Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX3837 is a towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox designed specifically for 2016-2018 Volkswagen Golf vehicles. It is used to attach a tow bar to the front of the vehicle for towing purposes. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), and exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Yes, the BX3837 is designed for 2016-2018 VW Golf vehicles. However, the manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, Loctite Red, 3/8" drill bit, 1-1/4" hole saw, 10MM socket, 16MM socket, 16MM wrench, 7/16" socket, 7/16" wrench, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, T25 Torx, and T30 Torx. A torque wrench is essential for proper fastener tightening.
The kit includes: 4 nut plates with 14" wire (61-5208), 1 baseplate (61-7704), 2 attachment tab assemblies (62-3468), 1 breakaway bracket (102-7355), 2 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex head bolts Grade 5 (201-0050), 2 #10-32 1/2" round slotted head screws (201-0192), 8 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts Grade 5 (201-0440), 2 #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), 2 #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), 4 3/8"-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts (202-0090), 2 1/4"-20 hex nylon nuts (202-0102), 4 1/4" flat washers (203-0001), 4 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), 2 #10 lock washers (203-0054), 1 4-way bracket (299-0685), 2 class III safety cables (226-0046), 2 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and 2 black cap plug receivers (290-0437).
The following components must be removed and reinstalled after baseplate installation: grille, fascia, driver side headlight, bumper, and windshield washer fluid reservoir. The manual also requires removal of the horn bracket assemblies, styrofoam support, temperature sensor, and fascia brace. All removed items should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface and reinstalled unless otherwise noted.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work." Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Technical Service Department at (402) 385-3051.
Yes, drilling is required. The installation involves drilling multiple holes through the frame and bumper using a 3/8" drill bit. Additionally, a 1-1/4" hole saw is used to drill an access hole on the underside of the bumper on the passenger side only. The manual notes that when using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Yes, significant trimming is required. Using a reciprocating saw, you must trim the outer flange of the frame down 1-3/4" from the top and back to the face of the frame down through the bottom lip on both sides. The bumper mounting flange must also be trimmed where it overlaps the frame cuts. Additionally, plastic shielding below the bumper must be trimmed off on both sides and is not reinstalled. The manual warns to be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw.
Yes. The manual specifies to use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is an important step to prevent corrosion of the exposed metal after trimming.
The manual provides a comprehensive torque chart for metric and inch bolts. For the 3/8"-16 hex head bolts (Grade 5) used in this installation, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For the 1/4"-20 bolts (Grade 5), the torque is 10 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided, and Loctite Red must be applied to all bolt threads before tightening. The specific grade of each bolt is listed in the parts list and must be matched when replacing fasteners.
The attachment tab height is 14" and the attachment tab width is 24".
When positioning the baseplate on the vehicle, there should be an approximate 1/2" gap between the baseplate and the back of the bumper, with the baseplate sitting on the lip of the frame. This gap is maintained while the baseplate is leveled and clamped before drilling and installing hardware.
Yes, the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. The manual instructs to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions. The manual also emphasizes that all electrical connections must be plugged in and accessories must be functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure the towed vehicle weight does not exceed the GVWR.
Yes. The BX3837 kit includes two Class III safety cables (226-0046) and two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). These permanent baseplate safety cables must be attached to the baseplate and secured to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables are strongly recommended to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Additionally, do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. The owner's responsibility includes inspecting all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.

Blue Ox recommends registering your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls. Blue Ox also offers service at rallies and at their factory for a nominal fee to service your towing system.
The manual states that many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. However, even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Only genuine factory replacement parts should be used on the baseplate; do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser covering defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service from the date of delivery. The warranty is non-transferable and requires the customer warranty card to be returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice. The warranty does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification or neglect, failure to properly service and maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint or rust, or towing behind a non-motorized vehicle. For 3/8"-16 Grade 5 hex head bolts, torque to 33 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Check your vehicle owner's manual for towing specifications.
Yes. Two Class III safety cables and two 3/8" quicklinks are included. They must be attached to the baseplate and secured to the vehicle frame to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose.
Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning before reinstalling the fascia. Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Verify all bolts are tightened to specification with Loctite Red applied.
Prior to drilling and installing the remainder of the baseplate bolts, flatten the three tabs of the horn brackets (upper left) so it will sit flat on the face of the side plate. It may also be necessary to ream out the slot to accommodate the hardware. This adjustment is made before continuing to drill the remaining baseplate holes through the frame.
Reinstall the washer reservoir using four flat washers on the top left stud positioned between the tank and frame. This spacing will allow the tank to clear the baseplate.
On the backside of the fascia, remove the plastic covers on both sides. Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs. Then reinstall the fascia and fascia cover.
