Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The BX1924 fits 1993-95 Dodge Caravan models with LE, SE, or ES trim levels only. If your Caravan has a different trim level, this baseplate is not compatible. The manual does not list compatibility for other Dodge van models or years outside this range.

The plastic bumper and chrome grill above the fender must be removed. The bumper is held by six plastic panel fasteners underneath, four panel fasteners along the splash guards, four screws on the grill (removable with an Allen wrench or star screwdriver), six more panel fasteners accessible through the grill opening, and two bolts on each end of the bumper (nuts removed with a 10mm socket from underneath). The inner black fiber bumper's bottom bolts must also be removed.
Yes. Four 13/32" holes must be drilled through the outer mount holes into the frame of the van. Plastic covers on each side will need to be partially removed to allow access. The baseplate can be used as a template, or hole centers can be transfer punched and the baseplate removed before drilling. If using the baseplate as a template, Locktite must be applied to eight bolts already started and tightened securely before drilling.
Yes. A portion of the bottom of the bumper will need to be trimmed with a utility knife to allow it to fit properly over the front supports. The slot will be approximately two inches wide and two inches deep. Additional plastic around the supports may require more trimming to allow access for bolts during installation.
Required tools are: 10mm wrench, 9/16" wrench, 15/16" wrench, 13mm wrench, 15mm wrench, drill with 13/32" bit, 13/32" transfer punch, Locktite Blue, jack, screwdriver, pliers, and utility knife.
Twelve bolts are provided with the baseplate. The baseplate attaches to the center motor mount and body frame using fourteen bolts total, so two additional bolts must be sourced separately or reused from the vehicle.
Yes. The manual states "With help, position the baseplate under the front of the van" in step 9, indicating that at least two people are recommended for proper positioning of the baseplate.
Yes. A jack must be placed under the engine near where the mount bolts to the engine, with enough pressure to raise the front of the van about one inch. This supports the engine while the center motor mount bolts are removed.
First, remove the nut from the bottom bolt using a 15mm socket. Then loosen the nut on the top bolt with a 15mm socket. Pull the bumper away from the van and remove the two thin internal tooth washers on the bottom bolt by prying them away with a screwdriver and twisting them off with pliers. Finally, remove the bottom bolt completely. The top bolt will be reused.
A 3/8 x 1 1/2 bolt is inserted into the top hole of the support with Locktite applied to the threads. Two 3/8 flat washers are placed behind the support, and the bolt is started through the bottom hole of the fiber bumper. A 3/8 flat washer, lock washer, and hex nut are started on the bolt. This is repeated on the other end. All four bolts are then fully tightened.
First, remove the nuts from the two upper bolts and save them for reassembly. Remove the front bolt of the engine mount. Then slide the nut plate into the engine mount with the nut facing up, aligned with the 5/8" hole. Position the baseplate so the vertical brackets fit over the two bolts on the center engine mount and the 5/8" hole aligns. Start the 5/8" bolt and lock washer into the engine mount, then start the nuts on the two bolts at the rear of the mount.
Before drilling, the following bolts are started: the 5/8" bolt and lock washer into the engine mount, the nuts on the two bolts at the rear of the mount, the 10mm x 70mm bolt with lock and flat washers through the hole ahead of the 5/8" bolt, and the four 3/8 x 1 1/4 inch bolts down through the front supports. If the baseplate is used as a template for drilling, Locktite must be applied to these eight bolts and they must be tightened securely before drilling.
The four 3/8 x 1 1/4 bolts are bolted through the outer mounts to the van frame using nuts, flat washers, and lock washers. The flat washers must be placed on the frame side of the hole. Locktite must be applied and all bolts tightened securely.
After all bolts have been tightened, the bumper can be secured to the van with the panel fasteners and two bolts, and the grill can be reattached. The tow bar and safety cables should then be installed according to their included instructions.
During tow testing, Automatic Equipment found that the vehicle may not track properly while turning through a sharp dip. The front wheels may stay in the turned position after the vehicle has come out of the dip and straightened out. If the van is towed for any distance with the front wheels still turned, damage to the tires and/or the front end of the van may result. Watch for this condition during towing.
No. The manual explicitly states: "Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost." You must use the original or obtain a replacement from the manufacturer.
