Yes. You must pull the factory jounce bumpers out of the cups and then remove the cups from the frame by removing the M8 bolt. This is done during the vehicle preparation step before installing the air spring system.
Two harness holders located forward of the rear brake line brackets on the inside of the frame rail, just behind the axle, must be removed to attach the upper bracket. Use needle nose pliers between the frame and the harness to squeeze the wire holders together and pull them out of the frame. Repeat for both sides.
Install a mounting bracket (J) onto the frame bracket (B) using the holes adjacent to the large slots with 1/4" flat head screws (N). Flip the bracket and cap the screws with 1/4" flat washers (R) and nylon lock nuts (O). On the same side, install a spacer (I) using the same 1/4" hardware. Torque all hardware to 100 lb.-in. (11 Nm). For the second frame bracket, flip it to create a mirror image (left and right specific). The holes are oversized intentionally; tighten hardware as specified.
Attach both frame brackets to the underside of the frame with the notch in the corner facing inboard and forward. Use the M8 button head cap screw (M) and snug it but do not torque at this time. The notch must face inside and forward to clear the emissions bracket. Install the frame attachment U-bolts (K) around the top of the frame through the frame bracket mounting holes, making sure the U-bolt goes between the wiring harness and frame. Cap with 3/8" flat washers (Q) and nylon lock nuts (P). Tighten the 3/8" nuts evenly and torque to 6 lb.-ft. (8 Nm). Then torque the 8mm bolts to 18 lb.-ft. (25 Nm).
Set the roll plates (E) on top of the air springs (D). Thread the fittings (F) into the air springs finger-tight, then tighten one and a half turns. With the fittings facing each other on both air springs, set the air spring brackets (C) on top making sure the notches face each other. Install the 3/8" flat head screws (G) finger-tight, then torque to no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Flip the assemblies upside down and set a roll plate (E) over both air spring assemblies. Set the lower brackets (A) onto the assemblies so the flange is on the opposite side of the notch and fittings. Attach using the holes closest to the flange (marked "A") with 3/8" flat head screws (G), torqued to no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm).
With the axle lowered, set the left and right assemblies onto the leaf springs, making sure the fittings have been turned inboard to avoid pinching them when lifting the axle. Raise the axle until the air spring bracket comes in contact with the frame bracket. Attach the two brackets together on both sides with 6 3/8" carriage bolts (L), flat washers (Q), and nylon lock nuts (P), torqued to 16 lb.-ft. (21 Nm). Attach the lower brackets to the leaf springs with the lower bracket U-bolts (H), 3/8" flat washers (Q), and nylon lock nuts (P), torqued evenly to 16 lb.-ft. (21 Nm). Raise the axle all the way up and remove the jack stands and jack.
Route the nylon air lines from the air springs to Schrader valves. It is recommended that the air line be routed along the top of the frame, forward of the axle, then down to the fitting. Install the air line thermal sleeve over the air line on the passenger's (right) side before inserting it into the fitting. Cut the air line in half with clean, square cuts using a razor blade or hose cutter—do not use scissors or wire cutters. Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis. Do not pinch or kink the air line. The minimum bend radius is 1" (25 mm). Leave at least 2" (50 mm) of slack in the air line to allow for movement. Secure the air lines to the upper coil spring mount with the supplied zip ties (BB). Keep at least 6" (150 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system.
The manual shows three possible locations for Schrader valves: inside the fuel tank filler door (A), inside rear wheel wells (B), or in the license plate or rear bumper area (C). You must drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole in your chosen location. The manual shows one example installation location but does not specify which location is recommended for the Nissan Frontier. Contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 for specific fitment guidance.
Frame bracket mounting bracket and spacer hardware: 100 lb.-in. (11 Nm). Frame attachment U-bolts (3/8" nuts): 6 lb.-ft. (8 Nm). M8 bolts attaching frame brackets to frame: 18 lb.-ft. (25 Nm). Air spring bracket flat head screws: no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Lower bracket flat head screws: no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Air spring bracket to frame bracket carriage bolts: 16 lb.-ft. (21 Nm). Lower bracket U-bolts to leaf springs: 16 lb.-ft. (21 Nm).
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI (7 BAR). The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). Never inflate beyond 100 PSI. The air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and gross vehicle weight rating.
Do not exceed the maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload rating as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate the air springs beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR). Check air pressure weekly. Keep at least 6" (152 mm) of clearance between air springs and air lines and heat sources. Do not pinch or kink the air lines, and maintain a minimum bend radius of 1" (25 mm).
Perform the following checks: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 40-60 PSI and ensure at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. (2) Leak test—inflate to 40-60 PSI and check all connections for leaks; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (3) Heat test—ensure at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from heat sources; install a heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—after 500 miles (800 km), recheck all bolts for proper torque. (5) Road test—drive 10 miles (16 km) and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height and never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR). If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. After 500 miles (800 km), recheck all bolts for proper torque.
Use a spray bottle with a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core. Bubbles will form at any leak location. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested. If a leak is found, deflate and remove the air spring to repair or replace the affected component.
