Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2134 is designed specifically for the 1996 Ford Crown Victoria. However, your vehicle weighs over 3500 lbs and requires a Class III (5000 lbs) rated tow bar, hitch, and accessories. Use of the Blue Ox baseplate with any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Co. will invalidate the limited warranty.
The BX2134 is a Class III (5000 lbs) rated baseplate. This rating applies to the baseplate, tow bar, and hitch as a system. Your 1996 Ford Crown Victoria weighs over 3500 lbs, making it suitable for Class III equipment.
Required tools are: 8mm socket, 11mm socket, 15mm wrench, 18mm socket, 19mm wrench, 3/4" socket, 9/16" wrench, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 17/32" drill bit, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, Loctite Blue, and tape measure.
The kit includes: 1 baseplate weldment (61-5133), 2 nut plate weldments (61-3799), 2 × 1/2-13 x 2 hex bolts Grade 5, 2 × 12mm-1.75 x 80mm hex bolts Grade 8.8, 2 × 3/8-16 x 1 1/4 hex bolts Grade 5, 2 × 1/2 lock washers, 2 × 3/8-16 hex Whiz nuts, 2 × 12mm lock washers, 2 × 12mm flat washers, 10 × 3/8 flat washers, 2 × 3/8 lock washers, 2 existing nuts (reused from vehicle), 2 × 36" Class III safety cables, and 2 × 3/8 quick links.
You must remove: (1) the front bumper molding for frame access, (2) the signal light moldings on both sides (remove Phillips screws on the outside and two brass nuts on the inside front of the engine compartment, then detach electrical connectors), and (3) the horn from the bumper bracket so it can be repositioned to the top side of the bracket.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. However, you will be removing signal light moldings and detaching electrical connectors from the light moldings. Consult the vehicle service manual or a qualified technician regarding battery disconnection before working with electrical components.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill four holes in the vehicle's frame: two for the front plate using a 13/32" drill bit, and two for the back bent braces using a 17/32" drill bit. Use the baseplate holes as guides for drilling. The manual also requires notching the plastic radiator cover and trimming the bumper molding.
The plastic in front of the radiator must be notched to fit around the baseplate's main tube. First, remove the plastic tree rivets that hold the front of the plastic on both sides of the radiator. These rivets must be removed so the plastic can be notched to fit over the square tube of the baseplate. After drilling frame holes, replace the plastic with the notches in place.
The plastic bumper molding must be trimmed so that the attachment tabs of the baseplate will fit through the upper grill of the bumper molding. The exact amount of trimming depends on your vehicle's specific bumper profile; use the baseplate position as a guide.
Locate the bolt on the side of the frame approximately 8 inches back from the aluminum bumper. There is a similar bolt on the passenger side. The five-inch brace on the baseplate uses these two holes. Remove the existing bolts, position the baseplate, and secure it using 12mm bolts (Item 5) along with flat washers, lock washers, and existing nuts. Push the baseplate up tight so the bent braces fit against the frame and the front plate holes are positioned on the aluminum frame.
1. Remove front bumper molding and signal light moldings. 2. Remove horn and reposition to top of bracket. 3. Locate and remove side frame bolts (8 inches back from aluminum bumper). 4. Position baseplate and secure with 12mm side bolts. 5. Drill four frame holes (13/32" for front, 17/32" for back). 6. Install front and back bolts with appropriate washers and nuts, using Loctite Blue. 7. Notch and replace radiator plastic. 8. Trim and replace bumper molding. 9. Install tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.
Use Loctite Blue on each bolt to ensure they do not loosen during use. This applies to all bolts used in the installation: the 12mm side bolts, the 1/2" back bolts, and the 3/8" front bolts.
For the two front plate holes, use 3/8" bolts (Item 5: 3/8-16 x 1 1/4 hex bolts Grade 5), lock washers (Item 10: 3/8 lock washers), nuts (Item 7: 3/8-16 hex Whiz nuts), and flat washers as spacers (Item 11: 12mm flat washers). Apply Loctite Blue to each bolt.
For the two back bent brace holes, use 1/2" bolts (Item 3: 1/2-13 x 2 hex bolts Grade 5), lock washers (Item 6: 1/2 lock washers), and wire nuts (Item E: existing nuts). Apply Loctite Blue to each bolt.
The 12mm flat washers (Item 11) are used as spacers for the two front plate holes. They are installed with the 3/8" front bolts, lock washers, and nuts.
Two 36" Class III safety cables (part number 226-0046) and two 3/8" quick links (part number 229-0359) are included. These are used to secure the tow bar to the baseplate as a secondary safety measure.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement pins and clips from the tow bar manufacturer or your Blue Ox dealer.

Yes. You must drill four holes in the frame: two using a 13/32" bit for the front plate and two using a 17/32" bit for the back braces. You also need to notch the radiator plastic and trim the bumper molding.
