Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The kit includes: 2 baseplates (driver and passenger side), 2 attachment tab assemblies, 2 convenience links, 1 electrical bracket, 1/4"-20 and 1/2"-13 hex head bolts in various lengths, hex nuts and lock nuts, flat washers and lock washers, 2 class IV safety cables, 2 quicklinks, and 2 black cap plug receivers. See the parts list on page 3 for complete quantities and part numbers.
No, the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is not included. The manual states it is recommended for this vehicle but must be ordered separately. You will need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Yes. The installation requires removal and reinstallation of the fascia cover, fascia, and bumper. The fascia cover is held by 12 push pins (6 per side). The fascia is secured by 8 screws (4 from the top edge, 4 from the underside) plus 2 additional screws from the wheel wells and upper body. The bumper is held by 4 bolts from the top and 2 bolts from the reinforcement bar on each side.
Yes. The factory tow hooks must be removed using an 18MM socket/wrench to remove 2 bolts from each side. Additionally, some models may have a support tube tack welded inside the frame that must be removed prior to baseplate installation.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Technical Service Department at (402) 385-3051. The manual does not explicitly prohibit DIY installation but strongly emphasizes dealer installation.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two 1/2" holes in the frame rails to mount the convenience links and baseplates. The manual states to place the convenience link against the frame, pin the front hole with a 1/2" bolt, level the link, mark the frame for the rear hole, and then drill both holes using a 1/2" drill bit to line up with existing holes on the other side of the frame. This is done on both the inside passenger and outside driver frame rails.
Yes, the manual states that some drilling and trimming is required. The instruction notes indicate that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. The manual also recommends using a reciprocating saw for any cutting work and warns to be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Yes. The manual states to use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is an important maintenance step to prevent corrosion of exposed frame metal.
The manual provides a torque chart for both inch and metric bolts. For Grade 5 inch bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 inch bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the threads.
The attachment tab height is 18" and the attachment tab width is 32-1/2".
The baseplate includes a 6-pin connector, a 4-pin connector, a breakaway switch, and an electrical bracket (part 299-0685). The manual recommends the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit for this vehicle, which requires drilling a hole according to the kit instructions. An optional plug receiver can be installed through the bumper using 1/4" x 1-1/2" bolts, washers, and lock nuts, with the electrical bracket securing it on the backside.
Yes. The manual states to be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This ensures that any wiring issues are identified and corrected before the fascia cover is reinstalled.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. The BX1711 kit includes 2 class IV safety cables (part 226-0049) and 2 quicklinks (part 229-0512). However, permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. As the installer, you are responsible for watching for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning properly. Verify that the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use. It is the owner's responsibility to hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
Yes. The manual states to remove the attachment tabs when not in use. This helps protect the tabs from damage and keeps the vehicle's appearance clean when not actively towing.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. To activate coverage, the customer warranty card must be returned within 30 days of purchase, and a copy of the original invoice showing date and place of purchase must accompany any warranty claim. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification or neglect, failure to properly service and maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint or rust. Register your warranty at http://blueox.com/warranty/
The warranty is voided by: incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification or neglect of product, failure to properly service and maintain, misuse, act of God, accident, failure to follow guidelines in the instructional material, exceeding the vehicle's GVWR, or towing behind a non-motorized vehicle. The warranty also does not cover normal wear and tear, paint or rust. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use only a replacement bolt of the same grade to avoid voiding the warranty.
No. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, you must use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Using non-matching bolt grades could compromise the structural integrity of the installation and will void the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Install the top outer bolts first, then push in on the bottom of the bumper to line up the inner bottom bolts. Clamp the bumper when the hole is lined up and reinstall the lower bolts. Continue to reinstall the bumper bar bolts and reconnect the electrical connections on the underside of the bumper.
Position the appropriate baseplate (driver or passenger side) into the tow hook pocket. Install 1/2"-13 x 5" bolts from the outside of the frame with the convenience link, 1/2" lock washers and lock nuts on the inside of the frame. Tighten down until the frame squeezes against the baseplate. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Place the convenience link against the frame and pin the front hole with a 1/2" bolt. Level the link and mark the frame for the rear hole. Do this on the inside passenger and outside driver frame rails. Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill out both holes to line up with the existing holes on the other side of the frame.
Yes, the BX1711 is designed for 2014-15 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks, including Denali models. For other model years, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
You will need: torque wrench, drill with 1/2" bit, sockets (7MM, 10MM, 15MM, 18MM, 3/4"), wrenches (18MM, 3/4"), vise grip, screwdriver, tape measure, T15 Torx, and Loctite Red.
Tighten 1/2" Grade 5 bolts to 78 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Check your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Verify all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning. Ensure safety cables do not rub against hoses or moving parts.
