Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The BX1939 is compatible with 1998–2003 Durango models in both 2WD and 4WD configurations, including those equipped with the V-8 Magnum engine.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5280), driver's and passenger's side plates (101-5826 and 101-5827), two brace supports (102-5663), ten 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0051), ten 1/2 lock washers (203-0012), ten 1/2 flat washers (203-0005), ten 1/2-13 hex nuts (202-0005), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two 4-way electrical adapters (101-5822), two #10-32 x 1/2 slot screws (201-0192), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two 36" Class IV baseplate safety cables (226-0049), and four 1/2" quicklinks (229-0512).
You will need: 18mm wrench, 18mm socket, 3/4" socket, Loctite Red, utility knife, and flat screwdriver.
Yes. You must remove the plastic rock guard by unclipping the plastic pine tree clips, then remove the bumper bracket bolts (two on the outside of the frame on each side using an 18mm wrench, and four bolts accessed from inside the hood using an 18mm wrench). The main bumper is then pulled off and set aside. After baseplate installation, the bumper and rock guard are reinstalled.
Yes. Half-inch holes must be drilled to install the baseplate. The manual notes that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to drill a hole out slightly to allow a bolt to clear, as models may vary. However, the manual does not provide a drilling diagram or specify exact hole locations.
Two trimming tasks are required: (1) the back side of the plastic fascia must be trimmed for the cross tube of the main weldment, and (2) the three vertical grill pieces must be trimmed from the back side to allow for the tube of the main weldment, approximately 1/2 inch off each one. A utility knife is the recommended tool.
1. Remove plastic rock guard by unclipping pine tree clips. 2. Remove bumper bracket bolts from outside frame (two per side, 18mm wrench) and from inside hood (four bolts, 18mm wrench). Remove main bumper. 3. Remove nuts from inner bumper brackets, place driver's and passenger's side plates over bolts with Loctite, and reinstall nuts. 4. Bolt main weldment to side plates using 1/2" bolts, washers and nuts with Loctite, torqued per General Instruction Sheet. 5. Trim three vertical grill pieces approximately 1/2 inch from back side. 6. Replace bumper and rock guard. 7. Install tow bar and safety cables per their separate instructions.
The manual specifies that 1/2" bolts must be torqued according to the torque chart in the General Instruction Sheet, which is not included in this installation manual. Contact Blue Ox or consult the General Instruction Sheet for the specific torque value.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. Two 36" Class IV cables (226-0049) are included in the kit. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red. Hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Replacement pins and clips must be obtained from the tow bar manufacturer or Blue Ox.
Yes. Blue Ox strongly recommends registering your baseplate online at www.blueox.com. Registration ensures you are alerted to product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
