Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX3304 baseplate is designed specifically for 1995-96 Saturn SC2 models. The baseplate mounts behind the air dam in the lower part of the front bumper, attaching to the upper frame just below the headlights and to the lower sub-frame just behind the sway bar mounts.
The manual specifies the BX3304 is for 1995-96 Saturn SC2 only. Compatibility with other model years is not addressed in the manual.
The manual states that utilization of Blue Ox baseplates with any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company invalidates the limited warranty. You must use only tow bars approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company. Consult the manufacturer or your dealer for a list of approved tow bars.
To allow for installation of the baseplate, the headlights, belly pan, shroud, and bumper insert must be removed from the car. The headlights require removal of the first three or four bolts holding the top of the fenders to access one headlight mount bolt on each side; the other mount bolts are accessible from the top.
Remove the plastic belly pan by removing four plastic push pins with a flat screwdriver; two are located in front and two in the back. The belly pan holds the vertical air dam with four springs.
With a 10mm socket, remove the three nuts from the top of the bumper insert piece (one in the center and one on each end). Remove the plastic vertical shroud at the same time by removing two bolts in the bottom of the shroud with the 10mm socket. Open the hood and remove the two plastic push pins at the top of the shroud; it should come straight down.
The fabricated sheet metal rectangular tubular assemblies that come forward on each side below the headlight mount areas serve as the attachment points for the silver colored internal aluminum bumper channel. The left and right frame mount brackets will be attached to these tubes during installation.
The plastic push pin at the upper front of the splash guard (located under the front fenders) must be removed and the tab moved out of the way. The hole where this pin was located will be used for the bottom bolt on the frame mounts. It may also be helpful to remove the screw in the bottom of the splash guard on the bumper.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two holes in the top of each frame mount using 13/32" and 17/32" drill bits. Additionally, a 17/32" hole must be drilled for the bottom bolt on each frame mount. The holes are marked using 13/32" and 17/32" transfer punches to ensure proper alignment with the frame tubes.
The vertical pieces at each end of the shroud require a small notch approximately 1 1/2" by 1 1/2" to be trimmed out of the front about halfway up. This allows the baseplate tube to come through. The shroud must be removed before trimming and reinstalled after.
The ends of the vertical flat pieces on the bumper insert must be trimmed off to allow access for the baseplate tube. Additionally, the bottom of the insert must be notched out to accommodate the bottom support pieces of the baseplate. Mark the piece upside down to determine where the notches should be cut.
Two slots must be cut in the air dam to allow the rear mounting brackets extending down from the baseplate main tube to come through. Each slot should be approximately 1/2" high and 2" long. Mark the air dam just below each of the brackets from the main cross tube, then remove the air dam and cut the slots with a utility knife.
Required tools are: 10mm socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, 15/16" socket, 17/32" transfer punch, 13/32" transfer punch, 17/32" drill bit, 13/32" drill bit, flat screwdriver, Loctite Blue, and utility knife.
The baseplate package includes 16 bolts and all required fasteners: four 1/2-13 x 1 3/4" hex bolts (Grade 5), eight 1/2-13 x 1 1/2" hex bolts (Grade 5), two 5/8-11 x 1 3/4" hex bolts (Grade 5), two 3/8-16 x 1" hex bolts (Grade 5), four 1/2-13 hex nuts, two 3/8-16 hex nuts, twelve 1/2" lock washers, four 5/8" flat washers, two 5/8" lock washers, and two 3/8" lock washers. Four 1/2 nut wires and two 5/8 nut wires are also included.
The frame mount brackets (different for driver and passenger sides) are held over the frame tube and aligned with the bottom hole from the removed splash guard push pin. Two top holes are marked using 13/32" and 17/32" transfer punches, then drilled with matching drill bits. A 1/2 nut wire is bent and inserted through the large opening on the outside of the frame tube so the flange side lies over the inside of the drilled holes. On the driver's side, two 1/2 x 1 1/2" hex bolts are inserted in the vertical holes pointing forward before the mount is attached (because the air conditioner hose prevents installation after). A 1/2 lock washer and 1/2 x 1 1/2" hex bolt with Loctite are started into the whiz nut, and a 3/8 x 1" hex bolt with 3/8 lock washer and nut (also with Loctite) are started through the outside hole. Both bolts are then fully tightened. The process is repeated for the passenger side.
