The LoadLifter 5000 is an air spring suspension support kit that provides up to 5,000 pounds of load leveling support. It uses reinforced, commercial-grade convolute bellows (manufactured like a tire with layers of rubber and cords) and is adjustable from 5–100 PSI. The kit helps level the vehicle when carrying heavy loads and is designed for 3/4- and 1-ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs.
Kit 57395 (MN-982) is designed for Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 with single or dual rear wheels and 2-wheel drive. The manual does not specify model years, so contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 to confirm your specific vehicle year and configuration are compatible.
Yes, the kit is compatible with fifth-wheel hitches, but the installation method depends on the hitch type. If you have the standard factory Reese fifth-wheel hitch purchased with the truck, use the supplied hardware. If you have an aftermarket fifth-wheel hitch with side plates along the frame, you may need to reuse the existing hardware or drill a 1/2" hole through the plate using the frame slot as a template. Contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 if you are unsure of your hitch type.
No. The installation of this kit does not alter the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must check your vehicle's owner's manual and never exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Required tools include: metric and standard open-end box wrenches (set), ratchet with metric and standard sockets (set), drill with 5/16" drill bit, torque wrench, hose cutter or sharp knife, hoist or floor jack, two safety stands, safety glasses, air compressor or compressed air source, and a spray bottle with dish soap and water solution.
The kit includes 2 lower brackets, upper braces and brackets for driver and passenger sides, clamp bars, spacers, roll plates, 2 air springs, L-bracket, carriage bolts (various sizes), hex cap screws, flat washers, lock washers, nylon lock nuts, serrated flange lock nuts, U-bolts, 90° swivel fittings, P-clamp, air line assembly, zip ties, valve caps, rubber washers, and a heat shield. See the Hardware List on page 3 for complete part numbers and quantities.
Raise the vehicle using a hoist or floor jack and support it with jack stands or equivalent in a way that allows the axle to be safely dropped away from the frame. This is necessary to position the air spring assemblies between the axle and frame. The manual shows a drive-on hoist as one option (Figure 2). Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Jounce bumpers are rubber stops mounted under the frame above the axle. Yes, you must remove them before installation. Wire brush the stud on the jounce bumper and use penetrating oil to help with removal. The socket size for the nut is typically 15 mm. The jounce bumper holes will later be used to mount the air spring assembly.
Yes. You must drill 5/16" holes to install the inflation valves. Additionally, if your truck has an aftermarket fifth-wheel hitch with side plates that do not have existing hardware on the side where the frame slot is located, you will need to drill a 1/2" hole through the plate using the slot as a template. Before drilling, clear any electrical or hard lines from the area to avoid damage.
Yes, if your truck has emissions or fuel lines running along the inside of the frame rail (common on gas engine models), you must carefully push the line holder out of the frame above the axle and relocate the lines. You may also need to remove emissions/fuel line and electrical wire loom retaining clips forward or rearward of the axle. These will be reused after the upper brace is installed. Minimize damage to line holders as they will be reattached.
Yes. You must cut the air line assembly into two equal lengths and then cut each line to approximately 12" of extra length before inserting into the fitting. Use a sharp knife or hose cutter and make clean, square cuts. Do not use scissors or wire cutters, as these tools may deform the air line and cause leaks. Do not cut at an angle.
The bellows must be attached to the lower bracket using two 3/8"-24 hex cap screws (EE), two 3/8" lock washers (FF), and two 3/8" flat washers (V). Torque to no more than 20 lb.-ft. Similarly, when attaching the upper bracket to the bellows, use two 3/8" flat washers (V), 3/8" lock washers (FF), and 3/8"-24 X 7/8" hex cap screws (EE), and torque to no more than 20 lb.-ft.
Cap the 3/8"-16 X 1.25" carriage bolts (O) with a 3/8" flat washer (V) and 3/8" nylon lock nut (U) on both sides and torque to 15 lb.-ft.
Tighten the axle clamp bar hardware evenly until it touches the axle, then torque the axle clamp bar bolts to 16 lb.-ft. on both sides. If necessary on some models, do not tighten the passenger's side evenly so that the clamp bar will clear the hard brake line.
Torque the leaf spring U-bolt hardware to 10 lb.-ft. on both sides. Once tight, the upper and lower brackets will not be parallel and may look out of alignment, but this is normal due to the way the brackets are designed.
