Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX1851 baseplate is designed for 2011-2017 Nissan Juke S/SV/SL models and 2013-2017 Nissan Juke Nismo models. The attachment tab height is 16 inches and width is 19 inches. The kit includes the BX1851 baseplate (61-7343), DS and PS support plates, two attachment tab assemblies, breakaway bracket, safety cables, quicklinks, cap plug receivers, and comprehensive hardware: 1/2"-13 whiz nuts with wire, 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" bolts, 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" bolts, self-drilling screws, hex nuts, lock washers, flat washers, and an electrical bracket. See the parts list on page 3 for complete details and part numbers.
Required tools include: torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, hammer, and the following sockets and wrenches: 10MM socket, 17MM socket, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" socket, and 3/4" wrench. You will also need drill bits (13/32", 1/2") and a 1-1/4" hole saw. Loctite Red is required for all bolt threads.
Blue Ox recommends that baseplates be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. The installation involves removal of multiple components, drilling, trimming, and cutting, which requires skill and proper tools.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two access holes using a 1-1/4" hole saw behind the flange on both sides of the vehicle (step 13). You must also drill three support plate holes through the frame on each side using a 13/32" drill bit (step 16). Additionally, you must ream out two existing top holes using a 1/2" drill bit for bolt clearance (step 13). The manual notes that when using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Trimming and cutting required includes: (1) trim the lower section of the shrouding flush with the bottom of the bumper on both driver and passenger sides (steps 8-9); (2) cut two slits into the frame webbing and bend the section forward flat against the frame on both sides (step 10); (3) trim the webbing lip under the bolt on the driver side only (step 10); (4) trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs (step 19). A reciprocating saw is required. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Yes. In step 12, you must use a hammer to flatten the ridge behind the frame webbing on both sides of the vehicle. This is done after removing the two lower frame bolts and before drilling the access holes.
Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is noted as a notice in the installation instructions to protect the frame from corrosion after cutting and trimming operations.
For 1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 78 foot-pounds. For 1/2"-13 Grade 8 bolts, the torque specification is 119 foot-pounds. The BX1851 uses 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" Grade 5 bolts. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
For 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For 3/8"-16 Grade 8 bolts, the torque specification is 47 foot-pounds. The BX1851 uses 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" Grade 5 bolts for the support plates. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
For 1/4"-20 Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 10 foot-pounds. For 1/4"-20 Grade 8 bolts, the torque specification is 14 foot-pounds. The BX1851 includes one 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 bolt. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for the BX1851 on the Nissan Juke. The manual notes that you must drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and your vehicle's GVWR before towing.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The BX1851 kit includes Class III Safety Cables (part 226-0046) and 3/8" Quicklinks (part 229-0359). The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts, and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Check that the baseplate is level. Verify that the support plates are level with the top of the frame. Ensure that the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Confirm that all bolts have been tightened to the appropriate torque specifications with Loctite Red applied to all threads.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable). No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Warranty coverage requires the customer warranty card to be returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice. The warranty does not cover improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint or rust.
