Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The Blue Ox Gooseneck Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch DH2304 (Part #FDRWDH2304) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the DH2304 is designed for 2007-17 Chevy/GMC 1500 trucks with Standard and Short Box beds. The manual specifies this fitment explicitly. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and slight modifications to the hitch may be necessary to compensate for vehicle manufacturer tolerances.
The DH2304 is rated for a maximum Gross Towing Weight (GTW) of 30,000 lbs and a tongue weight of 7,500 lbs. However, you must not exceed your vehicle's maximum towing capacity as stated in your vehicle's owner's manual. Always refer to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and do not exceed the vehicle, tongue or hitch weight ratings.
Yes. Step 1 of the installation instructions requires removing the spare tire using the vehicle's jack handle tool, following the procedure in your vehicle's owner's manual. The spare tire is reinstalled at the end of installation (Step 13).
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill, tape measure, Loctite Red, 5" hole saw, 19/32" drill bit, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, 15/16" socket, and T25 Torx. You will also need a vehicle jack (for spare tire removal) and a board for drilling (recommended to prevent bit wobbling). A reciprocating saw is needed for heat shield removal.
Yes. Two types of drilling are required: (1) A 5" hole saw is used to drill through the truck bed at 44-1/8" from the rear, centered between the wheel wells (Step 5). (2) A 19/32" drill bit is used to drill two holes closest to the ball through the bed on both sides of the center section (Step 12). The manual recommends using a board while drilling to prevent bit wobbling and deburring the hole for a tight fit.
Yes. The heat shield must be removed by cutting on the backside of the bed frame rails on the underside of the bed above the axle (Step 3). The manual warns to be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw. Additionally, Step 7 requires lifting up on the front cross member angle to slightly bend the bed lip to allow the cross member to slide across the frame.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. However, the instructions require relocating the driver-side wiring loom (Step 4) and caution to be cautious of wiring when sliding cross members across the frame (Steps 6-7). For safety, consult your vehicle's owner's manual or a qualified technician regarding battery disconnection before working with vehicle wiring.
Before beginning installation: (1) Securely block the vehicle and set the brakes (required safety step). (2) Remove the spare tire using the vehicle's jack handle tool per your owner's manual. (3) Drop the exhaust by sliding the rear hanger out of the rubber insulator (silicone spray eases removal). (4) Remove the heat shield by cutting and removing two T25 Torx screws. (5) Remove the push pin from the driver-side wiring loom and temporarily relocate it. All removed components will be reinstalled after hitch installation.
The sequence is: (1) Slide the rear cross member in from the passenger side just behind the bed rail, slide it across the frame, then flip it upright with center four holes offset toward the bottom (Step 6). (2) Slide the front cross member in from the passenger side forward of the bed rail, lifting the angle to slightly bend the bed lip, then slide across the frame (Step 7). (3) Install the center section and bolt both cross members to it with 1/2" hardware without fully tightening (Step 8). Be cautious of wiring when sliding cross members.
Do not fully tighten hardware until after the rotation check in Step 11. After installing the u-bolts and fishwire assembly, check that the top collar rotates freely and the bed is not rubbing against it. If necessary, drop the center section and remove any obstructions. Only after confirming proper rotation should you fully tighten all hardware to the appropriate torque specifications.
There are two u-bolt installations: (1) Install u-bolts from inside the frame through the side plates with hardware, without fully tightening (Step 10). On the driver side, gently move brake lines for u-bolt installation. (2) For the two holes closest to the ball, drill with a 19/32" bit, insert 1/2"-13 u-bolts from the topside, and install a 1/2" flat washer, spring, another 1/2" flat washer, and 1/2"-13 lock nut on each stud. Tighten until washers touch the spring without compressing it (Step 12).
The manual provides general torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 inch bolts, and Grade 8.8 and 10.9 metric bolts. For example, 1/2" Grade 5 bolts are 78 ft-lbs, and 1/2" Grade 8 bolts are 119 ft-lbs. However, the manual does not specify which grade or torque value applies to each individual fastener location. Use Loctite Red on all bolts before tightening and tighten according to the torque chart. For specific torque values at each location, contact Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051.
In Step 11, insert the supplied 5/8" x 48" fishwire into the large hole in the side plate through the frame. Install the plate and carriage bolt onto the fishwire and pull it through the frame into the side plate. Install the lock nut onto the bolt. Repeat this process on both sides of the vehicle. This allows you to secure the side plates to the frame without direct access from underneath.
Measure from the rear of the bed (not the tailgate) forward 44-1/8" and mark. Measure between the wheel wells and mark the center. Using a 5" hole saw, drill through the bed at this location. The manual recommends using a board while drilling to prevent the bit from wobbling out of position, and recommends deburring the hole so the hitch sits tight against the bed.
