No. The installation of the LoadLifter 5000 does not alter the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must check your vehicle's owner's manual and never exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Your vehicle may be equipped with a rear brake proportioning valve, and any type of load assist product could affect brake performance. Air Lift recommends that you check with your dealer before installing this product. If your vehicle does not have a rear brake proportioning valve or is equipped with an anti-lock brake system, installation will have no effect on brake system performance.

Normal Ride Height is the distance between the bottom edge of the wheel-well and the center of the hub with the vehicle in the "as delivered" condition. It is important to measure and record this height before installation because you will need to raise the axle or drop the body back to this height during installation to ensure proper air spring alignment and function.
Yes. The jounce bumper must be removed on both the driver and passenger sides. The air spring unit will install in place of the jounce bumper. The lower bracket tab straddles the jounce bumper strike plate.
The driver-side emergency brake cable must be unbolted and loosened. Remove the nut and cable bracket and pull it loose from the frame, but retain the fasteners for re-attaching. The cable will be re-attached after the air spring is installed. The passenger side does not have an emergency brake cable to disconnect.
1. Set the roll plate (D) on the top and bottom of the bellows. 2. Install the swivel air fitting (E) into the top of the air spring (A) by tightening finger-tight plus one and one-half turns with a 7/16" open-end wrench on the metal hex nut only—do not overtighten. 3. Insert carriage bolt (G) up through the driver-side upper bracket (B1). 4. Set the bracket and carriage bolt assembly on top of the bellows and attach with two bolts (M) and lock washers (N).
Yes. You must drill a 3/8" hole through the jounce bumper strike plate using the existing holes in the lower bracket as a template. You must also drill a 5/16" hole to install the inflation valves at a location of your choice (wheel well flanges, license plate recess, under gas cap access door, or through license plate).
Yes. Cut the air line assembly (AA) in two equal lengths. When cutting, use a hose cutter (Air Lift P/N 10530), razor blade, or sharp knife to ensure a clean, square cut. Do not use wire cutters or scissors, as these tools may flatten or crimp the air line, causing leaks around the O-ring seal inside the elbow fitting. Cut off the air line leaving approximately 12" of extra air line before inserting into the air fitting.
On late model Excursions, it may be necessary to splay the tabs on the lower bracket to fit the jounce bumper strike plate properly. Do this by putting the bracket in a vice and bending the tabs slightly with a crescent wrench. Check fit by sliding the lower bracket onto the jounce bumper strike plate. It may be necessary to tap into place using a hammer.
Tighten the upper and lower brackets to the bellows to 15 ft/lbs.
Insert a bolt (H) and washer (K) through the bracket and strike plate. Install a washer (K) and nut (J) and torque to 16 ft/lbs.
Tighten the upper bracket mounting hardware to 15 ft/lbs.
Install the swivel air fitting (E) into the top of the air spring (A) by tightening finger-tight plus one and one-half turns with a 7/16" open-end wrench on the metal hex nut only. Do not overtighten.
Choose a convenient location for mounting the inflation valves. Popular locations are: the wheel well flanges, the license plate recess in bumper, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate itself. Make sure there is enough clearance around the inflation valves for an air chuck. Drill a 5/16" hole at the chosen location.
1. Drill a 5/16" hole at your chosen location. 2. Place a 5/16" nut (GG) and star washer (FF) on the air valve, leaving enough valve in front of the nut to extend through the hole and have room for the rubber washer (EE), flat washer (DD), and 5/16" nut (GG) and cap (CC). Approximately 1/2" of valve should be exposed after installation to easily apply a pressure gauge or air chuck. 3. Push the inflation valve through the hole and use the rubber washer (EE), flat washer (DD), and another 5/16" nut (GG) to secure it in place. Tighten the nuts to secure the assembly.
Route the air line along the frame to the air fitting on the air spring. Keep at least 6" of clearance between the air line and heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use plastic tie straps (BB) to secure the air line to fixed, non-moving points along the chassis. Tie straps should be tight but not pinch the air line. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for any movement that might pull on the air line.
The thermal sleeve (L) is included in the kit for the passenger side air line. Insert the thermal sleeve onto the air line before installing it into the fitting. This protects the air line from heat sources.
Cut the air line leaving approximately 12" of extra air line. Ensure a clean square cut. Insert the air line into the 90° swivel fitting. This is a push-to-connect fitting—simply push the air line into the fitting until it bottoms out. Approximately 9/16" of air line should be in the fitting.
The minimum air pressure is 5 PSI and the maximum is 100 PSI. The minimum pressure must be maintained at all times to keep the air spring in shape and ensure it moves throughout its travel without rubbing or wearing on itself. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI or more. A "loaded vehicle" refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both. The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 lbs. of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. Always adjust the air pressure to maintain normal ride height. Never exceed your vehicle's GVWR, regardless of air spring pressure or other load assist.
No. Compressed air can cause injury and damage to the vehicle and parts if not handled properly. Do not try to inflate the air springs until they have been properly secured to the vehicle.
