Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The 2012-2016 models have four bolts on the radiator cover (two on each side), while 2017-2019 models have seven bolts (three on each side). Additionally, 2019 models use a 7MM socket to remove two bolts from the belly pan area, whereas earlier models use Phillips screwdriver screws. RS models and vehicles with temperature sensors have additional specific steps. Refer to the model-year callouts in the installation instructions for your specific vehicle.
The attachment tab height is 13-1/2" and the attachment tab width is 18".

The fascia, steel fascia support, and part of the belly pan must be removed during installation and then reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. All removed items should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface. Some drilling and trimming of plastic components is also required.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill a 13/32" hole for the bottom mounting bolt on both sides of the vehicle, and drill two additional holes at the top of the side plates and one hole through the frame on both sides. A 1/4" drill bit is also used for the tail light wiring kit if that kit is installed. Be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills.
Trimming is required on non-turbo vehicles: trim the plastic shrouding on both sides using a utility knife. RS models require additional trimming: remove two push pins from the plastic shroud on both sides (shroud will not be reinstalled), trim off the lower plastic shrouding mount on both sides for baseplate clearance, and trim off the lower fog light housing bracket on both sides. A reciprocating saw is used to notch over 1" from the edge and upward to just slightly under the bumper on both sides. Be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw.
Yes, the modifications are permanent. Trimming of plastic shrouding, belly pan, and fog light housing brackets cannot be reversed. The reciprocating saw notch in the frame is also permanent. Paint cut frame edges with good quality paint to prevent rusting.
The manual provides a general torque chart for Grade 5 and Grade 8 inch bolts and Grade 8.8 and 10.9 metric bolts. For the 3/8"-16 bolts used in the baseplate mounting, Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to threads before tightening. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided. The specific torque values for individual fasteners in the assembly sequence are not explicitly detailed in the installation steps.
3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to threads before tightening.
The manual shows a 4-pin connector and 6-pin connector in the parts diagram, and references a breakaway switch and electrical bracket. The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended and requires drilling a hole according to the kit instructions. For vehicles with a temperature sensor on the passenger side fascia, the sensor must be removed from the fascia and attached to the baseplate using a zip tie. All electrical connections must be plugged in and verified as functioning before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Yes. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and are included with the kit (2 x class III safety cables and 2 x 3/8" quicklinks). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
The safety cables should be attached to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual recommends attaching them to a solid piece of the frame and shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Instructions. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Verify the baseplate is level before fully tightening fasteners. After installation, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended torque specifications with Loctite Red applied.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use (if applicable). Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
If the baseplate is involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor, or by calling the Customer Care Team at (402) 385-3051. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Blue Ox recommends installation by Blue Ox Dealers who have the equipment and knowledge for fit work. Find a dealer at www.blueox.com or call (402) 385-3051.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Check your vehicle owner's manual for towing specifications.
Inspect all bolts for tightness. Ensure all bolts have been torqued to the correct specifications: 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. Verify that Loctite Red was applied to all bolt threads before tightening. If bolts are loose, retighten them to the proper torque specification with Loctite Red applied.
Before fully tightening all fasteners, verify the baseplate is level. If the baseplate is not level after installation, loosen the fasteners, reposition the baseplate to ensure it is level, and then retighten all bolts to the proper torque specification with Loctite Red applied.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Verify that all connectors are fully seated. If a temperature sensor was removed from the fascia, ensure it has been properly attached to the baseplate using a zip tie. If connections still do not work, consult the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions if that kit was installed.
The safety cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Reposition the cables to ensure they are routed away from hoses, brake lines, and electrical wires. Secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Instructions. If the recommended mounting location causes interference, choose an alternative solid frame location that does not interfere with vehicle components.
