Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with the BX3830. The RangeFinder II, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used. The Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. Adapters cannot be used except for the BX8833 and BX88151.

The upper grille, front fascia, metal bumper, and windshield washer reservoir must be removed and reinstalled. The temperature sensor must also be removed and reinstalled. The horn brackets and horns must be removed and reinstalled.
Yes, drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill holes in the side of the frame rail on both sides of the vehicle. Additionally, a 1 1/4" hole saw is used to cut a hole on the front of the metal bumper to allow access to the inside of the frame end for nut plate insertion.
Trimming of the metal bumper and frame webbing is required. Using a reciprocating saw, cut the frame webbing 2" down from the top edge, flush with the side of the frame. Cut the back side of the webbing where it was removed. Remove a lower area 1 3/4" from the end of the metal bumper. Cut and remove the air dam just below the metal bumper using a utility knife. Cut the lower grille with a utility knife or hack saw blade to allow attachment receivers to come through. All cut edges must be coated with spray paint to prevent corrosion.
The torque specification for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied before tightening.
The torque specification for 6MM Grade 8.8 bolts is 6 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied before tightening.

If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not used again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating; the combined rating of both cables is what matters, not the individual ratings. Safety cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.

Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten them to the recommended torque specifications.
Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.
1. Remove the upper grille, front fascia, metal bumper, temperature sensor, and windshield washer reservoir. 2. Cut and remove frame webbing and air dam. 3. Remove horns and brackets. 4. Cut a 1 1/4" hole on the front of the metal bumper. 5. Slide the baseplate onto the side of the frame with attachment tabs down, pushing it toward the rear while lifting the cross tube up. 6. Align the top center hole with the existing bolt location for the washer reservoir on the passenger's side and clamp with vise grips. 7. Drill holes in the frame rail using the baseplate as a template. 8. Insert nut plates and tighten 3/8" bolts with lock washers using Loctite Red. 9. Tap the webbing back 3/8" on the passenger's side. 10. Reinstall the washer reservoir, horns, styrofoam, and fascia.
Slide the baseplate onto the side of the frame with the attachment tabs down. Push the baseplate back toward the rear of the vehicle while lifting the cross tube up. The bottom edge of the end plate should be even with the bottom edge of the frame. Keep the baseplate attachment tabs level with the vehicle.
The 1 1/4" hole cut on the front of the metal bumper allows access to the inside of the frame end to insert the nut plates for the baseplate installation.
Loctite Red must be applied to all bolts before tightening to ensure they remain secure. The manual emphasizes this requirement multiple times and states that all bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart with Loctite Red applied.
Using a hammer, tap the webbing toward the back of the vehicle 3/8", just behind the washer reservoir, on the passenger's side. This prepares the area for reinstallation of the washer reservoir.
Put the washer reservoir in place on the back two studs and install the two hex nuts without tightening them initially. Replace the front metric bolt with the 6MM hex bolt provided, and install the flat washers and lock washer provided. Ensure the webbing does not touch the back side of the reservoir to prevent rubbing a hole in the tank. Reconnect all electrical and fluid lines to the reservoir.
All electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia.
Hold the fascia to its original position and carefully cut the lower grille with a utility knife or hack saw blade to allow the attachment receivers to come through. Do this on both sides of the vehicle before reinstalling the fascia.
Due to dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles, minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for auto manufacturer tolerances. These adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, adding shims, and/or bending end plates.
Remove the temperature sensor by sliding a screwdriver under the clip and pulling the sensor straight down. Cut the side piece off the air temperature sensor, bend the metal piece back, and snap the sensor into place. This prepares the area for baseplate installation.
Using the 12MM socket, remove the metric bolt from the horn bracket on both sides. Unplug the electrical connections and set the horn and bracket aside. After baseplate installation is complete, reinstall both horns and their brackets.
