Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Yes. The front fascia and fascia cover must be removed and reinstalled during baseplate installation. For 2018-2024 models, this involves removing push pins, unsnapping the fascia cover, removing bolts from the top and wheel well, pulling back the liner, removing underside bolts, and unplugging electrical connections. For 2025-2026 models, the process is similar but involves different bolt counts and locations. All removed items are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Yes. The installation requires drilling two holes on each side of the vehicle using a 1/2" drill bit. These holes are drilled using the baseplate as a guide and are used to mount the baseplate to the frame. Additionally, the fascia must be trimmed to allow room for the attachment tab and convenience link.
For 2018-2024 models, a 5-1/2" wide by 2-1/4" tall rectangle must be removed from the fascia, starting 3/4" from the lip at the bottom of the fascia and 1/4" from the bumper. This must be done on both sides of the vehicle. For 2025-2026 models, the tow hook cover is trimmed using a reciprocating saw according to indicated measurements shown in the manual, and the covers are then reinstalled onto the fascia.
Yes. The drilling of holes in the vehicle frame and the trimming of the fascia are permanent modifications. The manual recommends using good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. These modifications cannot be reversed without professional repair.
For Grade 5 inch bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. The BX2682 kit primarily uses 1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts, which should be torqued to 78 ft-lbs. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to threads before tightening.
For Grade 8 inch bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 380 ft-lbs. If Grade 8 bolts are used as replacements, apply Loctite Red to all threads before tightening to the appropriate torque value.
For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs, 16MM = 230 ft-lbs, 18MM = 318 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all threads before tightening.
1. Slide the baseplate into place and hold. Start the first bottom 1/2" bolt with flat washer and whiz nut on the backside on both sides of the vehicle. Do not use Loctite Red at this time. 2. Make sure the baseplate is tight against the frame and insert the back two 1/2" bolts with flat washers and whiz nuts on the backside. Use Loctite Red on these bolts. 3. Once the back bolts are in place, remove the front bolt, apply Loctite Red, and reinstall. 4. Using the baseplate as a guide, drill two holes using a 1/2" drill bit and insert two 1/2" bolts with whiz nuts on the backside. 5. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to 78 ft-lbs (for Grade 5).
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame of the vehicle, such as a frame rail or crossmember. The manual shows two recommended options: one for baseplates with convenience link tabs and one for baseplates without. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Only if your vehicle has tow hooks. If present, remove the two bolts from the tow hooks on both sides of the vehicle using a 15MM socket before sliding the baseplate into place.
On the driver side of the vehicle, unplug the indicated electrical connections before removing the front fascia. For 2018-2024 models only, on the passenger side near the headlight, unhook the fluid line by squeezing and pulling apart. These connections must be reconnected after the baseplate is installed and before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and your vehicle's GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and cannot be reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. Wear appropriate protective equipment when handling cosmetic parts, as they may require protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. For 2018-2024 models, reconnect the fluid line on the passenger side and electrical connections on the driver side. For 2025-2026 models, reconnect electrical connections on the driver side. Verify that all bolts have been tightened to the correct torque specifications with Loctite Red applied.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Ensure that Loctite Red is used on all bolts and that they are tightened to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use if applicable. No. Even though bolts may exist on the vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions.