Attach the P-clamp to the corner of the lower bracket using a 5/16"-18 hex cap screw (QQ), 5/16" flat washer (PP) through the P-clamp and the hole in the corner of the lower bracket, capped with another 5/16" flat washer (PP) and 5/16"-18 nylon lock nut (RR). Tighten securely. The manual does not specify a torque value for this fastener.
Yes. You may need to disconnect the wiring harness from the driver's side frame rail to gain clearance for the upper brace. Also, push out the harness connector that holds the electrical lines going to the gas/urea tank in or out of the tank bracket. This improves socket and bolt access for installing and tightening the frame brace. After tightening the hardware, push the connector back into the gas/urea tank connector mounting hole. If the connector broke during disassembly, wire tie it to the bracket.
The kit includes 90° swivel fittings (part number 21837, qty 2) that connect the air lines to the air springs. These are push-to-connect fittings. The air line assembly (part number 20086) is cut into two equal lengths and then trimmed to approximately 12" before insertion into the fitting. The fitting should have approximately 9/16" of air line inserted to obtain a good seal.
Choose a convenient location for the inflation valves, such as wheel well flanges, license plate recess, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate. Ensure there is enough clearance for an air chuck. Drill 5/16" holes at the chosen locations. Place a 5/16" nut and star washer on the air valve, leaving enough valve exposed (approximately 1/2") to easily apply a pressure gauge or air chuck. Push the valve through the hole and secure with a rubber washer, flat washer, and another 5/16" nut. Tighten the nuts to secure the assembly.
Route the air line along the frame to the fitting on the air spring, maintaining at least 6" clearance between the air line and the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis. Ensure tie straps are tight but do not pinch the air line. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for movement that might pull on the air line. Do not bend the 1/4" hose at a radius less than 1" or the 3/8" hose at a radius less than 1.5". The hose should be straight beyond the fitting for 1" before bending.
Yes. A heat shield is included in the kit. Before installing the right (passenger) side hose, install the hose heat shield over the hose. Once the hose has been inserted into the fitting, push the heat shield up to the fitting. Additionally, a separate heat shield must be attached to the exhaust pipe using clamps to maintain at least 6" clearance between air springs and air lines from heat sources.
The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI. The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. The kit can safely be run at zero air pressure when unladen (no load). Never exceed 100 PSI, as this is the maximum inflation pressure rating for the air springs.
Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI. A "loaded vehicle" refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both. The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The required air pressure will vary depending on the state of the original suspension. Remember that loads carried behind the axle (including tongue loads) require more leveling force (pressure) than those carried directly over the axle. Always maintain normal ride height and never exceed your vehicle's GVWR, regardless of air spring pressure or other load assist.
After installation, inflate the air springs to 75–90 PSI and check for at least 1/2" clearance from anything that might rub against each sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. Also ensure at least 6" clearance between air springs and air lines from heat sources. If a heat shield was included, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
Inflate the air spring to 30 PSI. Spray all connections and the inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks easily by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. After the test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore the system to normal ride height (do not deflate below 5 PSI). Check the air pressure again after 24 hours. A 2–4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Retest for leaks if the loss is more than 5 PSI.
Before road testing, perform the following checks: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 75–90 PSI and verify at least 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. (2) Leak test—inflate to 75–90 PSI and check all connections for leaks; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (3) Heat test—ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources and install heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—recheck all bolts for proper torque. (5) Road test—drive the vehicle 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify the source and move it if possible. If relocation is not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. Check all fasteners for tightness. If professionally installed, consult the installer if issues are found.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI. If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely.
No. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, but it requires significant effort. Air Lift offers on-board air compressor systems for hassle-free control; learn more at www.airliftcompany.com/products/compressor-systems.
The vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period, support the axle with jack stands to take the tension off the air springs. If it becomes necessary to raise the vehicle by the frame, make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce tension on the suspension and brake components. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
On occasion, give the air springs a hard spray with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other debris.
If the system loses pressure overnight, perform a leak test on the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings in the control system. Check to make sure air lines are seated in connectors. Inspect fittings with soapy water. If a leak is found at the fitting, trim 1" off the end of the air line (making a clean, square cut) and reinsert it into the push-to-connect fitting. If the threaded connection leaks, tighten the swivel fitting another half turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, re-coat the threads with thread sealant, and reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible, then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
Look for a kink or fold in the air line. Replace any air line that has been kinked. Also check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting.
First, check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. If that does not resolve the leak, check the air line by removing it from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use a pair of pliers or vice grips to pull or twist the air line off the fitting. Do not cut off the air line completely, as this will usually nick the barb and render the fitting useless. If these steps do not resolve the problem, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
