. 2. Leak test: Inflate to 30 PSI and check all connections for leaks using soapy water; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. 3. Heat test: Verify at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from heat sources. 4. Road test: After the preceding tests, inflate to recommended driving pressures, drive 10 miles (16 km), and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners and air leaks.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height and never inflate beyond 35 PSI (2.4 BAR).
Use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core. Spray the solution on all connections and look for bubbles indicating a leak. If the system develops an air leak, check all connections before deflating and removing the air spring. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested.
The valve cap (D) must be installed and used to keep debris from the tire from contaminating the valve core in the Schrader valve. This is especially important if the Schrader valve is installed in a location where tire debris could reach it, such as inside the rear wheel well.
Once the air lines have been installed, raise the suspension or lower the body completely and remove the safety stands. Inflate the air springs to 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). Then perform the installation checklist: clearance test at 30 PSI, leak test at 30 PSI, heat test, and road test.
The lower control arm has sharp edges. Be careful when working around this area during air spring installation.
