Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1680 is designed for 2007-09 Chevy Equinox models. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances, including filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
No. Due to the design of the removable tabs, the RangeFinderII tow bar cannot be used with the BX1680 baseplate.
Most adapters cannot be used with the BX1680 baseplate. Only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible. All other adapters are excluded.
The kit includes: one welded baseplate (61-6503), eight nut plates (61-5208), eight 3/8-16 x 2" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0444), eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two 10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws (201-0192), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two 4-way electrical connectors (101-5822), two removable attachment tab assemblies (62-3469), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and two receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
Required tools are: flat screwdriver, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 7MM socket, reciprocating saw, 10MM socket, utility knife, large vise grip, and Loctite RED. A power drill is mentioned as an option, though care must be taken regarding torque and drill bit length.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. The fascia must be removed during installation and reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. The removal process involves removing bolts with 10MM and 7MM sockets, popping out fascia corners with a flat screwdriver, removing push pins with a flat screwdriver, and then lifting and squeezing to separate the fascia from the vehicle.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, you must drill four holes on each side of the vehicle using a 13/32" drill bit. These holes are used to attach the baseplate to the frame with 3/8-16 x 2" hex bolts and nut plates.
Yes, trimming is required. Using a reciprocating saw, you must trim under the bumper on both sides and trim away a 1" across and up plastic area on the back side of the fascia.
The manual references a torque chart on the front page and page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions, but the specific torque value for 3/8-16 x 2" Grade 5 bolts is not provided in this installation document. Refer to the torque chart in the complete General Instructions or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the correct specification.
The attachment tab height is 15" and the attachment tab width is 24".
The kit includes two 4-way electrical connectors (part number 101-5822). The manual also shows that 6-way round and 4-way round electrical connectors are available options.
The BX8869 Bulb & Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle, not required. The manual shows a possible location for the kit on the vehicle diagram.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1680 kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part number 226-0046). These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Be sure the cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If your vehicle has additional options that interfere with mounting permanent baseplate safety cables, secure the cables to a solid piece of the vehicle frame as described in the instructions included with the cables. Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. This ensures the electrical system is working correctly before the fascia is reinstalled.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Use only genuine factory replacement parts; do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use the correct replacement bolt will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Additionally, towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