The DH2304 includes: 1/2" Bolt Plate, hitch ball, exhaust hanger, center section, side plates, front and rear cross members, 1/2"-13 hex head bolts (Grade 5), 1/2"-13 and 1/2"-13 x 4-1/8" u-bolts, 5/8"-11 carriage bolts, hex flange lock nuts, hex nylon lock nuts, flat washers, lock washers, compression springs, 5/8" x 48" fishwire, and a ball housing plug. See the parts list on page 3 for complete details including part numbers and quantities.
To install the ball: (1) Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. (2) Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. (3) Release the locking collar. (4) Pull up on the ball to ensure it is locked into the housing. Always ensure the hitch ball is locked into the hitch prior to towing.
To remove the ball: (1) Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. (2) Pull straight up on the ball to remove it from the hitch. A plug is included with the hitch that can be used to cover the socket when the ball is removed.
To store the ball: (1) Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. (2) Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. (3) Release the locking collar. The included ball housing plug can be used to cover the socket when the ball is stored in the hitch.
Critical safety precautions: (1) Securely block the vehicle and set the brakes before working underneath. (2) Do not use open flame under the truck bed to cut or weld—extreme danger of explosion or fire. (3) Do not clamp the hitch over any wiring or brake lines. (4) When using power drills, be aware of torque and drill bit length dangers. (5) When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. (6) Ensure proper clearance between the ball and truck differential/driveline when inverting the ball. (7) Always ensure the hitch ball is locked before towing.
Towing safety requirements: (1) Trailer brakes are required. (2) Always ensure the trailer is loaded slightly tongue-heavy. Do not pull a trailer that is lighter on the tongue end. (3) Always ensure the hitch ball is locked into the hitch prior to towing. (4) Do not exceed the vehicle, tongue or hitch weight ratings—failure to follow vehicle manufacturer's recommendations could result in damage to your vehicle, personal injury or death.
Maintenance is minimal: periodically clean any dirt or debris from the ball and ball housing, and moderately lubricate them with white lithium grease or equivalent grease. No other routine maintenance is specified in the manual. If the hitch is involved in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused, as an accident can cause unseen damage.
If the hitch is involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the hitch if it is damaged or missing parts. For warranty coverage of defects, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
The DH2304 can be used with a bed liner, but compensation for the bed liner thickness must be accounted for when measuring the ball location in the truck bed. This means you will need to adjust your measurement from the rear of the bed forward to account for the additional thickness of the liner before drilling the 5" hole.
In Step 13, reinstall the exhaust to the factory hanger. If needed, use the supplied exhaust hanger to increase the clearance between the exhaust and hitch. The exhaust was removed in Step 2 by sliding the rear hanger out of the rubber insulator. Reverse this process to reinstall, and use silicone spray if needed to ease installation into the rubber insulators.
In Step 13, reinstall the driver-side wiring loom to its factory position. The loom was temporarily relocated in Step 4 by removing the push pin. Reverse this process to reinstall the loom and secure it with the push pin.
Yes, the DH2304 is designed for 2007-17 Chevy/GMC 1500 trucks with Standard and Short Box beds. Slight modifications may be necessary to compensate for vehicle manufacturer tolerances.
The DH2304 is rated for 30,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight and 7,500 lbs tongue weight. Do not exceed your vehicle's maximum towing capacity per your owner's manual.
Required tools: torque wrench, drill, tape measure, Loctite Red, 5" hole saw, 19/32" drill bit, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, 15/16" socket, and T25 Torx. A reciprocating saw is needed for heat shield removal.
Trailer brakes are required. Always load the trailer slightly tongue-heavy. Always lock the hitch ball before towing. Do not exceed vehicle, tongue or hitch weight ratings. Securely block the vehicle and set brakes before installation work.
Periodically clean dirt and debris from the ball and ball housing, and lubricate with white lithium grease or equivalent. If the hitch is damaged or involved in an accident, it must be replaced.
This indicates an obstruction or misalignment. In Step 11, after installing the fishwire assembly, check the rotation of the top collar. If the bed is rubbing against it or it cannot rotate freely, drop the center section and remove any obstructions. Once the obstruction is cleared and rotation is confirmed, fully tighten all hardware to the appropriate torque specifications.
Use a board while drilling to decrease the chances of the bit wobbling out of position. The manual specifically recommends this technique in Step 5. After drilling, deburr the hole so the hitch will sit tight against the bed.
Use silicone spray on the hangers to ease removal from the rubber insulators. This is noted in Step 2 of the installation instructions.
Ensure you are following the correct installation procedure: (1) Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. (2) Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. (3) Release the locking collar. (4) Pull up on the ball to ensure it is locked into the housing. If the ball still does not lock, the locking collar or latch pawl may be damaged.
