Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The BX3839 baseplate is designed specifically for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The manual does not confirm fitment for Golf GTI models without ACC or other model years. If your vehicle does not have ACC or is a different year, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 to confirm compatibility.
The installation instructions require checking that the baseplate does not hit the ACC during positioning (Step 15). The ACC must be temporarily removed from the bumper during installation (Step 7) and then reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted (Step 21). Position the baseplate approximately 10-1/4" from the front of the bumper and verify clearance on both sides before drilling.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, reciprocating saw, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, Loctite Red, 3/8" drill bit, 10MM socket, 7/16" wrench, 16MM socket, 9/16" wrench, 7/16" socket, 5/16" nut driver, and 9/16" socket. You will also need T25 Torx, T30 Torx, 5/16" Allen socket or wrench, and a 1-1/4" hole saw. Protective covers and rags are recommended to prevent damage to cosmetic parts.
The following components must be removed and set aside for reinstallation: grille, fascia, fascia brace, horn assemblies (both sides), styrofoam bumper support, temperature sensor, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), windshield washer fluid reservoir, and driver side headlight. The plastic shielding below the bumper is trimmed and not reinstalled. Place all removed items on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 3/8" hole through the frame for the back bottom bolts on both sides (Step 15), and continue drilling the remaining baseplate holes through the frame on each side (Step 17). Additionally, a 1-1/4" hole saw is used to drill an access hole on the underside of the bumper on the passenger side only (Step 14). A reciprocating saw is also used to enlarge an existing hole on the driver side of the bumper.
Using a reciprocating saw, trim the outer flange of the frame down 2" from the top and back to the face of the frame through the bottom lip on both sides of the vehicle (Step 11). The bumper mounting flange must also be trimmed on both sides where it contacts the cut frame (Step 12). Plastic shielding below the bumper is trimmed and not reinstalled (Step 13). After cutting, use good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
Yes. The frame flange is trimmed 2" down from the top and back to the face of the frame using a reciprocating saw (Step 11), and the bumper mounting flange is trimmed to match (Step 12). These modifications are permanent and cannot be reversed. The plastic shielding below the bumper is also permanently removed and not reinstalled (Step 13).
According to the Bolt Torque Specifications chart, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be tightened to 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to the threads before tightening. The baseplate uses 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" and 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" Grade 5 hex head bolts with lock washers and either nut plates or nylon lock nuts.
The attachment tab height is 12" and the attachment tab width is 28".
Position the baseplate so there is approximately 10-1/4" distance between the back of the baseplate and the front of the bumper (Step 15). This distance should be maintained on both sides of the vehicle.
1. Drill and install the 3/8" hardware in the back bottom hole on both sides, fully tightening all hardware (Step 15). 2. Flatten the three horn bracket tabs and ream out the slot if necessary (Step 16). 3. Continue drilling the remaining baseplate holes through the frame on each side. 4. Install 3/8" bolts into the top two holes with lock washers and nut plates. 5. Install 3/8" bolts into the bottom two holes with nylon lock nut on back side. 6. Attach horn assemblies to a lower rear hole. 7. Fully tighten all hardware with Loctite Red on all bolt threads (Step 17).
Reinstall the windshield washer fluid reservoir using four flat washers on the top left stud positioned between the tank and the frame (Step 20). This spacing ensures the tank clears the baseplate.
Before reinstalling the fascia, unclip and remove the plastic pieces on the back of the fascia; these will not be reinstalled (Step 22). After the baseplate is installed, hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs, then reinstall the fascia and grille (Step 23).
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Yes, permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and must be installed. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame using the provided convenience link and quicklinks (Step 19). The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. This includes the Adaptive Cruise Control, temperature sensor, and any other electrical components that were disconnected during removal.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. If there is a gap between the baseplate and the frame, use the optional spacers (part 101-9767, 10 GA spacer with open 7/16" W x 3/4" LG slot) included in the hardware kit. Slide the spacer down between the baseplate and the frame, then tighten the bolt fully (Step 18). This accommodates dimensional variations between vehicles due to manufacturer tolerances.
It may be necessary to ream out the slot on the horn bracket to accommodate the hardware (Step 16). Use appropriate tools to enlarge the slot as needed to allow the bolts to pass through and attach properly to the lower rear hole of the baseplate.
