Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The DH2200 is designed for 2011-16 Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 trucks with Long or Standard Box. However, hitches manufactured prior to 4/14/16 will not fit 2016 model vehicles equipped with a frame-mounted brake line relocation bracket. If you have a 2016 model, verify the manufacturing date of the hitch or contact Blue Ox to confirm compatibility before purchase.
Yes, the DH2200 can be installed on trucks with bed liners. However, you must account for the bed liner thickness when measuring the ball location in the box bed. The standard measurement is 46-1/8" from the rear of the bed, but you will need to subtract the bed liner thickness from this measurement to ensure correct ball positioning.
The DH2200 is rated to 30,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight and 7,500 lbs Tongue Weight. However, you must also refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the maximum towing capacity of your specific truck and do not exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Exceeding any of these ratings could result in damage to your vehicle, personal injury or death.
Yes. The first step of installation is to remove the spare tire using the vehicle's jack handle tool, following the procedure in your vehicle's owner's manual. The spare tire is reinstalled at the end of the installation after the exhaust hanger is reattached.
Required tools include: torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 5" hole saw, 17/32" drill bit, 19/32" drill bit, 10MM socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, and 15/16" socket. You will also need Loctite RED to apply to all bolt threads before tightening. A board for drilling and a deburring tool are recommended to improve installation quality.
Yes. You must use a sufficient amount of Loctite RED on all bolt threads before tightening. This is a required step to ensure the integrity of the hitch assembly.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill a 5" hole through the truck bed, measured 46-1/8" from the rear (not the tailgate) and centered between the wheel wells. Additionally, after the cross members and center section are installed and tightened, you must drill two more holes using a 19/32" drill bit on both sides of the center section, closest to the ball location. Using a board while drilling decreases the chance of the bit wobbling out of position, and deburring the holes is recommended so the hitch sits tight against the bed.
Measure 46-1/8" from the rear of the bed (not the tailgate) forward and mark. Measure between the wheel wells and mark the center. Drill a 5" hole at this location using a 5" hole saw. If your truck has a bed liner, you must account for the bed liner thickness when making this measurement.
The installation instructions note that some drilling and trimming is required. The manual specifically addresses drilling but does not detail trimming procedures. Dimensional variations between vehicles may require slight modifications to the hitch to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. Contact Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051 if you encounter trimming requirements during installation.
The exhaust hangers must be removed and reinstalled during installation, but the exhaust itself does not need to be completely removed. On the passenger side only, remove two bolts from the exhaust hanger using a 10MM socket. Drop the exhaust by sliding the rubber insulators off the hanger studs (silicone spray eases this removal). After the hitch is installed, reinstall the exhaust hanger to the frame with three 3/8" washers between the frame and hanger, then reattach the exhaust to the factory hangers.
1. Install the rear cross member (36-1/2"L) in front of the bed hole, then slide it back to the backside of the hole. 2. Slide the front cross member (37-1/2"L) in at an angle until it is forward of the hole. 3. Install the center section, aligning it with the hole in the bed and securing it in place. 4. Bolt the cross members to the center section on both sides with four 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" bolts, 1/2" washers, and 1/2"-13 lock nuts on the inside, but do not fully tighten yet.
On the driver side, attach the support plate to the 5/8"-11 studs of the cross member with a 5/8" washer on the slotted end and 5/8"-11 lock nuts on both sides. Install 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" bolts with 1/2"-13 lock nuts into the lower three holes, with a 1/4" spacer on the inside of the middle hole. Repeat on the passenger side. If the vehicle is equipped with air bags, remove the nut and washer from the stud before installing the support plate, then reattach the washer and nut after the support plate is installed. Fully tighten all support plate hardware after installation.
After installing the center section, check the rotation of the top collar to ensure the bed is not rubbing against it and that it can rotate freely. If necessary, drop the center section and remove any obstructions that prevent free rotation.
After fully tightening all cross member and center section hardware, drill two holes using a 19/32" drill bit on both sides of the center section, closest to the ball location. Insert the 1/2"-13 U-bolts through the holes from the topside. On each U-bolt stud, install a 1/2" flat washer, spring, another 1/2" flat washer, and 1/2"-13 lock nut. Tighten until the washers are touching the spring without compressing it.
1. Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. 2. Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. 3. Release the locking collar to lock the ball in place. The manual includes instructions for removing the ball (pull straight up after rotating the collar) and storing it in the hitch when not in use.
