Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

Yes. The metal bumper must be removed for installation. Using an 18MM socket, remove two metric bolts from the back of the metal bumper on both sides of the vehicle, then pull the bumper forward to remove it. Set the bolts and bumper aside for reinstallation after baseplate installation is complete.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two holes into the bottom of the frame rail using a 17/32" drill bit. A smaller pilot drill bit may be used to start the holes first. The baseplate is used as a template to mark the drilling locations.
Using a hack saw blade, cut 3/8" off the plastic radiator shield on both sides of the vehicle, getting as close to the flat washer as possible. Additionally, you must cut out an area approximately 1-1/2" in width and depth from the air dam on both sides to accommodate the baseplate.
1. Remove metal bumper using 18MM socket. 2. Cut 3/8" from plastic radiator shield with hack saw blade on both sides. 3. Mark and cut out approximately 1-1/2" area from air dam on both sides, snap lower push pin in place. 4. Align baseplate to existing holes on frame rail, clamp with vise grips on both sides. 5. Insert 1/2"-13 nut plates through frame end holes, install bolts with washers, tighten on both sides. 6. Drill two remaining holes using 17/32" drill bit, insert whiz nuts, install bolts with washers, tighten on both sides. 7. Reinstall metal bumper and bolts. 8. Attach permanent baseplate safety cables to frame. 9-12. If vehicle has front-mount license plate, relocate license plate or electrical connector as needed.
Align the baseplate to the existing holes on the bottom and inside of the frame rail. Using vise grips, clamp the baseplate into place on both sides of the vehicle. This holds the baseplate in the correct position while you drill the remaining holes.
The baseplate uses 1/2"-13 nut plates and 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" hex bolts with 1/2" flat washers and 1/2" lock washers. Four bolts total are installed: two in existing holes (one with a plate washer in the top hole) and two in newly drilled holes. All bolts must be treated with Loctite RED before tightening.

Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link (3/8" quick link) on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame of the vehicle. The manual recommends specific mounting locations shown in the installation photos. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle. These cables are strongly recommended and must be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
If your vehicle has a front-mount license plate, you have two options: (1) Move the license plate front mount by removing two push pins from the top opening, turning the fascia face down, lifting off the license bracket, cutting off the single tube in the middle with a hack saw blade, turning the bracket upside down, and reattaching it using 1-3/8" self-tapping screws with the bottom holes used for the license plate; or (2) Relocate the electrical connector by drilling a 1" hole through the bottom of the fascia, inserting the electrical connector, drilling two 9/32" holes into the fascia using the connector as a template, and installing 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex bolts with 1/4" flat washers, lock washers and hex nuts.
Apply Loctite RED to all bolts before tightening. This is required for all bolts used in the baseplate installation.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. A smaller pilot drill bit may be used to start holes before using the 17/32" drill bit to reduce these risks.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not used again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged baseplate could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Ensure all bolts are treated with Loctite Red and tightened to the recommended specifications.
