Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2199 is designed specifically for 2008-11 Ford Focus SES with manual transmission. The manual does not confirm compatibility with automatic transmission versions. Confirm fitment with your Blue Ox Dealer before purchase, especially if your vehicle differs from the standard configuration. Contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 if the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual.
The removable attachment tabs (one hole) are designed for use only with motorhome mount tow bars or the BX8833 or BX88151 adapters. They will not attach to car mount tow bars or other adapters. The tabs have 20" width and 13" height. Specific tow bar compatibility depends on tab spacing: the Acclaim requires 23" or greater spacing, the Adventurer requires 16–36" spacing, and the Ambassador requires 24" spacing.
Required tools include: 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm sockets, 7/16" socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 30 Torx socket, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, vise grips, utility knife, and Loctite RED. A power drill is needed for drilling the four corner holes into the frame webbing.
The kit includes: 8× 3/8-16 × 1¼" hex head bolts (Grade 5), 8× 3/8" lock washers, 8× 3/8-16 hex nuts, 1× 6mm-1.0 × 30mm hex bolt (Grade 8.8), 1× 6mm lock washer, 1× 1/4" flat washer, 2× #12-14 × 1" self-drilling screws, 2× 10-32 × ½" slot round head screws, 2× #10 lock washers, 2× #10-32 hex nuts, 2× 4-way connector adapters, 2× attachment tab assemblies, 2× 36" Class III baseplate safety cables, 2× 3/8" quicklinks, and 2× receiver cap plugs.
The following must be removed: radiator cover (4 Phillips push pins), grille assembly, headlight assemblies (3 screws per side using 10mm socket), fascia (multiple push pins and screws), air dam (4 push pins), windshield washer tank (3 metric bolts using 10mm socket), and a black plastic piece (3 push pins). All removed components and fasteners should be set aside for reinstallation. Fog lights must be unplugged when removing the fascia.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
Yes, drilling is required. Four corner holes must be drilled into the frame webbing using a 13/32" drill bit. The baseplate is used as a template to mark the hole locations. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Yes, trimming is required in two places. On the inside of the fascia, trim the fog light housing bumps flush with the plastic surface (bottom trim back 2", top trim 1½"). Additionally, trim the top edge of the air dam by 2¾" to allow clearance for the baseplate. If air dams are reinstalled, this trimming is mandatory. A utility knife is used for the fascia trim.
Yes. The manual states that air dams may be left off the vehicle or held just below the original location and trimmed to allow the baseplate to fit. Reinstallation of air dams is optional. If reinstalled, trimming of 2¾" from the top edge is required.
The manual provides a general torque chart for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts by size, showing 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. However, the manual also directs users to tighten all bolts according to the torque chart on the front page or page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions. For the specific torque value for this installation, refer to the General Instructions or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
The manual specifies using a 6mm-1.0 × 30mm hex bolt (Grade 8.8) for the windshield washer tank on the passenger side. According to the torque chart, a 6mm Grade 8.8 bolt should be torqued to 8 foot-pounds. Loctite RED must be applied to the bolt before tightening.
Yes. The manual explicitly states: "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING." This applies to all bolts, including the four corner frame bolts and the windshield washer tank bolt. Loctite RED is listed in the tools required.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. The manual does not specify whether it is required or optional. Contact your Blue Ox Dealer for confirmation of whether this kit is necessary for your specific towing setup.
The kit includes 2× 4-way round electrical connector adapters (part 101-5822). The manual also shows a 6-way round electrical connector in the parts list illustration, though the specific part number and quantity for this connector are not detailed in the parts table.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2199 kit includes 2× 36" Class III baseplate safety cables and 2× 3/8" quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is on the vehicle and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation attaches the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before installing the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. After installation, verify that the convenience links, electrical rods, and attachment tabs come through the fascia opening correctly. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable). Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
The attachment tab height is 13" and the width is 20".
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Yes. Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Additionally, towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
