Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

The installation also reuses two existing nuts from the vehicle.
Required tools are: 8mm socket, 11mm socket, 15mm wrench, 18mm socket, 19mm wrench, 3/4" socket, 9/16" wrench, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 17/32" drill bit, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, Loctite Blue, and a tape measure. A socket extension is also needed to access the horizontal bolt behind the bumper.

Two types of drilling are required: (1) Drill out the smaller holes above the two 1-inch diameter holes in the aluminum bumper using a 13/32" bit (Step 10). (2) Drill through each frame rail using a 17/32" bit where the outside rear supports sit on the bottom of the frame rails (Step 15). The manual notes that dimensional variations between cars may require filing a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
1. Remove belly pan and radiator cover. 2. Remove parking lights and turn lights. 3. Remove bumper mounting bolts and frame rail bolts. 4. Remove bumper with assistant help. 5. Drill holes in aluminum bumper (13/32" bit). 6. Position baseplate with assistant and install upper mount bolts (12mm x 80mm) with Loctite, do not tighten yet. 7. Install lower bolts (3/8 x 2) through bumper holes with Loctite and hex whiz nuts. 8. Snug upper bolts, reposition bumper to original location using tape measure, fully tighten upper bolts. 9. Drill frame rails (17/32" bit), install rear support bolts (1/2 x 2) with Loctite and lock washers. 10. Reinstall bumper, lights, radiator cover, and belly pan. 11. Install tow bar and safety cables.
The upper mounts attach to the frame rails of the vehicle. The 12mm x 80mm bolts are inserted through the upper mount slots and through the frame rails, then secured with the existing nuts that were removed from the bumper mounting points. The upper mounts should be positioned outside of the frame rails.
Before removing the bumper, use a tape measure to record its original position relative to the frame (Step 8). After installing the baseplate and snugging the upper bolts, use the tape measure to move the bumper back to this original position before fully tightening the bolts (Step 14). This ensures the bumper is properly aligned.
The two large holes in the bottom center of the aluminum bumper are 1 inch in diameter and are 7 inches apart. Above these large holes are smaller holes that must be drilled out with a 13/32" bit.
A 17/32" drill bit is required to drill through each frame rail where the outside rear supports of the baseplate sit on the bottom of the frame rails (Step 15).
Loctite Blue is a thread-locking compound included in the tools required. It must be applied to the bolt threads before installation at three points: (1) the 12mm x 80mm upper mount bolts (Step 11), (2) the 3/8 x 2 lower bumper bolts (Step 13), and (3) the 1/2 x 2 rear support bolts (Step 15). This prevents bolts from loosening due to vibration.
The welded nut plates (61-3799) are inserted through the large slot above the 12mm bumper bolt. The wire on the nut plate is bent so the plate sits flat over the drilled hole in the frame rail. A 1/2 x 2 bolt with a 1/2 lock washer is then started into the nut plate with Loctite applied to the threads. Each bolt is fully tightened with a 3/4" socket.
1. Remove the belly pan using an 8mm socket (four bolts in front, two in back, plus plastic push pins). 2. Remove the radiator cover (eight plastic push pins). 3. Remove parking lights (two Phillips screws each, unplug wires). 4. Remove turn lights (Phillips screw on back, 11mm nut on front, pull out bulbs). 5. Remove two Phillips screws at each end of bumper in front of tires. 6. Remove 8mm bolts on bottom of bumper. 7. Remove vertical and horizontal bolts using 8mm socket and extension. 8. Have an assistant pull lightly forward on bumper while you pry up four plastic tabs from underneath using a flat screwdriver. 9. Pull bumper straight forward and set aside.
The bumper mounts to the frame at each end via a round bar that inserts into the end of the frame rail. This bar is secured inside the frame rail with a horizontal bolt running parallel with the bumper. Remove this bolt on each side using a 15mm wrench and 18mm socket (Step 9). These nuts are then reused to secure the upper mount bolts of the baseplate.
Slide the bumper over the baseplate so that the attachment tabs and convenience links protrude through the long horizontal opening in the bottom of the bumper. Secure the bumper with three bolts and two screws on each end. Then reattach the turn lights and parking lights, check that they work, and secure the radiator cover and belly pan with push pins and bolts.
Only tow bars approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Co. or Blue Ox are compatible with the BX2122. Using any other tow bar will invalidate the limited warranty. Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost; use only approved replacement parts.
After installation, verify that the parking lights and turn lights work correctly (Step 17). Ensure the bumper is properly aligned by using the tape measure to confirm it is in its original position before fully tightening the upper bolts. Check that all bolts are fully tightened and that the baseplate is secure before using the vehicle for towing.
