Blue Ox base plates are custom designed for each specific towed vehicle. When you purchase a Blue Ox base plate, it includes all the necessary hardware and instructions for a do-it-yourself installation.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The BX1744 is designed for 2021-2023 Chevy Trailblazer models including those with ACC, Turbo, and Top Shutters. However, the manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer tolerances. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
The attachment tab height is 13.5 inches and the attachment tab width is 24 inches.
Blue Ox recommends that towing products be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Technical Service Department at (402) 385-3051. While the manual does not explicitly prohibit non-dealer installation, professional installation is strongly recommended.
Yes. Both the fascia and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed during baseplate installation and then reinstalled after the baseplate is installed. The manual notes that handling of cosmetic parts may require protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage.
Yes. Drilling is required. Step 9 specifies using a 1/2" drill bit to drill out the top hole on the passenger side of the vehicle. Additionally, Step 7 requires cutting the shroud below the bumper in an indicated area. The manual also notes that some trimming is required, specifically trimming the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs in Step 19.
A 1/2" drill bit is required. It is used in Step 9 to drill out the top hole on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Required tools are: flat screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, 1/2" drill bit, 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 10MM wrench, 13MM socket, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, T15 Torx (for fascia bolts), 15MM socket (for bumper bolts), and Loctite Red. A reciprocating saw is needed for cutting the shroud, though not explicitly listed in the tools section.
Yes. Loctite Red is required. The manual states: "Be sure to use a sufficient amount of Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening." This is emphasized multiple times in the installation steps, particularly in Steps 13 and 15.
The manual provides a torque chart for metric and inch bolts. For the bolts used in this installation: 10MM Grade 5 bolts = 31 ft-lbs, 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts = 33 ft-lbs, and 1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts = 78 ft-lbs. The manual states to tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided unless otherwise specified. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the threads.
Eight existing 10MM x 1.5 x 40MM bolts are used: four on each side of the vehicle. These are factory bolts that are reused. Step 12 specifies starting one bolt on each side to hold the baseplate in place, then Step 13 installs the remaining three bolts on each side. All eight bolts must be treated with Loctite Red and tightened to the appropriate torque specification.
1. Slide the baseplate between the bumper and frame. 2. Start one existing bolt on each side to hold it in place (Step 12). 3. Install the remaining three existing 10MM bolts on each side (Step 13). 4. Remove the starter bolt from each side, apply Loctite Red, and reinstall (Step 13). 5. Attach support plates to the baseplate using 3/8" x 1-1/4" bolts with hardware on both sides (Step 14). 6. Attach support plates to the frame using 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts with wire nuts on both sides, with a washer on the bottom bolt on the passenger side only (Step 15). All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red and tightened to torque specifications.
Two 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head bolts (Grade 5, zinc plated) with 3/8"-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts and 7/16" flat washers are used on each side of the vehicle. This is done on both sides. All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red and tightened to 33 ft-lbs (the torque specification for 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts).
Two 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts (Grade 5) with 1/2" lock washers and whiz nuts with 10" wire are used on each side of the vehicle. On the passenger side only, a flat washer must be inserted between the frame and baseplate on the bottom 1/2" bolt. All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red and tightened to 78 ft-lbs (the torque specification for 1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts).
In Step 11, electrical connections on the passenger side must be unplugged and allowed to hang. In Step 16, these electrical connections are reconnected through the hole in the support plate. The manual emphasizes that all electrical connections must be plugged in and accessories must be functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. The BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for RS trim only; smart diodes or a light bar are recommended for all other trims.
Yes. The BX1744 includes two Class IV safety cables (part number 226-0049) and two 1/2" quicklinks (part number 229-0512). These permanent baseplate safety cables must be attached from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Safety cables are strongly recommended and should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. The manual also states that it is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The manual recommends using a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use if applicable.
No. The manual explicitly states: "Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts." If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow this requirement will void the manufacturer's warranty.

The baseplate must be replaced. Do not reuse it, as accidents can cause unseen damage that could result in more damage or serious injury.
Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing parts, and loose bolts. Tighten all bolts with Loctite Red to specification. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rust. Keep safety cables installed and check they don't rub hoses.
Verify that all electrical connections are properly plugged in. In Step 16, electrical connections on the passenger side are reconnected through the hole in the support plate. Before reinstalling the fascia, test all accessories to ensure they are functioning properly. If connections appear loose or disconnected, reseat them firmly. If problems persist, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer tolerances. However, if the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, or if the baseplate does not fit properly, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding. Do not force the baseplate into position.
Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. If bolts are loose, tighten them to the appropriate torque specification using Loctite Red on all bolt threads. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. If the baseplate has been in an accident, it must be replaced and should not be reused, as accidents can cause unseen damage.
Reposition the safety cables immediately. The manual explicitly states: "Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts." If cables are improperly installed and rub against wires or hoses, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Refer to the two recommended installation options shown in the Permanent Baseplate Safety Cable Installation section, or secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
