Yes, the kit is compatible with B&W hitch applications. However, special modifications are required. On B&W part number 1199R with the hitch in the 49" position only, you must trim 1/4" from the bottom of the center flange on the side plate and front cross member, and grind a slight chamfer on the back of the front mounting leg of the upper brackets to clear the bend radius of the large flange on the B&W side plate. On 2005 models, you must also remove the top rear shock bracket rivet on the passenger side only to mount the upper bracket.
Required tools include: hoist or floor jacks and 2 safety stands; safety glasses; torque wrench; 5/16", 7/16", and 9/16" open-end or box wrenches; crescent wrench; ratchet with 9/16", metric, and 1/2" deep well sockets; 3/8" and 5/16" drill bits (very sharp); heavy duty drill; hose cutter, razor blade, or sharp knife; air compressor or compressed air source; and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.

Raise the vehicle on a hoist or floor jacks and support it with 2 safety stands. Remove the wheels and obtain normal ride height. Ensure at least 8" of clearance between the tire and frame. For B&W hitch applications, follow the special application instructions on pages 5–6, which may include trimming flanges and grinding chamfers. On 2005 models with B&W hitches, remove the top rear shock bracket rivet on the passenger side.
1. Set a roll plate on both ends of the air spring with the radiused (rounded) edge facing the air spring so it is seated in both roll plates. 2. Install a 90° swivel air fitting finger tight plus 1.5 turns (do not overtighten). 3. Place the driver side upper bracket on top of the bellow and roll plate with legs facing down (upper brackets are side-specific with the small mounting hole facing forward). 4. Set the air spring on the driver side lower bracket and align the two holes in the base of the air spring with the two outer slots in the top of the lower bracket. 5. Loosely attach the lower bracket using flat washers, lock washers, and hex head bolts. The flange on the lower bracket must face the outside (tire-side) of the vehicle. Repeat for the passenger side.
1. Set the air spring over the axle. 2. Slide one spacer bar under the front leg and one under the rear leg of the lower bracket. 3. Depending on whether the vehicle has frame contact overloads or a regular leaf stack, attach the lower bracket to the leaf using the provided U-bolts. Torque to 16 lb.-ft.
For B&W hitch applications, align the two large holes with the existing B&W hitch frame brackets and use the existing 3/4" hardware supplied by B&W to attach the bracket. For all applications, align the upper bracket so that it is parallel to the lower bracket. Torque the 3/8" hardware to 40 lb.-ft. and torque the 3/4" hardware to 90 lb.-ft.
The upper bracket is slotted so the air spring can be adjusted forward and back. The bottom bracket is slotted so the air spring can be adjusted in and out. Using the slots in the top and bottom brackets, adjust the air spring so that it is perpendicular to both surfaces. Tighten top and bottom mounting hardware to no more than 10 lb.-ft.
Yes. You must drill 5/16" holes to install the inflation valves. Choose a convenient location such as the wheel well flanges, license plate recess in bumper, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate. Make sure there is enough clearance around the inflation valves for an air chuck.
Yes, but only on 2005 models with B&W hitch applications. You must remove the rear, top shock mounting rivet on the passenger side of the vehicle to provide a mounting hole for the upper bracket. This is a permanent modification required for fitment.
On B&W part number 1199R with the hitch in the 49" position only, you must: 1. Trim 1/4" from the bottom of the center flange on the side plate and front cross member. 2. Grind a slight chamfer on the back of the front mounting leg of the upper brackets to clear the bend radius of the large flange on the B&W side plate. These are permanent modifications required for proper fitment.
1. Choose a convenient location for the inflation valves (wheel well flanges, license plate recess, under gas cap, or through license plate). 2. Drill 5/16" holes. 3. Cut the air line assembly in two equal lengths. 4. Place a 5/16" nut and star washer on the air valve, leaving approximately 1/2" of valve exposed for a pressure gauge or air chuck. 5. Push the inflation valve through the hole and secure with rubber washer, flat washer, and another 5/16" nut. 6. Route the air line along the frame to the fitting on the air spring, maintaining at least 6" clearance from the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use zip ties to secure the line, leaving at least 2" of slack for movement. 7. Cut the air line leaving approximately 12" extra, making a clean square cut. Insert into the 90° swivel fitting until it bottoms out (9/16" of air line should be in the fitting). Wiggle the hose while inserting to ensure a good seal.
1. Attach the supplied clamp around the emergency brake cable and secure it to the lower bracket using the previously removed stock bolt. 2. Tighten securely. 3. Cut the existing emergency brake cable bracket close to the cable.
Use a sharp knife or hose cutter and make clean, square cuts. Do not use scissors or wire cutters because these tools may deform the air line, causing it to leak around fittings. Do not cut the lines at an angle. When trimming a line that is already installed, trim 1" off the end to ensure a clean, square cut.
Do not bend the 1/4" hose at a radius of less than 1" or bend the 3/8" hose at a radius of less than 1.5". Do not put side load pressure on the fitting. The hose should be straight beyond the fitting for 1" before bending.
Torque the U-bolts attaching the lower bracket to the leaf spring to 16 lb.-ft.
Torque the 3/8" hardware to 40 lb.-ft. Torque the 3/4" hardware (used on B&W hitch applications) to 90 lb.-ft.
Tighten the top and bottom mounting hardware securing the air spring to the brackets to no more than 10 lb.-ft.
