Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill multiple 3/8" holes through the frame for the upper bolts and 1/2" holes for the lower bolts. The manual also requires trimming of the frame flange below the top bolt using a reciprocating saw, and trimming of shielding and fascia sections.
Two drill bit sizes are required: 3/8" drill bit for the upper frame holes and 1/2" drill bit for the lower frame holes. Both are listed in the Tools Required section.
Yes. A reciprocating saw is required to trim off the frame flange just below the top bolt back to the face of the frame on both sides of the vehicle. The manual warns to be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw.
Two trimming operations are required on the fascia: (1) trim the inside grill section out of the lower opening so it is one large opening, and (2) on the ends of the lower opening, trim about an inch down along the top side and halfway down the side, tapering it back to the bottom corner on both sides of the fascia.
The kit includes: 6 × 3/8" Whiz Nuts with 14" wire, 4 × 1/2" Nut Plates with 14" wire, 3 × 1/4"-20 × 3/4" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5, 2 × #10-32 1/2" Round Slotted Head Screws, 4 × 1/2"-13 × 2" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5, 6 × 3/8"-16 × 1-1/2" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5, 2 × 3/8"-16 × 1" Hex Head Bolts Grade 5, 2 × #12-14 × 1" Self Drilling Screws, 2 × #10-32 Hex Nuts, 2 × 3/8"-16 Hex Whiz Lock Nuts, 3 × 1/4"-20 Hex Nylon Nuts, 1 × 1/4" Flat Washer, 4 × 1/2" Flat Washers, 6 × 3/8" Lock Washers, 4 × 1/2" Lock Washers, 2 × #10 Lock Washers, 2 × Class IV Safety Cables, 2 × 1/2" Quicklinks, and 2 × Black Receiver Cap Plugs.
Yes. Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening. This is stated multiple times in the installation instructions and is listed as a required tool.
The manual provides general torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 inch bolts and Grade 8.8 and 10.9 metric bolts, but does not specify which grade or size applies to each individual bolt location on the baseplate. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided based on their size and grade. Consult the parts list to identify bolt grades, then use the torque chart on page 1 to determine the correct torque value.
The baseplate should be clamped into place and leveled before final tightening. The middle hole is drilled and bolted first on both sides, then the remaining top holes are drilled and bolted, then the lower holes are drilled and bolted. All hardware should be fully tightened after leveling the baseplate. Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads.
The baseplate is installed onto the frame, flushed to the top of the frame, and then clamped into place. The baseplate is leveled before all hardware is fully tightened.
The washer reservoir bracket (part 102-7613) is used to reattach the windshield washer fluid reservoir to the vehicle after baseplate installation. On the passenger side, the flat washer and reservoir bracket are installed onto the front bolt before the bolt is installed through the frame.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are attached to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Installation must be done on both sides of the vehicle. Refer to the Permanent Baseplate Safety Cable Installation section for recommended cable routing arrangements.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
All electrical connections must be plugged in and accessories must be functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This is critical to ensure proper operation of lights and other electrical components.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Paint cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. The permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. The manual states that a hole should be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. The permanent baseplate safety cables function to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must not mount against wires, hoses or brake lines. The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and ensure the baseplate is not installed against these components, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.

Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is important to protect the frame from corrosion after drilling and trimming operations.
The manual states that many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate. However, even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions.
Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.

You will need a drill, reciprocating saw, torque wrench, sockets (10MM, 12MM, 13MM, 14MM, 9/16", 3/4"), Torx bits (T25, T30), drill bits (3/8", 1/2"), vise grip, screwdrivers, utility knife, and Loctite Red.
Yes. You must drill multiple 3/8" holes for upper bolts and 1/2" holes for lower bolts through the frame. You will also need to trim the frame flange with a reciprocating saw and trim fascia sections.
The fascia, windshield washer fluid reservoir, crossbar, and driver-side plastic shield must be removed. The fascia and reservoir are reinstalled after baseplate installation; the crossbar and shield are not.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
The baseplate must be replaced. Do not reuse it after an accident or if it is damaged or missing parts, as this could result in serious injury or loss of the towed vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect the baseplate for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Tighten all bolts to specification using Loctite Red. Paint any cut frame edges to prevent rust.
Verify that all electrical connections are plugged in properly before reinstalling the fascia. Ensure all accessories are functioning properly. If they are not, check that all connections made during fascia removal were properly reconnected.
Inspect all towing equipment for loose bolts before each towing trip. If bolts are found to be loose, tighten them to the appropriate torque specification using Loctite Red on all bolt threads. Refer to the bolt torque specification chart based on bolt size and grade.
Cut frame edges should have been painted with good quality paint immediately after drilling to prevent rusting. If rust is observed, clean the affected area and apply paint to prevent further corrosion.
