The Blue Ox BX3836 Tow Bar Bracket is an essential tool for your towing needs. It features a sleek black powder coat finish that not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also provides corrosion resistance. The bracket is easy to install with a bolt-on mounting type, and it includes all the necessary hardware for a hassle-free, do-it-yourself installation. With the Blue Ox BX3836 Tow Bar Bracket, towing has never been easier or more secure.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Required tools include: torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, utility knife, large vise grip, 1-1/4" hole saw, 3/8" drill bit, 10MM socket, 16MM socket, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, T25 Torx, and T30 Torx. Loctite Red is also required for all bolt threads.
The kit includes: 4 x 3/8" nut plates with 14" wire, 2 x attachment tab assemblies, 1 x breakaway bracket, 2 x 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex head bolts (Grade 5), 2 x #10-32 1/2" round slotted head screws, 4 x 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head bolts (Grade 5), 4 x 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts (Grade 5), 2 x #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 x #10-32 hex nuts, 4 x 3/8"-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts, 2 x 1/4"-20 hex nylon nuts, 8 x 3/8" lock washers, 2 x #10 lock washers, 1 x electrical bracket, 2 x class III safety cables, 2 x 3/8" quicklinks, and 2 x black cap plug receivers.
The grille, fascia, bumper, horns, and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed and reinstalled after baseplate installation. The styrofoam support and temperature sensor from the bumper must also be removed. All removed components should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes, drilling is required. You will drill a 1-1/4" access hole on the underside of the bumper on the passenger side, enlarge an existing hole on the driver side using a reciprocating saw, and drill 3/8" holes through the bumper and frame for baseplate mounting. A 5/16" hole is also drilled for optional breakaway bracket installation. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Trimming is required on both sides of the vehicle: trim the plastic shielding just below the notch on the frame, use a reciprocating saw to trim the outer flange of the frame down 2" and back to the face of the frame, and trim the bumper flanges to match the frame. The fascia must also be trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstallation. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Yes. The trimming of the plastic shielding, frame flanges, and bumper flanges are permanent modifications. The drilling of access holes and mounting holes is also permanent. These modifications cannot be reversed without significant vehicle damage.
The manual provides a comprehensive torque chart for both metric and inch bolts. For the Grade 5 bolts used in this installation: 1/4" bolts = 10 ft-lbs, 3/8" bolts = 33 ft-lbs, and 5/16" bolts = 19 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the threads. Refer to the torque specification chart on page 1 for additional bolt sizes.
Position the baseplate on the vehicle so there is an approximate 1/2" gap between the baseplate and the back of the bumper, with the baseplate sitting on the lip of the frame. Level and clamp the baseplate before drilling and installing hardware.
Prior to drilling and installing the remainder of the baseplate bolts, flatten the three tabs of the horn bracket so it will sit flat on the face of the side plate. It may also be necessary to ream out the slot to accommodate the hardware. The horn assembly attaches to the lower rear hole of the baseplate.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. A hole must be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.
Yes. Two permanent baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046) are included and must be attached from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. Safety cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning properly. Verify that safety cables are properly attached and do not rub against hoses or moving parts. Confirm that the fascia and grille are properly reinstalled and that all trimmed edges are painted to prevent rusting.
Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rusting. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to receive alerts about product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use correct replacement parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
1. Remove grille, fascia, bumper, horns, and washer reservoir. 2. Trim plastic shielding and frame flanges. 3. Drill access holes in bumper. 4. Position and clamp baseplate with 1/2" gap from bumper. 5. Drill and install 3/8" hardware through bumper and frame. 6. Flatten horn bracket tabs and install horn assembly. 7. Attach safety cables to baseplate convenience links. 8. Reinstall washer reservoir, temperature sensor, and styrofoam support. 9. Optionally install breakaway bracket. 10. Trim and reinstall fascia and grille.
Handling of cosmetic parts may require the use of protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface during installation.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual shows recommended installation routing to the frame. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
