Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

A reciprocating saw is also needed for trimming frame webbing and air dam.

Yes, drilling is required. A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill holes in the side of the frame rail to align with the nutplates. Additionally, a 1 1/4" hole saw is used to cut a hole on the front of the metal bumper to allow access to the inside of the frame end for inserting the nut plates.
Trimming of the metal bumper and frame webbing is required. Specifically: (1) Frame webbing must be cut 2" to 5.5" down from the top edge, with a vertical cut flush with the frame side, on both sides. (2) The air dam below the metal bumper must be cut 3" up from the bottom edge on both sides. (3) The lower portion of the metal bumper must be trimmed 1 3/4" from the end on both sides. (4) The lower grille must be carefully cut with a utility knife or hacksaw blade to allow attachment receivers to come through. All cut edges should be coated with spray paint to prevent corrosion.
According to the torque chart on page 1 of these instructions, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. However, the manual also references a torque chart on page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions (not provided in this document). Loctite Red must be applied to all bolts before tightening. The removal sequence is: (1) Remove metric bolts inside headlight assemblies (T25 Torx). (2) Remove two Phillips screws from lower grille. (3) Release and remove upper grille. (4) Remove two Torx bolts from top of metal bumper (T30 Torx). (5) Remove three metric bolts from wheel well edge (T25 Torx, both sides). (6) Remove metric bolt from fascia corner above tire (T25 Torx, both sides). (7) Remove four metric bolts from lower fascia edge (T25 Torx, both sides). (8) Remove two Torx bolts above middle of metal bumper (T30 Torx). (9) Remove bolts above and below metal bumper, mark bumper height, then remove bumper. (10) Remove windshield washer reservoir bolts and nuts, disconnect electrical and fluid lines. (11) Remove horn bracket bolts and unplug electrical connections. All removed bolts and screws must be set aside for reinstallation.
The baseplate is slid onto the side of the frame with the attachment tabs pointing down. It is pushed back toward the rear of the vehicle while lifting the cross tube up. The bottom edge of the end plate should be even with the bottom edge of the frame. The top center hole is aligned with the existing bolt location for the front of the washer reservoir on the passenger's side, then the baseplate is clamped to the frame with vise grips. The baseplate is then used as a template to drill holes in the frame rail with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides. Nutplates are inserted into the drilled holes and 3/8" bolts with lock washers are tightened with Loctite Red applied to all bolts. The attachment tabs must be kept level with the vehicle.
After the baseplate is secured, the frame webbing is tapped back 3/8" with a hammer just behind the washer reservoir on the passenger's side. The washer reservoir is then placed on the back two studs and two hex nuts are installed but not tightened. The front metric bolt is replaced with the supplied 6MM hex bolt, spacer tube, flat washers and lock washer. Loctite Red must be applied before tightening. Ensure the webbing does not touch the back side of the reservoir to prevent rubbing a hole in the tank. All electrical and fluid lines are then reconnected.
After the baseplate is fully installed and all electrical connections are verified to be plugged in properly and functioning, the horns and their brackets are reinstalled, styrofoam is reinstalled on the front of the metal bumper, and the fascia is carefully repositioned. The lower grille must be cut with a utility knife or hacksaw blade to allow the attachment receivers to come through on both sides before the fascia is fully reinstalled. Once complete, the tow bar and safety cables are installed according to their package instructions.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and must not be used again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged baseplate could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX3823 kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables and two 3/8" zinc-plated quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines. The cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. The cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
The installer must watch for and avoid: oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed and comes into contact with a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Do not mount permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. The windshield washer reservoir must be positioned so that frame webbing does not touch the back side of the reservoir, which could rub a hole in the tank.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. All bolts should be treated with Loctite Red and tightened to the recommended torque specifications. The baseplate should be registered online at www.blueox.com to receive alerts about product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls. Removal of the attachment tabs when not in use is recommended if applicable.

No. The manual explicitly states that even though bolts may already be present on the vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware specified in the Baseplate Installation Instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5).
