Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The Blue Ox Gooseneck Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch DH2201 (Part #FDRWDH2201) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The DH2201 is rated for a maximum Gross Towing Weight of 30,000 lbs and a Tongue Weight of 7,500 lbs. You must not exceed these ratings or your vehicle's manufacturer towing capacity, whichever is lower. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for your specific maximum towing capacity.
The DH2201 is designed for 2004–14 Ford F-150 trucks with Long, Short, or Standard Box configurations. The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to modify the hitch slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer tolerances.
Yes, but you must account for bed liner thickness when measuring the ball location. The manual specifies that the ball hole should be drilled 45-3/4" from the end of the bed (not the tailgate) and centered between the wheel wells. When a bed liner is installed, you must compensate for its thickness when taking this measurement to ensure the ball is positioned correctly.
You will need: a torque wrench, drill, tape measure, Loctite RED, 5-inch hole saw, 17/32-inch drill bit, 3/4-inch socket, and 3/4-inch wrench. You will also need the vehicle's jack handle tool to remove the spare tire.
The kit includes: 1 hitch ball (62-3822), 1 center section (62-3996), 2 side plates (PS and DS), 4 locking plates, 2 crossmember angles (rear and front), 4 carriage bolts (1/2"-13 x 2"), 12 hex head bolts (1/2"-13 x 1-1/2"), 2 U-bolts (1/2"-13 x 3-3/4" x 2-1/2"), 16 hex flange whiz lock nuts, 4 hex nylon lock nuts, 4 flat washers (1/2"), and 4 compression springs (0.049" diameter x 0.60" x 2"). All fasteners are Grade 5 zinc-plated unless otherwise noted.
Yes. The first step is to remove the spare tire using the vehicle's jack handle tool as described in your vehicle's owner's manual. This is necessary to access the bed for drilling the hitch ball hole.
The vehicle must be securely blocked and brakes set before beginning to work underneath it. Do not use any open flame under the truck bed to cut or weld—there is extreme danger of explosion or fire. Do not clamp the hitch over any wiring or brake lines. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Measure and mark a hole at 45-3/4" from the end of the bed (not the tailgate) and centered between the wheel wells. Drill a 5-inch hole through the bed at this location. If a bed liner is installed, you must compensate for the bed liner thickness when measuring. Using a board while drilling decreases chances of the bit wobbling out of position. It is also recommended to deburr the hole so the hitch will sit tight against the bed.
Use a 17/32-inch drill bit to drill the two holes through the bed that land in the bed valley. These holes are drilled on both sides of the vehicle and are used to install the U-bolts.
Yes. The installation requires drilling a 5-inch hole through the bed for the hitch ball, and two 17/32-inch holes through the bed in the bed valley for the U-bolts. The manual notes that some drilling and trimming is required.
1. Remove the spare tire. 2. Measure and drill the 5-inch ball hole at 45-3/4" from the bed end, centered between wheel wells. 3. Slide the rear crossmember across the top of the frame toward the rear of the bed hole (passenger side). 4. Slide the front crossmember across the top of the frame toward the front of the bed hole (passenger side). 5. Install the center section up through the 5-inch hole and between the crossmembers. 6. Secure the center section to the crossmembers with hardware (do not fully tighten). 7. Bolt the side plates to the crossmembers (do not fully tighten). 8. Install locking plates and carriage bolts through frame holes using fishwire. 9. Check rotation of the top collar to ensure the bed is not rubbing and it rotates freely. 10. Drill the two 17/32-inch holes in the bed valley and install U-bolts with washers, springs, and lock nuts. 11. Tighten all hardware to torque specifications.
Install the fishwire into the frame holes and out the inner frame access hole. Place the locking plate and carriage bolt onto the fishwire and pull back through the frame hole. Remove the fishwire and install the lock nut onto the bolt. Repeat for each frame hole. Note: On older models, the bump stop and clip nut must be removed for fishwire access.
Do not fully tighten the fasteners during the initial assembly steps. After securing the center section to the crossmembers (Step 6) and bolting the side plates to the crossmembers (Step 7), leave the hardware loose. Only after checking the rotation of the top collar to ensure the bed is not rubbing and it rotates freely (Step 9) should you tighten all hardware to the supplied torque specifications.
After drilling the two 17/32-inch holes through the bed in the bed valley (on both sides), insert the 1/2"-13 U-bolts through the holes from the topside. On each U-bolt stud, install a 1/2-inch flat washer, then a spring, then another 1/2-inch flat washer, and finally a 1/2"-13 lock nut. Tighten until the washers are touching the spring without compressing it.
Before tightening all hardware to torque specifications, check the rotation of the top collar to ensure the bed is not rubbing against it and that it can rotate freely. If necessary, drop the center section and remove any obstructions that are preventing free rotation.
For Grade 5 inch bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. For Grade 5 metric bolts: 6mm = 6 ft-lbs, 8mm = 16 ft-lbs, 10mm = 31 ft-lbs, 12mm = 54 ft-lbs, 14mm = 89 ft-lbs, 16mm = 161 ft-lbs, 18mm = 222 ft-lbs.
For Grade 8 inch bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 380 ft-lbs. For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6mm = 8 ft-lbs, 8mm = 22 ft-lbs, 10mm = 40 ft-lbs, 12mm = 70 ft-lbs, 14mm = 117 ft-lbs, 16mm = 230 ft-lbs, 18mm = 318 ft-lbs.
The DH2201 uses 1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts. According to the torque chart, Grade 5 1/2-inch bolts should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
Yes. The manual specifies that you must use Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening them. This is essential for maintaining the integrity of the installation.
1. Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. 2. Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. 3. Release the locking collar to secure the ball in place.
1. Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. 2. Pull straight up on the ball to remove it from the hitch.
1. Rotate the locking collar to release the latch pawl. 2. Align the ball with the collar and drop the ball into the hitch. 3. Release the locking collar. A plug is included with the hitch that can be used to cover the socket when the ball is removed.
The maximum Tongue Weight is 7,500 lbs. You must not exceed this rating or your vehicle's manufacturer tongue weight capacity, whichever is lower. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for your specific maximum tongue weight.
Yes. Trailer brakes are required. This is stated in the warnings section of the manual.
Always make sure the trailer is loaded slightly tongue-heavy. Do not pull a trailer that is lighter on the tongue end, as this can cause unsafe towing conditions.
If the hitch is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the hitch if it is damaged or missing parts.
When inverting the ball, ensure proper clearance between the ball and the truck's differential and driveline. Failure to do so may result in damage. The manual does not specify exact clearance dimensions; if you are unsure about clearance, contact Blue Ox customer service at (402) 385-3051.
Periodically clean any dirt and debris from the ball and ball housing. Moderately lubricate them with white lithium grease or equivalent grease. This regular maintenance will help ensure the hitch operates smoothly and has a long service life.
No. You must use only genuine factory replacement parts on your hitch. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
