Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2639 is a towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox designed specifically for 2013–18 Ford C-Max vehicles, including Hybrid and Energi models. It attaches to the vehicle frame to enable towing with a tow bar. The baseplate has an attachment tab height of 12 inches and width of 20 inches.
The BX2639 is designed for 2013–18 Ford C-Max vehicles, including Hybrid and Energi models. However, if the front of your vehicle looks different from the images in the manual, contact Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
Yes, the BX2639 fits 2017 Ford C-Max models. However, for 2017 models, the tail light hole should be drilled into the top of the taillight housing because the brake light and turn signal positions have swapped compared to earlier model years.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 13/32" drill bit, 1-1/4" hole saw, T27 Torx, 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 7/16" socket, 7/16" wrench, 9/16" socket, and 9/16" wrench. Loctite Red is also required for all bolt threads.
The kit includes: 6 nut plates with 14" wire (3/8"-16), 2 attachment tab assemblies with holes, 1 breakaway bracket, 1 attachment plate (1/8"), 3 bolts (1/4"-20 x 3/4", Grade 5), 2 slot round head screws (#10-32 x 1/2"), 6 bolts (3/8"-16 x 1-1/2", Grade 5), 1 bolt (3/8"-16 x 1", Grade 5), 2 self-drilling screws (#12-14 x 1"), 1 self-drilling screw (#10-16 x 1"), 2 hex nuts (#10-32), 1 hex nylon lock nut (3/8"-16), 3 hex nylon nuts (1/4"-20), 1 flat washer (3/8"), 6 lock washers (3/8"), 2 lock washers (#10), 1 electrical bracket, 2 class III safety cables, 2 quicklinks (3/8"), and 2 receiver cap plugs.
A tail light wiring kit is recommended for this vehicle. Use the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit for standard lights or the BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit for vehicles with LED lights. You will need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051. The installation involves removal and reinstallation of multiple components, drilling, trimming, and precise torque specifications.
The following components must be removed: fascia (front bumper cover), headlights (both sides), horn assembly, air box (driver side), and washer fluid reservoir (passenger side; Hybrid models only). All items are reinstalled after baseplate installation unless otherwise noted. Place removed components on a flat, sturdy surface.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected before installation. Contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for guidance on this safety precaution.
Yes, drilling is required. You must use a 1-1/4" hole saw to drill existing holes behind the headlights on both sides of the vehicle for access to install the baseplate nut plates. Additionally, a 13/32" drill bit is listed as a required tool. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Trimming is required in three areas: (1) the shutter must be trimmed on both ends to clear the baseplate, with dimensions roughly 1-1/2" from the bottom and 3-1/4" to the top of the cut; (2) the plastic flange above the baseplate on the passenger side must be trimmed for clearance of the washer fluid reservoir; (3) the fascia must be marked and trimmed as needed to clear the baseplate before reinstallation. Use a utility knife for trimming. Paint cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
Yes, two metal parts must be bent: (1) on the driver side, bend the air box metal tab away from the vehicle for baseplate clearance, then bend it back to its original position after the baseplate is installed; (2) on the passenger side, the horn bracket may need to be bent to ensure the horn drains if exposed to water.
Yes, the trimming of the shutter, plastic flange, and fascia are permanent modifications to the vehicle. The bending of the air box metal tab and horn bracket are also permanent adjustments. These modifications cannot be reversed without replacing the affected components.
The manual provides general torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts by size in foot-pounds. For example: 1/4" Grade 5 bolts = 10 ft-lbs, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts = 33 ft-lbs, 1/2" Grade 5 bolts = 78 ft-lbs. Most bolts in the BX2639 kit are Grade 5. However, the manual does not specify the exact torque for each individual bolt used in this installation. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. For specific torque values for each bolt in your installation, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
The BX2639 attachment tab height is 12 inches and the attachment tab width is 20 inches.
The manual states that the baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR and that exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. However, the manual does not specify the exact GVWR rating. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications and contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the specific GVWR rating of the BX2639.
The manual recommends using a tail light wiring kit (BX8869 for standard lights or BX8848 for LED lights) to connect the towed vehicle's lights to the towing vehicle. You must drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions. The manual also includes an electrical bracket (part 299-0685) in the kit. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The safety cables should be attached to the provided convenience link on the baseplate and then secured to a solid piece of the vehicle frame, such as the frame rail or cross member. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The manual shows recommended installation options in illustrations; if additional options may interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet. Install the cables on both sides of the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications to determine the appropriate weight limit.
After installation, ensure that: (1) all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia; (2) the baseplate is level before tightening down fasteners; (3) all bolts are tightened to the appropriate torque specifications using Loctite Red; (4) the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts; (5) the horn drains properly if exposed to water; (6) all removed components (fascia, headlights, horn, washer fluid reservoir, air box) are properly reinstalled and secured.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rusting. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
The manual does not specify a retorque interval. However, it states that it is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for loose bolts before each towing trip and to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for guidance on retorque intervals.
Yes, the BX2639 is designed for 2013–18 Ford C-Max vehicles, including Hybrid and Energi models. If your vehicle's front looks different from the manual images, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before installing.
You need a torque wrench, drill with 13/32" and 1-1/4" bits, T27 Torx, 8MM and 10MM sockets, 7/16" and 9/16" sockets and wrenches, vise grip, screwdrivers, utility knife, tape measure, and Loctite Red.
Yes. You must drill a 1-1/4" hole behind each headlight and trim the shutter (1-1/2" from bottom, 3-1/4" to top), plastic flange, and fascia. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rust.
Blue Ox recommends installation by Blue Ox Dealers who have the equipment and fit-work knowledge. The installation involves removing and reinstalling fascia, headlights, horn, and washer fluid reservoir, plus drilling and trimming. Find a dealer at www.blueox.com or call (402) 385-3051.
Use Loctite Red on all bolts. The manual provides torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts by size (e.g., 3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs), but does not specify exact torque for each bolt in this kit. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for specific torque values.
The baseplate is tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for towing specifications.
Yes, a tail light wiring kit is recommended: BX8869 for standard lights or BX8848 for LED lights. You will drill a hole according to the kit instructions.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the baseplate connection fails. They must be used with, not instead of, legally required safety cables. Do not mount them against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
The manual states to ensure the baseplate is level before tightening down fasteners. If the baseplate is not level, loosen the fasteners, reposition the baseplate to level, and then retighten. The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, so slight adjustments may be necessary to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances.
The manual states to ream out the holes if necessary for bolt clearance. Use the existing holes in the frame to bolt the baseplate to the vehicle. If the holes do not align, carefully enlarge them with a drill to accommodate the bolts.
Bend the horn bracket as needed to ensure that the horn drains if exposed to water. This prevents water accumulation in the horn assembly.
Mark and trim the fascia as needed to clear the baseplate before reinstalling it to the vehicle. The fascia may require trimming at multiple points to fit properly around the installed baseplate.
Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. Check that the headlights are properly plugged in after reinstallation, and verify that any tail light wiring kit connections are secure. If problems persist, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