After installation, inflate the air springs to 60 PSI and ensure there is at least 1/2" clearance around each bellow, away from anything that might rub against them. Be sure to check the tire, brake drum, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. Keep air lines at least 6" from heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter.
1. Inflate the air spring to 60 PSI. 2. Spray all connections and the inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water to check for leaks. You should be able to spot leaks easily by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. 3. After the test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore the Normal Ride Height, but not less than 5 PSI.
A 2 to 4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Check the air pressure again after 24 hours. If the loss is more than 5 lbs, retest for leaks.
Before road testing, complete the following checks: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 60 PSI and ensure at least 1/2" clearance around each bellow from tires, brake drums, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. (2) Leak test—inflate to 60 PSI and check all connections with soapy water solution; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (3) Heat test—ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources; install heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—recheck all bolts for proper torque; re-torque after 100 miles. (5) Road test—drive 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Check the air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Regardless of load, the air pressure should always be adjusted to maintain ride height at all times.
1. Check air pressure weekly. 2. Always maintain normal ride height; never inflate beyond 100 PSI. 3. If an air leak develops, use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. 4. Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI or more. 5. When increasing load, adjust air pressure to maintain normal ride height. 6. Always add air in small quantities, checking pressure frequently. 7. When raising the vehicle by the frame, ensure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce tension on suspension/brake components. 8. Periodically check fasteners for tightness and check air springs for signs of rubbing; realign if necessary. 9. Periodically spray air springs with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other abrasive debris.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify and move the source if possible. If relocation is not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. If professionally installed, consult the installer. Check all fasteners for tightness.
1. Check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. 2. If still leaking, check the threaded connection by tightening the swivel fitting another 1/2 turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible, then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
1. Check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. 2. Check the air line connection by removing the air line from the barbed type fitting. Do not cut it off, as this will usually nick the barb and render the fitting useless. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use a pair of pliers or vice-grips to pull/twist the air line off the fitting.
If the preceding troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, it is possibly caused by a failed air spring—either a factory defect or an operating problem. Call Air Lift Technical Service at 1-800-248-0892 for assistance.
If the air pressure drops more than 5 PSI after 24 hours, there is a leak that must be fixed. Use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings. Inspect air lines for pinching (tie straps may be too tight), holes, cracks, kinks, or folds. Either fix the leak yourself or return to the installer for service.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely.
No. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, but it requires significant effort. However, an on-board air compressor system allows you to inflate and deflate your air springs with the touch of a button from inside or outside the vehicle. Air Lift offers single or dual path systems with wireless or analog control options.
Yes. The vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period of time, support the axle with jack stands in order to take the tension off of the air springs. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
When raising the vehicle by the frame, make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce the tension on the suspension/brake components. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
Pressure determination comes down to three things: level vehicle, ride comfort, and stability. (1) Level vehicle—if headlights are shining into the trees or the vehicle is leaning to one side, raise the air pressure to correct these problems. (2) Ride comfort—if the vehicle has a rough or harsh ride, try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. (3) Stability—stability translates into safety and should be the priority. Stability issues include roll control, bounce, dive during braking, and sponginess. Tuning out these problems usually requires an increase in pressure. Start with the vehicle level or slightly above. When in doubt, always add air. If the front dives while braking, increase pressure in the front air bags if equipped. If air bags have bottomed out, increase pressure. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle for uneven loads; as much as a 50 PSI difference is not uncommon.
The LoadLifter 5000 is designed for 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs. For specific vehicle fitment confirmation, contact Air Lift at (800) 248-0892.
Tighten upper and lower brackets to bellows to 15 ft/lbs. Tighten upper bracket mounting hardware to 15 ft/lbs. Tighten strike plate bolt to 16 ft/lbs. Tighten air fitting finger-tight plus one and one-half turns with a 7/16" wrench.
No. The LoadLifter 5000 does not alter GVWR or payload. Never exceed your vehicle's maximum load limits. Exceeding GVWR is dangerous and voids the warranty.
First, check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. If the leak persists, tighten the swivel fitting another 1/2 turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible, then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
First, check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. If the leak persists, check the air line connection by removing the air line from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use a pair of pliers or vice-grips to pull/twist the air line off the fitting.
A pressure loss of more than 5 PSI in 24 hours indicates a leak. Use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings. Inspect air lines for pinching (tie straps may be too tight), holes, cracks, kinks, or folds. If the leak is at the swivel fitting or inflation valve, follow the specific repair procedures. If troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, the air spring may have a factory defect or operating problem; call Air Lift Technical Service at 1-800-248-0892.
Inspect the air line for pinching caused by tie straps that may be too tight. Loosen or replace the strap. If the air line has a kink or fold, reroute it to eliminate the kink. Ensure the air line has at least 2" of slack to allow for any movement that might pull on the air line, and keep at least 6" of clearance from heat sources.
