Blue Ox base plates are custom designed for each specific towed vehicle. When you purchase a Blue Ox base plate, it includes all the necessary hardware and instructions for a do-it-yourself installation.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1633 baseplate is compatible with 2001-02 GMC Pickup 2500/3500 models with 4WD. Confirm your vehicle year and drivetrain match the listed applications: 1999-07 Chevrolet Pick Up 1500 Classic HD (2/4WD); 1999-02 Chevrolet Pick Up 2500/3500 (2/4WD); 2001-02 Chevrolet Suburban 2500; 2001-02 GMC Pickup 1500 HD (2/4WD); 2001-02 GMC Pickup 2500/3500 (4WD); 2000-02 GMC Yukon XL 2500 (4WD); and 2001-02 GMC Yukon Denali 2500 (4WD).
Yes, the BX1633 is compatible with both 2WD and 4WD versions of the listed vehicles. The application list specifies (2/4WD) for Chevrolet Pick Up 1500 Classic HD and 2500/3500, and GMC Pickup 1500 HD. GMC Pickup 2500/3500, Yukon XL 2500, and Yukon Denali 2500 are listed as 4WD only.
The BX1633 is designed for vehicles weighing over 5000 lbs and requires a Class IV rated tow bar and safety cables. Class IV is the highest towing capacity rating and is necessary for this vehicle weight.
You will need: utility knife, Loctite, 1/2" drill bit, 19 mm wrench, flat head screwdriver, and 3/4" socket.
The kit includes: 1 baseplate (61-5377); 6 × 12mm-1.75 × 50mm hex bolts Grade 8.8; 8 × 12mm lock washers; 8 × 12mm flat washers; 2 × 12mm hex nuts; 2 × tow hook closures (107-2269); 2 × 12mm-1.75 × 40mm hex bolts Grade 8.8; 2 × 1/2-13 × 1 1/2" hex bolts Grade 5 zinc plated; 2 × 1/2" lock washers zinc plated; 2 × 1/2-13 nut plates with 10" wire; 2 additional tow hook closures (107-2495); 2 × 36" Class IV baseplate safety cables; and 4 × 1/2" quicklinks zinc plated.
The lower bumper molding should be removed for installation to make the installation and trimming easier, though the manual notes this is not strictly necessary. After installation, the bumper molding is replaced, and the inside area on plastic openings where attachment tabs should extend through must be trimmed.
The manual recommends removing the plastic push pins that hold the lower plastic from the metal bumper and pulling the plastic off, but notes this is not necessary—it will simply make the installation and trimming easier.
Yes, drilling is required. The baseplate mounts using two existing tow hook holes and two new 1/2" holes that must be drilled in the bottom of the baseplate. You will need a 1/2" drill bit.
You must drill two 1/2" holes in the bottom of the baseplate. These holes are used with 12mm-1.75 × 50mm bolts, lock washers, flat washers, and nuts to secure the baseplate to the frame.
Yes, after replacing the bumper molding, the inside area on plastic openings where the attachment tabs should extend through needs to be trimmed. Use a utility knife for this task.
1. Remove the inside and bottom bolts from each tow hook. 2. Hold the baseplate up to the frame so bolt holes align with the tow hook bolt holes. 3. Use 12mm-1.75 × 50mm bolts with lock washers and flat washers, apply Loctite, and thread into the tow hooks. 4. Tighten and torque each bolt according to the chart in the General Instruction Sheet (not provided in this manual). 5. Drill two 1/2" holes in the bottom of the baseplate. 6. Use 12mm-1.75 × 50mm bolts with lock washers, flat washers, and nuts, apply Loctite, and secure through the drilled holes.
Remove the remaining hex bolt (outside bolt) that holds the tow hooks. Slide the open end of the tow hook closure over the end of the truck's tow hook. The other end bolts back to the bolt hole for the tow hook using a 12mm-1.75 × 40mm bolt with lock washer and flat washer. Apply Loctite to the bolt.
The manual states to 'tighten and torque each bolt according to the chart in the General Instruction Sheet,' but this chart is not included in the BX1633 installation manual. You will need to consult the General Instruction Sheet provided separately or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the specific torque values.
The vehicle weighs over 5000 lbs, which requires the highest towing capacity rating. Class IV is the appropriate rating for this vehicle weight and ensures safe towing.
Yes, Loctite must be applied to all bolts during installation. The manual specifies applying Loctite when threading bolts into the tow hooks and when securing the tow hook closures. Loctite is included in the tools required.
Some vehicle models may require the 1/2" quick link provided with the Class IV safety cables because of different size vehicle tow hook diameters. Four quicklinks (part 229-0512) are included in the kit for this purpose.
The BX1633 fits 1999-07 Chevrolet Pick Up 1500 Classic HD, 1999-02 Chevrolet Pick Up 2500/3500, 2001-02 Chevrolet Suburban 2500, 2001-02 GMC Pickup 1500 HD, 2001-02 GMC Pickup 2500/3500, 2000-02 GMC Yukon XL 2500, and 2001-02 GMC Yukon Denali 2500. Confirm your exact year and model.
Class IV rated tow bar and safety cables are required. The vehicle weighs over 5000 lbs.
Utility knife, Loctite, 1/2" drill bit, 19 mm wrench, flat head screwdriver, and 3/4" socket.
Yes, you must drill two 1/2" holes in the bottom of the baseplate. The baseplate also mounts to two existing tow hook holes.
The lower bumper molding should be removed for easier installation and trimming, though it is not strictly necessary. It must be replaced after installation with trimming of the plastic openings.
Yes, Loctite must be applied to all bolts during installation. It is included in the tools required.
