Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2651 is a Class IV towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox, designed specifically for the 2006 Ford E-350 Commercial. It is a permanent installation that attaches to the vehicle's frame to provide a connection point for a tow bar. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty.
The BX2651 is designed specifically for the 2006 Ford E-350 (Commercial). The manual does not confirm compatibility with other model years. If your vehicle looks different from the manual's illustration, contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before purchasing.
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 17/32" drill bit, 13MM socket, 15MM socket, 18MM socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, and Loctite Red. You will also need protective covers or rags to prevent damage to cosmetic parts during installation.
The kit includes: 1 DS baseplate (61-7320), 1 PS baseplate (61-7321), 1 electrical bracket (101-6135), 6 bolts of 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" Grade 5 (201-0068), 2 screws of #10-32 x 1/2" (201-0192), 5 bolts of 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 (201-0050), 4 hex nuts of 1/2"-13 (202-0005), 2 hex nuts of #10-32 (202-0047), 5 nylon lock nuts of 1/4"-20 (202-0102), 6 lock washers of 1/2" (203-0012), 2 lock washers of #10 (203-0054), 2 Class IV safety cables (226-0049), and 2 quicklinks of 1/2" (229-0512). Four existing bumper bolts are reused.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle, but the manual does not state whether it is required. Contact your Blue Ox Dealer or Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 to confirm whether it is necessary for your specific installation.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051. The manual does not state that professional installation is mandatory, but it is strongly recommended.
Yes. The bumper is removed at the start of installation and then reinstalled. During installation, the driver side bumper face bolts remain out while the baseplate is being fitted. The bumper is fully reinstalled once the baseplate is secured.
Yes. Some drilling is required. Specifically, you must drill two inner holes through the frame using a 17/32" drill bit. After drilling, 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolts with 1/2" lock washers are installed into these holes, with 1/2"-13 hex nuts on the inside of the frame. This drilling is performed on both the driver and passenger sides.
Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. This protects the exposed metal from corrosion.
Torque specifications depend on bolt size and grade. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs. The BX2651 kit uses Grade 5 bolts. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening, and tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided.
The attachment tab height is 24-1/2" and the attachment tab width is 32".
1. Remove two 13MM bolts from wheel well (one per side) and four 18MM bolts from bumper face (two per side); set bumper aside. 2. Remove six 15MM bolts from tow hooks (three per side); do not reinstall tow hooks. 3. Reinstall bumper using only wheel well bolts and passenger side face bolts; leave driver side bolts out. 4. Insert DS baseplate, start a 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolt with lock washer into bottom rear tow hook hole and finger tighten; reinstall two existing bumper bolts and fully tighten all three. 5. Drill two inner holes through frame with 17/32" bit; install 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" bolts with lock washers and hex nuts; fully tighten. 6. Repeat steps 4-5 on passenger side. 7. Attach permanent baseplate safety cables to both sides of vehicle frame.
Four existing bumper bolts are reused: two from the wheel well (removed with 13MM socket) and two from the passenger side bumper face (removed with 18MM socket). The driver side bumper face bolts remain out during baseplate installation and are not reinstalled.
No. The six bolts from the tow hooks (three per side, removed with 15MM socket) are removed, and the tow hooks will not be reinstalled. The baseplate uses the tow hook mounting holes for its own attachment.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and serve to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
The safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This ensures that any wiring work done during installation is complete and operational.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. These tools can cause injury if not used carefully. Ensure you understand what is behind and around the drilling area before beginning.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. Handling of cosmetic parts may require the use of protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. If you find any issues, address them before towing.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use, if applicable. This helps protect the tabs and keeps them in good condition for when you need to tow.
Register your product online at www.blueox.com so you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate; do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5).
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service.
