Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE (Part #FDRWBX3824) fits 2006-2009 Volkswagen Beetle models. The 2009 model year is the last year covered by this part number. For newer models, check for an updated version.
The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE (Part #FDRWBX3824) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the BX3824 is designed specifically for 2006-09 VW Beetle models. However, if the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with the BX3824. The RangeFinder II, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used due to the design of the removable tabs. The Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. Adapters cannot be used except for the BX8833 and BX88151.
The attachment tab height is 12.5 inches and the width is 22 inches.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
The front fascia, headlight assemblies, hood latch, horn bracket, turbo cooler, air dam, and metal bumper must be removed and reinstalled. Trimming of the belly pan and front grille is also required. The manual notes that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments such as filing holes, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates may be necessary.
Required tools include: 10MM socket, 13MM socket, 18MM socket and wrench, T25 Torx socket, T30 Torx socket, 9/16" socket, long flat screwdriver, small flat screwdriver, reciprocating saw, diagonal cutters, utility knife, hammer, flat cold chisel, self-tapping drill, and LOCTITE Red. A 1" x 4" x 22" block of wood is also needed as a brace but is not provided.
The kit includes: 1 baseplate weldment (61-6209), 4 nutplates with 14" wire (61-5208), 2 support plates (DS and PS), 10 3/8-16 x 1.25" Grade 5 hex bolts, 10 3/8" lock washers, 6 3/8-16 hex nuts, 6 8MM-1.25 x 30MM Grade 8.8 hex bolts, 6 5/16" lock washers, 6 5/16" flat washers, 2 #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 #10-32 x 0.5" slot round head screws, 2 #10 lock washers, 2 #10-32 hex nuts, 2 4-way connectors, 2 attachment assemblies (SF/SB), 2 spacer brackets, 2 1/4-20 x 1" Grade 5 hex bolts, 4 1/4" flat washers, 2 1/4" lock washers, 2 1/4-20 hex nuts, 2 #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 baseplate safety cables (36" Class III), 4 3/8" quicklinks, and 2 black cap plugs.
Yes, drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill two holes into each frame end for the baseplate mounting bolts. Additionally, using the support plate as a template, you must drill two more holes into the frame with a 13/32" drill bit on each side for the nut plates. The manual warns to be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills.
Trimming of the belly pan and front grille is required. Specifically, you must mark and trim an area underneath the frame on both sides to gain access to a hole in the bottom frame for inserting nut plates. On the driver's side, if equipped with a turbo cooler, find a dimpled section of plastic between the turbo cooler and frame and trim around it. You must also mark and trim an area just below the wiring harness to allow it to be moved while drilling. Finally, after reinstalling the fascia and center grille, use a diagonal cutter to trim necessary openings in the grille for attachment tabs, convenience links, and electrical rods.
Cutting is required but welding is not. On the driver's side, you must use a flat cold chisel to cut off a pin attached to the underside of the frame rail to prepare the area for plate installation. You will also use a utility knife to trim belly pan and grille areas, and a reciprocating saw and diagonal cutters for grille trimming.
Torque specifications depend on bolt grade and size. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 10.9 bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs. LOCTITE Red must be used on all bolts before tightening.
No. The manual states: "Many Blue Ox Baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. Even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware specified in the Baseplate Installation Instructions." You must use the hardware supplied in the kit.
Use a replacement bolt of the same grade as the original. In most cases this will be Grade 5. Refer to the parts list to identify the correct grade for each bolt location. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor, or by calling Customer Care at (402) 385-3051. Using a bolt of the wrong grade could compromise safety and void the warranty.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of two cables together will not qualify. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and cannot be reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged baseplate could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Be sure to use LOCTITE Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended torque specifications. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their instructions. Do not substitute other devices if tow bar pins and clips are misplaced.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use LOCTITE Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use if applicable. Blue Ox offers service at rallies and at the factory for a nominal fee to ensure your towing system is in proper working condition.
Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the manufacturer's warranty. The BX3824 is designed for towing behind a motorized vehicle only.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must follow all instructions exactly as written.
The BX8848 4 Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2006-09 VW Beetle with the BX3824 baseplate.
Yes, the BX3824 is designed for 2006-09 VW Beetle. If your vehicle's front looks different, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended. RangeFinder II, Adventurer, and Ambassador cannot be used. Acclaim may be used but won't fold and store. Only adapters BX8833 and BX88151 are compatible.
Yes. You must drill two 13/32" holes into each frame end for baseplate bolts and two more 13/32" holes for nut plates. Trimming of belly pan and grille is also required.
Required tools: 10MM, 13MM, 18MM sockets, T25 and T30 Torx sockets, 9/16" socket, flat and small flat screwdrivers, reciprocating saw, diagonal cutters, utility knife, hammer, flat cold chisel, self-tapping drill, and LOCTITE Red.
Torque depends on bolt grade and size. Grade 5 3/8" bolts: 33 ft-lbs. Grade 8 3/8" bolts: 47 ft-lbs. Metric Grade 8.8 8MM bolts: 16 ft-lbs. Use LOCTITE Red on all bolts before tightening. See page 1 torque chart for all sizes.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They must connect from baseplate to frame rail or cross member and must not touch wires, hoses, or brake lines. They supplement, not replace, legally required tow vehicle safety cables.
Front fascia, headlight assemblies, hood latch, horn bracket, turbo cooler, air dam, and metal bumper must be removed and reinstalled. Belly pan and grille trimming required.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, do not proceed with installation. Call Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before attempting to install the baseplate. This may indicate a different model year or variant that requires different installation procedures.
A firm tug may be needed to release the headlight assembly from the electrical plug. If it remains stuck, ensure you have fully pressed down the silver clip behind the battery box and headlight housing on the driver's side, or located the correct silver clip on the passenger's side between the windshield washer reservoir fill tube and the vacuum baffle. Apply steady, firm pressure rather than jerking.
The manual warns to pay special attention to not allow the clip to fall out while guiding the hood release out. If the clip does fall, carefully retrieve it and ensure it is properly seated before reinstalling the hood release handle. The clip is essential for proper hood release operation.
The manual specifically warns to avoid cutting the wire harness when using the utility knife to trim the area just below the wiring harness. If you do cut the harness, stop work immediately and consult with a qualified automotive electrician before proceeding. Damaged wiring could cause electrical failures or safety hazards. Do not attempt to repair the harness yourself unless you have proper training.