Torque specifications for Grade 5 bolts (in foot-pounds): 1/4" = 10, 5/16" = 19, 3/8" = 33, 7/16" = 54, 1/2" = 78, 5/8" = 154, 3/4" = 257. Most DH2200 fasteners are Grade 5. Always apply Loctite RED to all bolt threads before tightening and use a torque wrench to achieve the correct specification.
Torque specifications for Grade 8 bolts (in foot-pounds): 1/4" = 14, 5/16" = 29, 3/8" = 47, 7/16" = 78, 1/2" = 119, 5/8" = 230, 3/4" = 380. If any Grade 8 bolts are used in your DH2200 assembly, use these specifications instead of Grade 5 values.
Torque specifications for Grade 8.8 metric bolts (in foot-pounds): 6MM = 6, 8MM = 16, 10MM = 31, 12MM = 54, 14MM = 89, 16MM = 161, 18MM = 222. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8, 8MM = 22, 10MM = 40, 12MM = 70, 14MM = 117, 16MM = 230, 18MM = 318. Verify which grade applies to your specific fasteners.
The vehicle must be securely blocked and brakes set before beginning to work underneath the vehicle. Do not use any open flame under the truck bed to cut or weld, as there is extreme danger of explosion or fire. Do not clamp the hitch over any wiring or brake lines. When inverting the ball, ensure proper clearance between the ball and the truck's differential and driveline to avoid damage.
Yes. Trailer brakes are required. This is a mandatory safety requirement for towing with the DH2200 hitch.
Always make sure the trailer is loaded slightly tongue-heavy. Do not pull a trailer that is lighter on the tongue end, as this creates unsafe towing conditions.
If the hitch is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. Do not use the hitch if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged hitch could result in more damage or serious injury. If you need replacement parts, order them through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Periodically clean any dirt or debris from the ball and ball housing. Moderately lubricate them with white lithium grease or equivalent grease. A plug is included with the hitch that can be used to cover the socket when the ball is removed for storage or transport.
Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray the cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. This protects the frame from corrosion after drilling.
The DH2200 kit includes: DH2200 Front Cross Member Angle (1), DH2200 Back Cross Member Angle (1), Hitch Ball (1), DH2200 Center Section (1), DS Support Plate (1), PS Support Plate (1), Spacer Plates 2" x 2" x 1/4" (2), 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5 (10), 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5 (4), 1/2"-13 x 3-3/4" x 2-1/2" U-Bolts (2), 5/8"-11 Hex Nylon Lock Nuts (4), 1/2"-13 Hex Flange Whiz Lock Nuts (14), 1/2"-13 Hex Nylon Lock Nuts (4), 1/2" Flat Washers (8), 5/8" Flat Washers (2), Compression Springs (4), and 3/8" Flat Washers (3). A plug for covering the socket when the ball is removed is also included.
No. You must use only genuine factory replacement parts on the DH2200 hitch. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Using non-genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Yes, the DH2200 fits 2011-16 Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 with Long or Standard Box. However, hitches made before 4/14/16 will not fit 2016 models with a frame-mounted brake line relocation bracket. Verify the hitch manufacturing date if you have a 2016 truck.
The DH2200 is rated for 30,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight and 7,500 lbs Tongue Weight. Always verify your vehicle's maximum towing capacity in your owner's manual and do not exceed any rating.
You need: torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 5" hole saw, 17/32" and 19/32" drill bits, 10MM socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, 15/16" socket, and Loctite RED. A board for drilling and deburring tool are recommended.
Yes. You must drill a 5" hole through the bed 46-1/8" from the rear, centered between wheel wells. After assembly, drill two more holes using a 19/32" bit on both sides near the ball. Account for bed liner thickness if installed.
No, but you must remove the passenger-side exhaust hanger (two 10MM bolts) and drop the exhaust by sliding rubber insulators off the studs. Reinstall with three 3/8" washers between frame and hanger after hitch installation.
Yes, trailer brakes are required. Always load the trailer slightly tongue-heavy and do not exceed the hitch's 30,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight or 7,500 lbs Tongue Weight ratings.
Periodically clean dirt and debris from the ball and housing. Lubricate with white lithium grease or equivalent. A plug is included to cover the socket when the ball is removed.
Drop the center section and remove any obstructions that are preventing the collar from rotating freely. The collar must rotate freely without rubbing against the bed. Check this during installation (Step 10) before fully tightening all hardware.
Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. Pull straight up on the ball to remove it from the hitch. If the ball is stuck, ensure the locking collar is fully rotated to fully release the latch pawl before pulling.
