Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

Yes. The tow hooks must be removed and are not reinstalled for the baseplate installation. Using an 18MM socket, remove the four bolts from the tow hooks (two on each side). Also remove the existing nut plates from the tow hook pockets.
Yes. Some drilling is required. You must drill the middle hole of the baseplate through the frame using a 1/2" drill bit. The manual also notes that some trimming may be required. Additionally, a hole must be drilled according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions if that kit is used (which is recommended for this vehicle).
1. Remove the four tow hook bolts (18MM socket, two per side) and existing nut plates from tow hook pockets. 2. Position baseplate on frame, aligning to frame holes, and clamp in place. Install 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolts with 1/2" lock and flat washers into rear holes with 1/2"-13 nut plates on inside of frame (both sides), fully tighten. 3. Install 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolts with 1/2" lock and flat washers into front holes with 1/2"-13 whiz nuts on inside of frame (both sides), fully tighten. 4. Drill the middle hole of baseplate through frame with 1/2" drill bit, install 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolts with 1/2" lock and flat washers with 1/2"-13 whiz nuts on inside of frame (both sides), fully tighten. 5. Remove existing bolt from outside of frame (19MM socket), install safety cable bracket reusing that bolt, and install 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolt with 1/2" lock and flat washers into baseplate hole with 1/2"-13 hex nut on inside of baseplate (both sides), fully tighten. 6. Attach permanent baseplate safety cables to convenience link on baseplate and secure to frame.
Yes. You must use a sufficient amount of Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. This is required for proper installation.
For 1/2" Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 78 foot-pounds. The BX1712 uses 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5 ZP throughout the installation.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed your vehicle's GVWR.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. The BX1712 kit includes 2 x Class IV Safety Cables and 2 x 1/2" Quicklinks for this purpose. These cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The manual provides recommended arrangements in illustrations. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and included with the kit. They must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and do not rub against wires, hoses, or brake lines. They work in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Do not exceed your vehicle's GVWR, as this will void the warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
