Upgrade your towing capabilities with the Blue Ox BX1679 Tow Bar Bracket. This product, custom designed for each specific towed vehicle, is made from high-quality steel and finished with a durable black powder coat to ensure it stands up to the harshest conditions. It's easy to install with its bolt-on mounting type, and comes complete with all necessary hardware. With the Blue Ox BX1679 Tow Bar Bracket, you can tow with confidence, knowing you've got a tough, reliable product that's built to last.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1679 is designed for 2008-12 Chevrolet Malibu. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. These may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates.
No. Due to the design of the removable attachment tabs, the RangeFinderII and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used with the BX1679 baseplate. Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with this baseplate.
Most adapters cannot be used with the BX1679 baseplate. The only exceptions are adapters BX8833 and BX88151, which are compatible.
The BX1679 attachment tab height is 15 inches and the width is 22-1/2 inches.
The following tools are required: Loctite RED, 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, Phillips screwdriver, large vise grips, and utility knife.
The BX8848 Four Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle.
Yes. The front fascia and air baffle must be removed for baseplate installation. The fascia is reinstalled after drilling and trimming are complete.
Yes. Drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, you must drill four holes into the frame rail on each side (driver's and passenger's side) using a 13/32" drill bit.
Trimming of the air dam and fascia is required. Using a utility knife, trim the plastic piece next to the radiator flush with the bottom of the bumper on both sides. For the air dam, mark and trim according to your model year: 2008-09 models require marking 3 inches down from the hole and around the air dam contour; 2010-11 models require marking straight across the top and down the side. On the driver's side, mark straight down from the air dam tab 3 inches and horizontally back to the air dam contour. Finally, trim 2-1/2" of the upper rib off the fascia on both sides to give room for the baseplate; some models may need more trimming.
Yes. The drilling of frame rail holes and trimming of the air dam and fascia are permanent modifications. The baseplate is designed to remain installed on the vehicle.
A 13/32" drill bit is required. This is used to drill the remaining holes into the frame rail on both the driver's and passenger's sides, using the baseplate as a template.
The baseplate uses 3/8-16 hex bolts in two sizes: 3/8-16 x 1" hex bolts (qty 4) and 3/8-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolts (qty 2). All bolts are Grade 5, zinc plated. Two 1" nut plates are used to secure the upper front bolt holes. All bolts require Loctite RED before tightening.
A 1" nut plate is guided up through the opening in the bottom of the frame rail and aligned with the upper front bolt hole. The 3/8-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolt and 3/8" lock washer are then installed to the nut plate. This is done on both the driver's and passenger's sides.
The upper back hole of the baseplate on the driver's side is aligned with the existing horn bracket hole. The horn bracket is reinstalled with the existing bolt, and this serves as one of the mounting points for the baseplate.
The upper back hole of the baseplate on the passenger's side is aligned with the existing air intake valve hole, into which a push pin will be inserted. This serves as one of the mounting points for the baseplate on the passenger's side.
The kit includes: 1 welded baseplate (61-6502), 2 nut plates (61-5208), 4 3/8-16 x 1" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0443), 2 3/8-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0440), 6 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), 4 3/8-16 hex nuts (202-0003), 2 #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), 2 10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws (201-0192), 2 #10 lock washers (203-0054), 2 #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), 2 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), 2 removable attachment tab assemblies (62-3469), 2 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), 2 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and 2 receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
Yes. Loctite RED must be used on all bolts before tightening. The manual emphasizes this requirement in bold text and warns that bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart specifications.
Remove the attachment tabs when not in use.
The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. Two cables are included and must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
No. The permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Do not use the towed vehicle for storing luggage, equipment, etc. This may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE installing the fascia.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Additionally, ensure that safety cables do not rub against any hoses.
