Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The following components must be removed and reinstalled: grille, front fascia, hood latch, horn bracket, turbo cooler, air dam, and metal bumper.
Yes, drilling is required. A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill all mounting holes using the baseplate as a template. On the driver's side, the metal plate must be bent back before drilling and returned to its original position when finished. On the passenger side, the drill bit should be covered with a tube to protect the turbo cooler.
Trimming of the frame, air dam, and grille is required. On the driver's side, a reciprocating saw is used to cut along the lower bumper contour. The air dam on the passenger side must be trimmed before reinstallation. The fascia must be trimmed where the attachment tab receivers and convenience links come through.
Yes. On the driver's side, a reciprocating saw is used to cut along the lower bumper contour as shown in the installation instructions. After cutting, spray the cut edges with good quality paint to prevent rusting.
According to the torque chart provided, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. However, the manual also references torque specifications on page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions, which is not included in this document. Confirm the specific torque value with the General Instructions or contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Loctite Red must be used on all bolts before tightening. The manual explicitly states: "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING."
Installation sequence is: 1) Remove hood latch pin and grille. 2) Remove T-30 Torx screws from behind grille. 3) Remove T-25 Torx bolts from wheel wells (both sides). 4) Release and remove lower grille panels. 5) Remove T-25 Torx bolts below bumper (both sides) and remove fascia. 6) Remove horn bolts and unplug horn. 7) Remove turbo cooler bolts and tie cooler back. 8) Cut lower bumper contour on driver's side with reciprocating saw. 9) Remove bumper bolts and torx bolts (both sides) and remove bumper. 10) Remove center metal bumper torx bolts. 11) Remove air dam tabs and slide down. 12) Slide baseplate over hose on passenger side. 13) Drill all mounting holes using baseplate as template. 14) Install 1-1/2" bolts with lock washers and nut plates. 15) Attach horns to new horn bracket. 16) Drill hole for horn bracket on driver's side and install. 17) Attach baseplate safety cables. 18) Reattach turbo cooler. 19) Reattach air dam and bumper. 20) Trim fascia as needed and reinstall fascia, grille panels, and hood latch.

The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. The two cables together must be positioned around a solid piece of the frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. On the passenger side, cover the 13/32" drill bit with a tube to protect the turbo cooler from damage.
After cutting the bumper with a reciprocating saw, spray the cut edges with good quality paint to prevent rusting.
All electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. The manual explicitly states: "Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE Installing the fascia."
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
No. Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor, or by calling Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
