Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1655 is designed specifically for 2004-05 Chevrolet Malibu, including the MAXX model. The baseplate has attachment tabs measuring 13.5" in height and 23.5" in width.
The RangeFinder II, Adventurer and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used with the BX1655 due to the design of the removable tabs. Most adapters are also incompatible, except the BX8833 and BX88151.
Required tools are: Phillips screwdriver, utility knife, vise grips, 10MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 1/4" drill bit, and Loctite RED. A power drill is needed for drilling but requires careful handling due to torque and drill bit length hazards.
Yes. The headlight assemblies, front fascia, horn bracket and air baffle must be removed during installation and then reinstalled. These parts are removed to access the frame mounting points and to allow trimming of the air dam.
Yes, drilling is required. You will drill four holes on the passenger's side and three holes on the driver's side using a 13/32" drill bit, and one additional hole on the passenger's side using a 1/4" drill bit. Trimming of the air dam is also required.
The air dam must be trimmed 2.5" below the metal bumper on both sides of the vehicle to open the area for the baseplate.
The torque specification for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
1. Remove four Phillips head pushpins from the fascia cover. 2. Remove two metric bolts from each headlight assembly and unplug electrical connections. 3. Loosen (do not remove) one metric bolt behind each headlight. 4. Remove pushpins from wheel well edges. 5. Remove one metric bolt from each fascia corner. 6. Remove pushpins and four metric bolts from the bottom fascia edge, then pull fascia forward. 7. Remove horn bracket bolt and unplug electrical connections. 8. Remove air baffle pushpins and one metric bolt. 9. Remove pushpin from lower plastic on both sides and pull plastic down. 10. Trim air dam 2.5" below metal bumper on both sides. 11. Clamp baseplate in place using vise grips, aligning upper back hole with horn bracket hole on driver's side and measuring height and distance from bumper. 12. Drill four holes on passenger's side and three on driver's side with 13/32" bit. 13. Insert 3/8" bolts in lower holes with lock washers and hex nuts on both sides. 14. Insert nutplate in frame opening for driver's side upper hole. 15. Insert nutplate in frame opening for passenger's side upper hole and drill 1/4" hole. 16. Reinstall horn bracket and air baffle with existing bolts and pushpins.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5975), three 3/8" nutplates with wire (61-5208), seven 3/8-16x1.5" Grade 5 hex bolts (201-0368), seven 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), four 3/8-16 hex nuts (202-0003), two #12-14x1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32x0.5" slotted round head screws (201-0192), two 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), two right-side attachment assemblies (62-3468), two black cap plugs (290-0437), four 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046).

If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating, and the two cables together must meet the system requirements. These cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts have Loctite RED applied and are tightened to the recommended torque specifications.
Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.
The attachment tab height is 13.5" and the attachment tab width is 23.5".
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but not required. Its location on the baseplate is shown in the installation instructions.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, call Blue Ox at (888) 425-5382 before attempting installation.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Failing to follow this requirement will void the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Yes, towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
