Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1604 baseplate is designed for 1982-84 Chevrolet S10 Pickup in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. It also fits 1982-84 Chevrolet S10 Blazer (2WD/4WD) and 1982-84 GMC S15 Pickup/Jimmy (2WD/4WD). Installation requires removing the plastic belly pan, air dam, and vehicle tow hooks, and slotting the front air dam.
Yes, the BX1604 is compatible with both 2WD and 4WD 1982-84 Chevrolet S10 Pickups, as well as 2WD and 4WD S10 Blazers and GMC S15 Pickup/Jimmy models.
Yes. The vehicle's factory tow hooks must be removed as they interfere with the baseplate. On some models, slots are already cut in the air dam to accommodate these hooks; these hooks must be removed before installation.
You must remove the plastic belly pan (held on with six bolts), the air dam, and the vehicle's tow hooks. The belly pan removal is necessary on some models to access the mounting bolts. The air dam must be removed to slot it properly, though the cut-out is easier to make neatly with the air dam removed.
Yes. The front air dam must be slotted on each side to allow the baseplate pickup tabs to protrude forward. The size and shape of the slots is outlined by a ridge molded into the back of the air dam immediately in front of the chassis frame rails. On some models these slots are already cut out to accommodate tow hooks. The manual recommends removing the air dam to make the cut-out neatly.
No. The BX1604 utilizes the ten existing mounting bolts (five on each side) that attach the bumper to the chassis. These bolts are horizontal relative to the ground and perpendicular to the front-to-back axis of the vehicle. However, the manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable, and it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
The required tools are: 3/4 socket, 10mm socket, 15mm socket, and pliers. The manual does not specify which socket size is used for which bolts.
The kit includes one Main Baseplate Assembly (part number 61-3434). The manual states you should also receive a General Instruction Sheet and instructions for the tow bar and safety cables, which are sold separately.
An assistant is required. The installation procedure requires one person to hold the bumper while the other slides the baseplate into position and starts the bolts.
The baseplate tabs should face forward and up during installation.
Apply Loctite to the bolts, then tighten the six inner bolts first, followed by the four outer bolts.
The manual does not provide specific torque values for the mounting bolts. It states that bolts should be tightened to recommended specifications and that Loctite Red should be used, but the actual torque values are not listed in this document.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. However, these cables are supplementary to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. They must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
It is the installer's responsibility to watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed and comes into contact with a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts sometime after installation.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
Yes. Blue Ox strongly recommends registering your product online at www.blueox.com. Registration is crucial so you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Yes, the attachment tabs can be removed when not in use, if applicable to your model.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. You should contact the manufacturer or your installer for replacement parts.