Using the frame mount as a template, drill out the bottom hole with a 17/32" bit. Bend a 1/2 nut wire and insert it through the same opening as the top bolts. Apply Loctite to the threads of a 1/2 x 1 1/2" bolt and start it, along with a 1/2 lock washer, into the whiz nut, then fully tighten.
Hold the baseplate into position in front of the radiator and start the four 1/2 x 1 1/2" bolts through the vertical holes on the frame mounts and into the mounting plates on the baseplate. The attachment tabs should point forward and protrude out of the horizontal opening in the fender. Start a 1/2 nut on the two bottom bolts to hold the baseplate in place. Do not fully tighten at this stage; the shroud and bumper insert must be trimmed and reinstalled first.
Loctite Blue must be applied to the threads of all bolts before installation. This includes the 1/2 x 1 1/2" bolts on the frame mounts, the 3/8 x 1" bolts on the frame mounts, the 1/2 x 1 1/2" bolts securing the baseplate to the frame mounts, the 5/8 x 1 3/4" bolts on the rear mounts, and the 1/2 x 1 3/4" bolts on the rear mounts.
The rear mounts attach to the lower brackets on the baseplate cross tube and to the bottom of the frame just behind the sway bar mounts. Just behind each sway bar mount is a 5/8" diameter hole; a larger hole behind it provides access for the 5/8 nut wire. Fish the nut wire into the frame and align the nut over the hole with the flange side against the frame. Slide the front end of the rear mount through the air dam until the rear hole in the mount aligns with the hole in the frame. Start a 5/8 x 1 3/4" bolt through the rear mount into the frame with two 5/8" flat washers between the frame and rear mount (to clear the sway bar mount), a 5/8" lock washer on the bolt head, and Loctite on the threads. Do not tighten yet. Then apply Loctite and start four 1/2 x 1 3/4" bolts and lock washers through the front holes in the rear mount into the brackets on the baseplate cross tube. When all bolts are started, tighten completely.
After all bolts are started, tighten the 5/8" bolts on the rear mounts as well as the 1/2" bolts started in Step 17 (the four bolts securing the baseplate to the frame mounts). The rear mount bolts are tightened after the front bolts are fully tightened.
After trimming the shroud and bumper insert, remove the baseplate and reinstall the shroud and bumper insert. Replace all plastic push pins and fully tighten all nuts and bolts at this time. Then remount the baseplate by starting the four 1/2 x 1 1/2" bolts with Loctite on the threads and a 1/2 lock washer and nut on each bolt (do not tighten at this stage). Next, remove the air dam from the plastic belly pan by unsnapping the four springs, replace the belly pan with the four plastic push pins, and mount the air dam to the belly pan with the springs after cutting the required slots.
Reinstall the headlight assemblies after all baseplate bolts are tightened and the shroud and bumper insert are in place.
Dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the location and size of the holes in the baseplate were designed to allow for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Contact the manufacturer or your dealer for replacement parts.
The manual references a General Instruction Sheet that should be read before beginning installation, but the contents of that sheet are not detailed in this document. The dealer or installer must ensure the user receives this instruction sheet.
The BX3304 is designed for 1995-96 Saturn SC2 models only. Compatibility with other vehicles is not supported.

Yes. You must drill two holes in each frame mount using 13/32" and 17/32" drill bits, and a 17/32" hole for the bottom bolt on each mount. Trimming of the shroud, bumper insert, and air dam is also required.
The manual does not mention any electrical connections or wiring for the BX3304 baseplate.
The BX3304 has a limited warranty. The warranty is invalidated if the baseplate is used with any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company.
Yes. Loctite Blue must be applied to the threads of all bolts before installation.
If the holes do not match, hold the mount tight against the inside of the tube and line the holes up as best as possible. Use 13/32" and 17/32" transfer punches to mark the two hole locations on the top of the mount, then drill with matching drill bits. If necessary after installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
Dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. If the baseplate does not fit properly, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear. Ensure all trimming of the shroud, bumper insert, and air dam has been completed correctly before attempting to force the baseplate into position.