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI. Although the air springs are rated at a maximum inflation pressure of 100 PSI, the air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and GVWR.
The recommended minimum air pressure is 5 PSI. The system can safely be run at zero air pressure unladen (no load). However, loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI. A 'loaded vehicle' refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both.
The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The required air pressure will vary depending on the state of the original suspension.
No. The installation of this kit does not alter the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. Check your vehicle's owner's manual and do not exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Inflate the air springs to 75–90 PSI and ensure at least 1/2" clearance from anything that might rub against each sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. Maintain at least 6" clearance between the air line and the exhaust system. If a heat shield was included in the kit, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
1. Inflate the air spring to 30 PSI. 2. Spray all connections and the inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks easily by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. 3. After the test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore the system to normal ride height. Do not deflate to lower than 5 PSI. 4. Check the air pressure again after 24 hours. A 2–4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Retest for leaks if the loss is more than 5 PSI.
1. Clearance test — Inflate to 75–90 PSI and ensure at least 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. 2. Leak test — Inflate to 75–90 PSI and check all connections for leaks; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. 3. Heat test — Ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources; install heat shield if included. 4. Fastener test — Recheck all bolts for proper torque. 5. Road test — Drive 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks. 6. Overnight leak down test — Recheck air pressure after 24 hours of use; if pressure drops more than 5 PSI, there is a leak that must be fixed.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify and move the source if possible. If it is not possible to relocate the cause of the abrasion, the air spring may need to be remounted. Check all fasteners for tightness.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
1. Check air pressure weekly. 2. Always maintain normal ride height; never inflate beyond 100 PSI. 3. If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. 4. Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI. 5. When increasing load, adjust air pressure to maintain normal ride height. 6. Always add air in small quantities, checking pressure frequently. 7. If raising the vehicle by the frame, set the system to minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce tension on suspension/brake components. 8. Periodically check fasteners for tightness and check air springs for signs of rubbing; realign if necessary. 9. Periodically spray the air springs with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other debris.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely.
Yes, the vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period of time, support the axle with jack stands in order to take the tension off of the air springs.
No. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
Pressure determination comes down to three things: level vehicle, ride comfort, and stability. 1. Level vehicle — If headlights are shining into the trees or the vehicle is leaning to one side, raise the air pressure to level it. 2. Ride comfort — If the vehicle has a rough or harsh ride, try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. 3. Stability — Stability translates into safety and should be the priority. Stability issues include roll control, bounce, dive during braking, and sponginess. Tuning out these problems usually requires an increase in pressure. Start with the vehicle level or slightly above. When in doubt, always add air. If the front dives while braking, increase pressure in the front air bags if equipped. If air bags have bottomed out, increase pressure. Adjust pressure up and down to find the best ride. If the vehicle rocks and rolls, adjust air pressure to reduce movement. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle; loads such as water, fuel, and appliances will cause the vehicle to be heavier on one side, and as much as a 50 PSI difference is not uncommon.
No. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, but it is labor-intensive. An on-board air compressor system allows for hassle-free control of the air springs. Learn more about Air Lift control systems at www.airliftcompany.com/products/compressor-systems.
Check for an improperly installed air line or holes or cracks in the air line. Leak test the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings in the control system. Also check that air lines are seated in connectors. Inspect fittings with soapy water. If the fitting seal or air line is compromised, trim the hose or re-seal the fitting. Ensure lines are cut straight.
Look for a kink or fold in the air line. Replace any air line that has been kinked.
1. Check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line. Be sure the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. 2. If it still leaks, check the threaded connection by tightening the swivel fitting another half turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible and then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
1. Check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. 2. Check the air line by removing the air line from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use a pair of pliers or vice grips to pull/twist the air line off of the fitting. Do not cut off the air line completely as this will usually nick the barb and render the fitting useless.
The kit is recommended for most 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs. For specific vehicle compatibility, contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 or visit airliftcompany.com.
You need a hoist or floor jacks, 2 safety stands, torque wrench, wrenches (5/16", 7/16", 9/16"), ratchet with sockets, 3/8" and 5/16" drill bits, heavy duty drill, hose cutter or sharp knife, air compressor, and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
Yes. You must drill 5/16" holes for the inflation valves. On 2005 models with B&W hitches, you must also remove the passenger side shock bracket rivet. B&W 1199R applications require trimming 1/4" from flanges and grinding chamfers.
Lower bracket U-bolts: 16 lb.-ft. Upper bracket 3/8" hardware: 40 lb.-ft. Upper bracket 3/4" hardware (B&W): 90 lb.-ft. Air spring mounting hardware: no more than 10 lb.-ft. Maximum air pressure: 100 PSI. Minimum: 5 PSI (0 PSI unladen).
No. The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate does not alter GVWR or payload. Do not exceed your vehicle's maximum load limits. Exceeding GVWR voids the warranty.
Inflate to 75–90 PSI and check: 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shocks, and cables; all air connections for leaks; 6" clearance from exhaust; all fasteners for proper torque. Drive 10 miles and recheck. Check pressure again after 24 hours; loss over 5 PSI indicates a leak.
Check air pressure weekly. Perform a 30-day or 500-mile inspection for rubbing, abrasion, and loose fasteners. Periodically spray with a garden hose to remove debris. Maintain minimum 25 PSI when loaded; never exceed 100 PSI.
