Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

No. Most vehicle bumpers are NOT suitable for towing without modification and reinforcement. The baseplate must be attached metal to metal and to a flat surface. The bumper and bracket may need reinforcement. If you are not sure whether your bumper is suitable, consult a skilled hitch mechanic before purchasing.

Yes. Installation requires drilling four 17/32" holes in the bumper. The first two holes are drilled 10 9/16" to either side of the bumper center, then 21 1/8" to the opposite side. The outer bracket holes are marked using the bracket as a template and drilled afterward. If the bumper has a tube behind it, you must drill through both the bumper and tube.
All mounting holes are 17/32" in diameter. This applies to both the initial holes drilled in step 2 and the outer bracket holes marked and drilled in steps 4 and 5.
If the bumper has a tube behind it, you must drill through both the bumper and the tube. Use the longer bolts (1/2-13 X 6 1/2 Hex Head Bolts, part 201-0337) and backing braces (part 102-5461) provided in the kit instead of the standard bolts.
The tabs are not welded in the center of the baseplate and must be offset to the center of the bumper, as shown in the diagram. Ensure correct alignment before attaching the baseplate using the inside bracket holes and the bumper holes drilled in step 2.
1. Locate the bumper center and measure 10 9/16" to either side. From that mark, measure 21 1/8" to the opposite side. 2. Drill 17/32" holes at these points. 3. Attach the baseplate using the inside bracket holes and bumper holes, ensuring tabs are offset to the bumper center. 4. Mark 17/32" holes for the outer bracket holes using the bracket as a template. 5. Drill these outer holes. 6. Install brackets using all holes and hardware with Loctite on all bolts. 7. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.
The baseplate uses 1/2" Grade 5 bolts. According to the torque chart, 1/2" Grade 5 bolts must be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite to all bolts before tightening. If using an A-frame tow bar, check that it moves freely up and down before final tightening.
The kit includes: 2 Adapter Plates (61-4260), 4 1/2-13 X 2 Hex Head Bolts Grade 5 (201-0283), 4 1/2-13 Hex Nuts (202-0005), 4 1/2 Lock Washers (203-0012), 4 1/2-13 X 6 1/2 Hex Head Bolts Grade 5 (201-0337), 2 Backing Braces (102-5461), 4 1/2 Flat Washers (203-0005), and 1 Bolt Bag (63-3445).
Yes. You must use Loctite on all bolts before tightening. This is a required step in the installation process.
If using an A-frame tow bar, check that it moves freely up and down before final tightening of the bolts. This ensures proper operation of the tow bar.
