Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The fascia must be removed and reinstalled during installation. Some drilling and trimming is required. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface for reinstallation after baseplate installation. Note that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and the baseplate may need slight tailoring to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. A hole must be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Two drilling operations are required: (1) A hole must be drilled according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions. (2) Three holes must be drilled on each side of the vehicle using a 3/8" drill bit for the side plate bolts. Additionally, the middle hole on the shutter piece may need to be drilled out with a 1/4" drill bit. Be careful not to hit any wires while drilling.
Trimming is required in three areas: (1) Using a utility knife, trim the indicated areas on each side of the grill to allow room for the baseplate. (2) Remove the plastic piece from the back side of the fascia by releasing four clips. (3) Using a utility knife, remove the plastic piece as indicated on both sides of the vehicle. (4) After baseplate installation, hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs.
Yes. The trimming of the grill areas, removal of the plastic piece from the fascia, and removal of the foam piece are permanent modifications. The bumper is removed and replaced by the baseplate and will not be reinstalled. However, the fascia is reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Use the torque chart provided in the manual. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs. For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The attachment tabs are 19" in height and 24" in width.
1. Using a 7MM socket, remove four bolts from the top of the fascia cover. 2. Using a T15 Torx, remove two screws from the edge of the wheel well in front of the tire on each side, pull the cover back, and remove one bolt from under the cover using a 7MM socket. 3. Using a 7MM socket, remove six bolts (white) from the underside and one push pin (gray) from the center. 4. Pull the plastic piece down and remove one bolt using a 7MM socket. 5. Pull the corners of the fascia away from the vehicle, disconnect electrical connections, and set the fascia aside.
Removal: Using a 10MM socket, remove three bolts holding the support brackets, then remove and set aside the brackets for later reinstallation. Reinstallation: After the baseplate is installed, place the bottom of the three front support brackets into slots on the baseplate and reinstall the existing bolts at the top. Apply Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten to the appropriate torque.
Using a 13MM socket, remove four bolts from the bumper on both sides of the vehicle. Unsnap the wire loom from the bumper and remove the bumper. The bumper will not be reinstalled; it is replaced by the baseplate.
Removal: Using a 7MM socket, remove three bolts from the shutter housing and let it hang loose. Reinstallation: After the baseplate is in place, lift the shutter housing back into place and attach it to the baseplate using three 1/4" bolts with flat washer and nylon lock nut. Note that the middle hole may need to be drilled out with a 1/4" drill bit on the shutter piece. Apply Loctite Red and tighten to the appropriate torque.
Slide the baseplate into place and start eight 8MM bolts (four on each side) with flat washer and lock washer. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten fully to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart (8MM Grade 8.8 = 16 ft-lbs).
Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill out three holes on each side for the side plate. Be careful not to hit any wires while drilling. Insert three 3/8" bolts with lock washer and 3/8" whiz nut with wire on each side. Apply Loctite Red and tighten to the appropriate torque (3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs).
Failure to read and follow these instructions could result in separation of the towed vehicle from the tow bar, causing property damage, loss of towed vehicle, personal injury or death. If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again, as an accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle. These cables are supplementary to and not a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs. Then reinstall the fascia and fascia cover. Ensure all electrical connections are functioning properly. It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip.
