Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The fascia and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed during installation and then reinstalled after the baseplate is installed. The bumper will be removed and not reinstalled. A plastic piece from the bottom of the bumper will be removed and then reattached to the cross member with the baseplate. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill out four plastic rivets using a 1/4-inch drill bit from the plastic piece on the bottom of the bumper (step 8). You will also drill two 1/2-inch holes in the frame using the support bracket as a template (step 12). Some trimming of the plastic shroud and fascia is also required using a utility knife.
Using a utility knife, trim the plastic shroud on both sides of the vehicle as shown in step 6 and remove the piece. After the baseplate is installed, hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling it (step 17).
1. Remove wheel well trim and bolts (steps 1-3). 2. Remove fascia and unplug electrical connectors (steps 4-5). 3. Trim plastic shroud (step 6). 4. Remove bumper and plastic piece (steps 7-8). 5. Install baseplates with bolts snugged but loose (step 9). 6. Attach cross member (step 10). 7. Attach support brackets (step 11). 8. Drill frame holes (step 12). 9. Install remaining bolts (steps 13-14). 10. Attach plastic piece to cross member (step 15). 11. Attach safety cables (step 16). 12. Trim and reinstall fascia (step 17). Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten to proper torque throughout.
Initially, snug up the baseplate bolts but leave them loose (step 9). After the cross member is attached and the baseplate is level, tighten the baseplate on each side, then the cross member (step 10). After all bolts are installed, apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart provided. The manual emphasizes this multiple times throughout the installation steps.
Torque specifications depend on bolt size and grade. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4-inch = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16-inch = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8-inch = 33 ft-lbs, 1/2-inch = 78 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4-inch = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16-inch = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8-inch = 47 ft-lbs, 1/2-inch = 119 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 10.9 bolts: 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs. See the complete torque chart on page 1.
The torque specification for 1/2-inch Grade 5 bolts is 78 foot-pounds. These bolts are used to attach the baseplates (step 9), support brackets (step 11), and for bottom front holes (step 14). Always apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The torque specification for 3/8-inch Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. These bolts are used to attach the cross member to the baseplates (step 10). Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
During removal of the wheel well trim, unplug the light as the trim is pulled back (step 2). When removing the fascia, unplug the electrical connectors on both sides of the vehicle (step 5). Ensure all electrical connections are plugged back in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. The manual recommends the BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit for this vehicle.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Yes. The BX1148 includes two Class IV safety cables that must be attached to the baseplate. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. The manual provides two recommended installation options on page 9. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. After installation, it is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.

No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. Tighten the loose bolts to the appropriate torque specification using Loctite Red on all bolt threads. Refer to the torque chart on page 1 for the correct torque based on bolt size and grade. It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for loose bolts before each towing trip.
If the baseplate is damaged or involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
